This layout is impressive, I have stumbled across it whilst looking for examples of n-brass catenary, my layout is coming on, Johnson Street IEMD, which is a WCML up to the minute DB operated Crewe inspired mostly electric and some diesel (well, one has to have some) maintenance depot on an end to end format. It is being built by a local model shop for me, but i have been looking for a solution for the catenary and have explored numerous options including scratchbuilt, expert catenary builds as wellas PECO and Dapol.

Alas, the layout is nowhere near as far on as yours though... so thumbs up here from one modeller to another. Kat :-)

Many thanks Kat for the kind comments. Do you have a layout topic? Hope your layout is progressing well.

Apologies for the delay replying, been another busy few months with work and also the a new arrival to the family ... Rosie the Labrador! She’s now 6months old and a time waster and yes - she has visited the shed!

I have managed to make some progress to the layout though; 18 additional lights have been added to the platforms of the terminal station ...

A compact additional board has been added to the lower fiddle yard sidings with 8 additional roads to allow for the storage of additional loco’s. This still allows good access to the wiring of the main layout board above. I have also added a 25m long reel of LEDs to illuminate under the baseboards, also to illuminate the lower sidings and connecting track.

Two of the recently released Hornby Class 87 loco’s in Virgin Trains livery were purchased and also seen below next to a ‘Limby’ version - one will be renumbered and renamed. A shame the recent Hornby announcement doesn’t have any liveries proposed to be released (in particular Intercity Executive), I guess because they are still outstanding the 2019 versions of 87001 and 87002.

Wow ... well I guess with the size of your layout and the depth of your fleet and rolling stock any missing liveries could be acquired and pro-repaints done. I have been trying for months to source decals to do a Malcolm logistics class 90 and then out of the blue Hornby are doing it but that's no help, I dont want a Hornby 90 now that the Bachmann Class 90 has landed.

The trials and tribulations of a model railway builder !!!

Anyway I have managed to acquire two sound decoders for my second and third Bachmann 90s but I am having to sacrifice at least one of my fleet so the Heljan 86 is probably going, which is fine, I never seem to hold on to my Heljan 86s, they all end up going, a week or so after buying this one, someone only went and put up one in Caledonian sleeper livery, I was so miffed ... I will get a Caledonian sleeper livery 86 in the future but the here and now it's all about DB Cargo and the Bachmann 90 here and now.

Great layout !

Are you going to repaint the Limby Virgin class 87 to match the correct grey of the Hornby ones? I know it is cause by them used base yellow plastic with no undercoat.

Many thanks for the comments DBC90024 and Muddy! I did see an excellently Class 87 repainted into IC Exec and weathered on EBay before Christmas but a lucky chap from RMWeb beat me to it! With Hornby not announcing any further 87s during 2020 its on the to-do list to purchase an IC Swallow version and use it as a base to repaint. However now that Heljan have announced some 86/4s and 86/6s, I have a few of those on pre-order .... so might need even more sidings at some stage!

Regarding the Limby Virgin 87, to be honest the incorrect/too-light grey never really that Lima produced never really grated with me too much - however it is noticeable when placed next to a correct Hornby flavour - so good suggestion to repaint. I am beginning to retire the Limby 87s to the display shelves though, as I do prefer the motors, control and power of the new 87s so much more. However the Limby chassis and motor is pretty good and reliable, especially with the extra pickups.

Some original Lima virgin class 87s still seem to get a better price than the blue city of London ones. Near £40 rather than £20.

Out of interest how much does it cost to do a repaint with transfers?

Apologies for the slow reply! Do you mean a professional repaint (I don’t know how much those cost) or repainting yourself?

I’ve repainted a few 87s into Virgin livery and the shopping list has included:

- Railmatch 261 Virgin Grey

- Railmatch 260 Virgin Red

- Railmatch 202 Warning panel yellow

- Fox Transfers: F4761/9 - Virgin Class 87 Locomotive Livery (enough for two locos)

- Shawplan nameplate

- Shawplan DP87-02 Roof Mounted Inergen Fire Protection Tanks

* Other suppliers available!

So overall, to repaint one loco yourself is about £20 but to do two or more at the same time the cost per loco will reduce as you’ll only require the new nameplates, roof tanks and possibly transfers.

Hope this helps

The recently released 87001 Stephenson / Royal Scot arrived safe and sound and runs lovely, bringing back fond memories of many trips up and down the WCML during the early 2000s.

