'Caledonian Pug' workplates and Wheels

Recommended Posts

Help if at all possible ....

I am trying to accurately model a pair of Caledonian 'Pugs', 56028 & 56039  in their later lives under BR.

Does anyone have information on the wheel size and spokes etc ?   I think they were 3ft 8" wheels ?

Also  what  wheels were used for the small wooden tenders ?

Finally is it possible to obtain these wheels in 4mm (OO) scale and from which supplier ?

I believe these locos carried works plates on both sides - is this correct ?

Can anybody help me with the detail of the woks plates, eg, shape, dimensions and lettering etc on the plates ?

   Thanks in advance,

      Ian

Worksplates are available from Narrow Plant. You'll have to work out which number and date is relevant.

They are this style https://shop.narrowplanet.co.uk/collections/works-plate-styles/products/npp-276

Wheels are available from Alan Gibson.

4844E 3' 8" 14.6mm 8 spoke ‘T’ Caly Pug Plain PB 12" 4.00mm  For the early ones. I assume these were replaced pretty early on by the ones below.

4844P 3' 8" 14.6mm 12 spoke Caly Pug Plain IL 10" 3.33mm  For later ones.

I haven't got the foggiest about the tenders, but wouldn't mind one myself. Have you tried the Caledonian Forum? Lots of information on there and you don't need to be a member to read the pages.

But the correct wheels should be available from Alan Gibson.

Hi Staffordshire,

For information about wheel types, springs, etc, it's all in the book '40 years of Caledonian Locomotives'.  From memory the two you speak of should have the plain spokes, and springs visible above the footplate.

The 'Caledonian Railway Association' used to do a fret of generic Caley loco plates; don't know if they are still available.  I found the nubbers on the real plates to be so small that I couldn't read them at normal viewing distance when scaled down to 1:76!

Hope this is of help.

Regards,

Alex.

Really have a read at the CRA forums.

There is a good thread on a cracking scratchbuild by Alan K and a lot of other threads about the way they were developed and modified of the years. The "tenders" were recycled mineral wagons and were equally various.

Long ago there was an Anchorage kit  and that was the basis of my first one. Falcon designs then produced a kit, could have been from the Anchorage etch. I used one to make a Killin branch version. So I have used both types of Gibson wheels which are pretty accurate.

The Falcon brass kit is currently listed as out of stock, they are discussed elsewhere on these forums
