Dartmoor Prison Model Locomotives

Hi there chaps

 

I was recent reminiscing about some old magazines I had which have sadly been lost to years, house moves and general overuse to the point of destruction. One such was was Model Railway Enthusiast June 1996. In it was an article written about one of the Prison Wardens in Dartmoor who built some wonderful caricatures of Steam Locomotives which he sold off for charities.

 

I am curious to see if there is any further information about the loco's he built and what has happened to them in recent year and if he is still building them.

 

The chaps name was John Massey, I believe.

I would have expeted a chain gang in the early days, rather than a loco, late on conditions became positively soft - sawdust matresses rather than stone floors, hot food, roofs etc.

There was a connection with Llangollen Railway somehow. A model of 7754 is still at Berwyn on display. There was also a model of 80072 in the groups sales coach, but it has been passed on now.

There is a model in the prison museum. Purports to be a G6, I think. About Gauge 1 size.
