Ratio SR bogie van

I replaced my kit's original plastic wheels with metal ones, also to the Mansell pattern.

The kit I built thirty-odd years ago, and have recently replaced with a Hornby model, came with metal Mansell wheels (Romford?).

The body was starting to turn back into a kit and the flanges were well worn (leading to many derailments) by the end, so I think I had my money's worth.

Seems an odd step backwards if newer ones come with plastic wheels.

Since they rode on absolutely standard SR steam stock bogies, it's likely they always had plain steel wheels: the example about 200 yards from where I'm typing this (it belongs to the Tonbridge Model Engineers) certainly does. I suspect Ratio got this wrong, by simply using mouldings/stock wheelsets suitable for their Midland/LNWR coaches.

If they have Mansell wheels then I've a feeling they are wrong. They weren't built until 1937 when Mansell wheels were apparently banned.

Although there is always an exception. Number 256 seems to have them in this photograph.

My three had metal plain disc wheels supplied. One bought when it first came out and the other two more recently.

I would also recommend using these as they improve the model no end.
