Afraid not ... but I did see the Weaver Hill layout at the GCR show earlier this year - very impressive and action packed layout. I remember seeing 87002 in the current Caledonian livery.

That ok, it means there are more WCML modellers out there able to run virgin/ BR sector.

All looking very good indeed. Particularly the OHLE.

Your Mk3 is excellent - the executive light grey looks a perfect shade, what paint did you use, please?  And was that airbrushed?  The silver window frames make a huge improvement.

Many thanks. I used the Railmatch version of Executive Light Grey (200). I brush painted using a decent quality brush, only used one coat and pretty pleased with how it’s turned out. I used Darkstar molten metal tarnished steel for the frames with two coats applied using a very fine brush and steady hand.post-10765-0-11078800-1540658945_thumb.jpeg

Very impressed that it's brush painted.  Did you thin the paint?  And did you use a primer?

Sorry for all the questions but I have quite a few Intercity items that I'd like to standardise the shade of ELG!  For example, recently purchased Hornby Valenta HST power cars is much too cream compared to my Lima Mk3's.  I tried Precision ELG but that has a slight green tinge.  I'd like to do all my Lima, Hornby and Dapol Mk2 to get them all matched up.  Thanks.

That’s ok, more than happy to help as I’ve received so much inspiration and so many tips on RMWeb so far. Very true about the differences in shades between various manufacturers ... I’ve recently reformed a few rakes so they are formed of vehicles from the same manufacturer where possible.

I didn’t use any primer on the coaches but did make sure the body sides were clean, also used decent quality masking tape and thankfully had no paint bleed. I used the enamel paint neat - but only applied a small amount at a time and made sure I used many brush strokes for a thin coat. I just need to finish it off with transfers but so far I’m happy with the results. I’ve repainted two other Oxford Rail MK3’s and I might install LED lights inside them this weekend.

I look forward to seeing your further updates - inspiration indeed!

I’ve also commenced a project to keep me busy over winter to install some lighting inside my carriages. I’ve bought an Oxford Rail Mk3, repainted the lower body side and classification strip executive light grey, painted the window frames, installed some passengers and LED lighting with a capacitor unit that keeps the carriage lit for a few minutes.

I hope everyone has had an enjoyable festive period so far. Santa was kind to me and delivered a Cobbler rake for me in the form of 10 x Bachmann Mark 1 NSE liveried coaches.

I’ve used the close couplers as supplies within the box and given the rake a test run. They look good but I’ve had a few derailments so far; I’ll check the back-to-backs and may replace the couplers.

Following a bit of research on RMWeb about the Bachmann Mark 1’s being susceptible to derailments, I’ve checked the back to backs of each wheel set, re-reamed each axle box, checked/loosened the screw retaining each bogie, changed the couplings to Hornby’s R8220 and the NSE rake is performing much better.

In the meantime, I’ve seen that the recent release of the batch of Heljan Class 33’s included 33056 The Burma Star. I saw one on EBay on the day of a 15% discount offer and I couldn’t resist! The real machine often used to idle outside my garden near Selhurst Depot as a youngster and the model looks mighty fine.

Here she is during running-in ...

I didn’t realise the Cobblers were that long

I’ve seen a few clips of the Cobblers on YouTube, the following link at 8:25 has a rake of 13 Mark 1’s being brought into Euston by a Class 85. An IC Exec Class 86 departs north with it at 15:00. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Gk62oogz4Ms&t=1362s

That is a really excellent YouTube video.

Great inspiration for weathering!

Thanks for posting the link for it.

Hi all, a few different little projects progressed in recent weeks ....

I purchased another Intercity Swallow Hornby Class 87 and have repainted to backdate it to be 87030 Black Douglas in her 1993 condition:

I still wasn’t happy with the running properties of the Bachmann Mark 1 NSE stock. Further investigation showed they were not very free running, even on a downhill gradient. I used a track tuner but they were still stiff, but further browsing led me to the Knowle Wagon Works thread and brass bearing tool. I’ve used to insert Romford plain brass bearing and they’ve made a huge difference, resulting in much improved running, so I can thoroughly recommend this tool.

Another project ... during the winter evenings I’ve bought and put together a few Scalemodelscenery kits, including steel coils for the rake of Bachmann BAA wagons. I’m looking forward to adding a few of the recently announced Cavalex BBA’s to the rake.

I’ve also installed more cable troughs and relay boxes around the layout, also completed fitting interior lighting to two rakes of stock - still many more projects to progress!

This year seems to be going so fast, can’t believe it’s June already! A few more purchases to report; two of the excellent new Bachmann Class 90s and I couldn’t resist the Bachmann NSE Class 47. Here they are during running in ...

Despite another busy few months with work, I’ve made a bit more progress with a few projects. I’ve installed some more cable trunking and cabinets and commenced some weathering to blend in:

Another project has been to install a CCTV camera and monitor towards the buffers of the terminal to assist me locate the uncoupling ramps from the control panel by using a rear-review reversing camera kit purchased from Amazon. I’ve used a couple of small labels just to clarify the location of the uncoupling ramps for the far two tracks!  The Bachmann loco staff figures clarify on the platforms show the location for the near tracks. A simple on-off switch for the camera has been installed to the left of the monitor.

Current project is installing a roadworks cameo including wiring Layout4U’s flashing cones and traffic lights:

As others have said - this is looking superb! I'm currently much closer to how things looked for you back in 2007 - so am sure will be taking real inspiration from what you have achieved here! Really great stuff! I am also minded to copy your drop down corner boards -- genius!

Many thanks and good luck with your project! I’ve found the corner boards really help, as they’ve allowed me to create sweeping curves with a larger radius, easier access to carry out work and creates different viewing angles - the kids enjoy these especially. Just make sure to make them large enough and to use a decent glue if attaching any scenic items (I’ve decapitated a couple of the cricketers by accident over time!)

Love the layout!

Who's overhead gantry portals have you used?

Thanks again! The portals are brass kits by NBrass Loco’s https://www.nbrasslocos.co.uk/oocat.html.

The kits are straightforward to solder together (especially if pre-bent using the bending formers) and can be easily modified to suit your layout. I’ve then attached simple registration arms using brass wire and wound some wire around to represent the insulators. Hope this helps.

This layout is impressive, I have stumbled across it whilst looking for examples of n-brass catenary, my layout is coming on, Johnson Street IEMD, which is a WCML up to the minute DB operated Crewe inspired mostly electric and some diesel (well, one has to have some) maintenance depot on an end to end format. It is being built by a local model shop for me, but i have been looking for a solution for the catenary and have explored numerous options including scratchbuilt, expert catenary builds as wellas PECO and Dapol.

Alas, the layout is nowhere near as far on as yours though... so thumbs up here from one modeller to another. Kat :-)
