Here’s a few snaps of a diorama/photo display I’ve just finished. I made the ‘hardware’ and Neil Podbery took care of the vegetation, with Paul Bambrick painting a backscene. I’ll take some overall shots of it when I can get it outside. And it will shortly be up for sale.

Not yet…!

Actually I’m dithering a bit over selling it. It may be quite nice to keep hold of something I’ve made!

Here are some better shots taken outside of the dioram. I have made the baseboard from MDF with a solid hardwood edging, hand polished. Overall it measures 1040mm x 360mm x 360mm high. The scenic elements were skilfully taken care of by Neil Podbery and the beautiful sky-line backscene by Paul Bambrick. It features a ground frame, bracket signal and the begininnings of the turnout that it protects. It would be ideal to display rolling stock and locomotives to best advantage. It really is a first-class diorama - the photos don’t really do it justice and I am very pleased how the collaboration between Neil, Paul and me has worked out. It will be the first of many…!
It is for sale for £1550. Please contact me if you are interested.

Going round the bend with this little lot! A commission layout based around curves - not one single straight turnout! This is one of four boards, although this one and another one are the most complicated. It takes careful setting out to make sure everything lines up, especially from board to board. I’ve used C&L components and my own laser cut ply scale 14” wide crossing timbers. The paper in various places are my Autocad templates stuck down in key locations.

Sorry everyone, not been on here for a while  - anyway, I thought I’d post a few pics of a GW water tower I recently completed. It’s based on the excellent Intentio kit with added detailing such as tank rivets, ladder, platform and lamp. Also taking advantage of some rare sunshine!

Once again I find myself apologising fit not having been on here for a while. Anyway, here’s some photos of a low relief model I have made recently of the Goods Station that used to exist in the Paddington environs. A few pics of the lettering in progress and the finished article. Apologies to FB and Instagram users who will have seen before…

Excellent work Rich! I wish I could manage to do lettering as neatly as that!  I also wish I had the discipline to put my tools back neatly on the wall as in the second to last picture, rather than in a not so neat pile on my work bench!

Nice Wisteria by the way🙂

Thanks Dave! Keeping my bench(es) tidy is a constant challenge - but with space at a premium I have to! Besides which I find I have to clean up before switching from one customer’s project to another so that my head has a chance to switch before I ask my hands to do anything - if that makes sense.

And in an effort to keep this thread up to date, here is a cinema and row of shops I’m working on with Paul Bambrick. They are still there in reality but the Royalty Cinema isn’t a cinema any longer. They’re about 5 and a bit mm/ft as they’re in the background on the layout and therefore less than 7mm/ft ‘full size’. That’s Mr Bambrick’s skill in knowing how to juggle scale (and perspective) to suit the location and viewing angle. Complete with ‘The King and I’ posters  correct for the period being modelled! CA2C439C-F924-4C7A-B199-244934DA1218.jpeg.6536e4eeaff7a6d0ecd7f40299549acc.jpeg

Thought you’d like to see some pics of the completed Art Deco cinema and shops building. Paul Bambrick kindly ‘offered’ to complete the shop interiors! 55AA79B6-2B87-48B3-A1C9-A29D7CA04273.jpeg.d3fd0ac22e01340f0d8f3ef8c0074a50.jpegA2917AEF-DC98-493C-9F95-5EC154D7E833.jpeg.84f219c8d9595c73e6e955ad85db471f.jpeg30C8939C-5111-4863-AA99-E0AF4F5A5A59.jpeg.990b17c3ea2ad7d36c191b043041a5ee.jpeg23F2DA59-A90B-4E68-A615-BF657A0C8B54.jpeg.4b16097bd460b3db4120fa469fad888c.jpeg

On the bench today some 7mm warehouse windows - made from two layers of card to give the frame some depth, with thin clear acrylic glazing. Even included three minuscule vent holes at the top! Contact me if you would like the same, similar or something different for your building. Any scale, colour, size or quantity. I also do doors..!!

Deja vu on warehouse windows! The subtle difference with these is whilst being the identical design to those I made yesterday, these have opened fanlights. When combined in the customer’s warehouse model with the closed ones, the difference will be subtle but effective. Contact me to discuss your project - any scale.

Continuing the theme of windows - here’s some more! Plus some doors just for balance! These are destined for some very handsome Midland coal office and weighbridge buildings - a heady mix of Crimson Lake and Denby Pottery Cream! Contact me to discuss your project.

Following on from Friday’s post this is where the doors and windows ended up. A pair of very attractive Midland Railway buildings - coal offices and weighbridge office. Both scratch built to 7mm/ft to order. Contact me with your project brief.

I recall a while ago posting somewhere a picture of this diorama in progress but before my good friend Neil Podbery had a go at it with his green fingers! Needless to say the customer was thrilled and shows off his locos and stock a treat! I love making these - such a simple and yet elegant solution to the problem of not enough space for a layout and still wanting to see your locos in a realistic setting. This one from memory measures about 15” x 3’6” in old money.

I am asked to build all sorts of railway-related architecture, including this delightful GWR signal box. As the nameplate says, this example is destined for a model of Culham station. I posted on social media recently some photos of the interior details, courtesy of Severn Models, including lever frame, block shelf and instruments, stove, armchair etc. Here they are then completed and in their natural habitat. I have no association with Severn Models, other than being a happy customer. The roof is retained by four little brass pegs in each corner and lifts off to gain access to the interior, the floor of which also lifts out. This means that the customer can access the interior to position and re-position a signalman!
The building itself is entirely scratch built, including brass etched windows from my own artwork.
Contact me to discuss your own architectural project.
