Aberllyn. 009 gauge on a 4' x 2' board.

Recommended Posts

I have given up on my folding picnic table layout for now as i just could'nt get all the buildings and features i really wanted into the small space, anyway i've built a slightly bigger 6mm thick plywood base with an inch square batten frame measuring four feet long by two feet wide, and it will be attached to the folding legs of a new but very cheap ironing board which i bought just to get the metal grille i needed for my camper van resto'...cos' its cheaper & stronger grille stuff than Halfords etc. sell.  :mosking:

The layout will be total fantasy and straight out-a my head, with a nice mixture of industrial grime and some Greenery.

Waiting for a Skaledale tin house to arrive in the post today, which will hopefully match the Bachman curly tin engine shed. :)

The progress so far.

With failing health and numb fingers the smaller modelling is getting harder to do myself in this scale, so i have to bite the bullet and i'll have to buy RTR stuff for this layout. The buildings with their detailing and being already weathered are superb and instantly look the part. The Bachman and the Skaledale buildings are ideal for what i have in mind. Waiting for some more track and one set of points to arrive this week, but i nailed a lot down yesterday, i also cut out what will be a sunken area to tip 'stuff' off the railway wagons down into some lorries below, just what materials this will be i have'nt yet decided....may even be a Jam butty mine.  :jester:

I made a start on the landscaping the other night but only after the rest of the track had been nailed down and the tin building had arrived. It's inch thick off cuts of  foam insulation board with the tin foil removed, stuck together with glue i was given that is normally used to stick wooden flooring together. A piece of recently acquired hardboard made a nice curved backdrop to which i will later add a Gaugemaster backdrop on to.The current mess behind the back board will be another landscaped part of the layout ....if only to hide all the rough wood-working. Two L&B style tunnel/bridge mouths are on order and another stone built engine shed is due to arrive within days. Until then i will give the rocks a rough coating with some flexible crack filler to add some texture.

I used three tubes of flexible filler to cover all the rock faces using an inch wide paint brush, it was roughly smeared on at a few milli' thick, the bridges/tunnels arrived and were stuck in position. The roadway and the work yard area are made from cardboard cornflake box bits which are soaked in diluted PVA. Some Granite ballast was scattered around the base of the rock faces and glued down with PVA hopefully to act as scree. Thanks for Looking. :)

Nice work! I like watching this layout come together. The ballast scree is an excellent idea and looks very effective to me. I also think that from low angles the cliffs make for a good backdrop on their own, without anything behind them. But what happened to the rail-to-road drops? Did you... "drop" them?  :jester:

Many thanks! They are still there, it's just very hard to see them at the mo' with the cardboard merging into the track side and the bad pics' I hope to put a stone wall there so you should be able to see the differences in height later this week, i have ordered some Hornby Skaledale Cotswold stone walling which i'll have to alter to fit. :) I have'nt carved any sort of pattern into the stonework at all, i just picked the faces that looked the best and most realistic looking, and laid them in a layered natural fashion of a sort, and once i'd hand broken up the foam pieces, some smaller bits that broke off made good scale wheelbarrow sized rocks which i've stuck around to represent fallen ones at the foot of the sheer drops.  The centre tunnel i will leave as it is with maybe a bit of propping up with wooden poles (kebab sticks) & corrugated (plastic) sheet.  :nowinkclear:

You could end up building a model of your model railway!

Looks like you will achieve mastery of model terrain just as you have of real terrain. A very attractive an interesting plan, I'd be interested to know how you will operate it.

Bob great work on the landscaping the tunnels bring it all together and I like how you have made the yard and road surface. This is turning out to be an interesting build..

Thanks Edwardian, i was a landscape gardener and designed and worked on more than a few big projects, so i'm a bit of a cheat really in the rockery knowledge dept. T'will operate with no rules or regulations, i'll just run whatever and whenever i like in either direction, it's made to use and have fun with. I should be able to operate two working trains at once by DC with plenty of live feeds, insulating stretches and sidings to use as storage. Hopefully all the points will be manually operated by bike spokes, be like pulling & pushing organ stoppers which i'll feed through the batten edging from all four sides. I needed an indoor NG based layout and what with all this new 009 stuff coming out i can't wait :jester: Looking forward and using this as an excuse to buy a few of those new quarry Hunslets  :mosking: Having visited a few model shows i can't say i like the DCC and the sound options much, but i'm set in my old ways, i think all the engine noises would drive me crackers after just five minutes. Three tester pots of Dulux Emulsion was bought yesterday in various shades of Grey, one called Slate Grey seems to work the best but the two others are just too Blue looking. I'll get a few more today to test, some scatter stuff was sprinkled in certain areas whilst the paint was still wet. Hope you can see the drops better now 'TecnicArrow. :)

I've been given my orders by the 'Females' of the house and so for my own good i decided to landscape the back of the hills i'd already done in a similar fashion, so the back drop idea has now bitten the dust. More insulation foam was cut up and stuck on in layers. At the right hand corner i decided to make some old un-covered mine workings and i'll make a water feature below it, the first efforts i made which were painted with a Bluey Grey were covered in a thin wash of Purple acrylic paint which now gives it a Plumb slate look and i dry brushed some off White emulsion over it all to highlight the grain of the slate layers etc. Half the track was given a rusty coat, still a lot to do, but the nights are drawing in and the weather is slowly on the turn for the worse.......so plenty time ahead for more dynamic inactivity!  :crazy_mini:

Brilliant work, but having seen at first hand the wonderful 16mm railway McMullen Coal Company createdby Old Bob I can't say I'm surprised. Like SB67 It has even made me start to think about a small 009 layout myself. I must try to resist taking on more projects at the moment though!

Coming on great. Got anything running yet?

Ian

Nowt built to run on it yet Ian, i have one unfinished dieseasel kit, i wonder how hard is it to fit remote control to loco's this small. :jester: At least i can buy some RTR Ashover  marked wagons as its the got same initials....ALR. purely by accident of course :mosking: Going to have to find more scraps of insulation this morning to make more scree and small rocks as swmbo has chucked the full bin bag i had down the tip!  :nono:  :threaten:  :sarcastichand:

A few more evenings more fettling and i've broken up some real slate pieces (that came off my driveway) with a big hammer and made them even smaller and i also kept & used the dust from it,  i've stuck a fair amount around, but not too much as i think less is more on this layout, and it'll keep the weight down! I painted up the rock faces along the back and stuck a tall piece of foam insulation on one corner as a feature. An old Hornby track layers hut and some laddering were found in the model shop scrap box and bought for pennies and they will be painted and detailed up this week ready to add for the next lot of pics' It probably do'snt look a lot different than the last lot of pics' but every little helps to make a slight difference! Can anyone please advise or recommend on what or which is the best way or product to use as water? :dontknow:

A bit more progress has been made in the last few evenings although it looks not to be much different, it is all building up nicely. I need to buy some tuffs of grass this week and stick it all around the place, i have four Peco point levers to fit but i do need four more. The loco' is'nt finished yet but by sticking a 9v. battery across the rails i've had it moving and posing around the line quite a bit for the first time. A few pairs of Roco wagons were bought the other week, they are quite cheap to buy as well, but there's plenty of Winter work on weathering them yet to do!

Crikey Bob that moved fast from when I last saw the thread!

Have you got pre orders in for a brace of Quarry Hunslets from Bachmann? They'd look right at home on there.

Using rtr buildings for stuff that was modular or followed standard designs makes perfect sense, they should look like all the others :)

Look forward to seeing the detailing continue :)

I used the scenecraft stuff on my 009 modules for the same reason, although I'm following a L&B theme.