I’ve also started to measure up and design the canopies and details such as lights etc for the through station platforms. As the platforms are curved, I’m planning to construct the canopies from Evergreen styrene sections - my first ever styrene scratchbuild - wish me luck! A decent winter/colder weather project for the house while the shed is a bit too chilly during these winter months.

I had a visit to Stafford station following the excellent Stafford exhibition to take a few pics as inspiration for the platform canopies, buildings and layout of the lights and clutter etc. I’ll take a few progress pics as the project progresses.

Perfect!

I am guessing the sequence is:

1.strip and clean body

2. Any modifications for cab jumper cables, fill hole for pantograph selection switch, etc

3. Black under coat ( does roof!)

4. White under coat on ends

5. Yellow ends

6. Virgin grey

7. Virgin red

8. Gloss varnish

9. Transfers

10.Matt varnish

11. Fit name plate, windows, pantograph, jumper cables, fire extinguishers and electrical cables on roof.

12. Weathering

13. Paint cab interior and fit driver.

14. Admire good work!

Of course masking the bits you want to keep!

Any pictures of the ones you have repainted against one straight out of the box?

Hi, I have been following this layout for a while and I am loving every bit of it! Like everyone else has said this layout is outstanding! I do have a couple of questions though. Where did you get the girder bridge parts from? Also. I saw you had the NSE Olympic class 87 in your collection. Where did you get the transfers for it?

all the best, Matthew

Painting to Virgin Red I would put the sequence as...

1.strip and clean body

2. carry out modifications

3. spray with grey primer

4. correct any rough details

5, spray with grey primer

6. spray ends with white primer

7. spray ends yellow

8. mask yellow areas

9. spray orange cantrail stripe

10.  mask orange canrail - these 2 could be replaced with decals or using a lining pen/paint pen

11. spray roof well grey

12. mask roof well

13. spray virgin red areas with red primer

14. spray virgin red

15. mask virgin red

16. spray virgin grey areas

17. mask virgin grey areas

18. spray roof black

19. remove masking

20. touch up any rough areas by hand

21. paint small detail areas by hand

22. spray with gloss varnish

23. apply decals

24. spray with gloss varnish

25. reassemble (except glazing and pantograph) and fit nameplates

26. spray with satin varnish (including underframe)

27. fit glazing and pantograph

28. paint cab interior

29. reassemble whole loco

30. weather!

Quite a list.  Everyone has their own method, I always start with light colours first and work my way to dark

I'm glad I don't do as much respraying these days, I don't have the time!

That’s broadly the sequence to follow although I’ve heard it’s usually better to apply the lighter colours first such as the warning panel yellow, then Virgin red, before the Virgin dark grey etc. My art skills are certainly not a strength either! I’ve not yet properly weathered any of my locos or stock, trying to concentrate on progressing the layout but I do divert to a rolling stock/loco project every now and then.

I’ve taken a few pics below of the other Virgin liveried 87s that I’ve painted and compared to a Lima original 87003 Patriot fitted with the Hornby ‘Limby’ chassis. Each of my Lima/Limby locos have been partially detailed with handrails and other modifications along the way ....

Hi Matthew, many thanks for the kind comments. The girder bridge that takes the railway from the terminal station over the through station is made from the Dapol C003 girder bridge - a few of these sections joined togethe before being spray painted. A couple more pics of the bridge are below ...

Regarding the NSE liveried 87012, it’s an EBay purchase from quite a few years ago that was already painted with transfers fitted. It’s not the best paint job in the world, I’ve done a bit of detailing and touching up of the paint and a chassis swap to fit a Limby version, but a few blemishes remain (should add that to the to-do list!)

All the 87s look great. Very interesting to see the different types and your resprays all together.

87012 is an interesting addition, I never understood why it was in NSE colours for the Olympic bid but maybe I missed something obvious. Interesting loco all the same.

Thanks for the updates and photos. I don't often post, but as a WCML fan I am always following your updates with interest.

All the best,

Dave

The hand rails and jumpers really lift the fronts. Needs to be done with Hornby class 86s as they just paint them on!

I need to wait for good weather and do a batch of them.

Thanks again for the comments. I’ve commenced work on constructing the canopies for the through station;

First step was to create a template using wallpaper lining paper cut to size, including marking out where the OLE masts are situated.
E2F08F27-3001-4F35-9582-2DD771846266.jpeg.09c0e7c2599f9c6eed9d861b91aa78ec.jpeg

Next step was to construct the frames of the canopies using styrene strips and H girders.

I’ve test-fitted the frames and very happy with the results so far.

I’ve also constructed the many columns to support the canopies. Next steps will be to spray paint, fit the columns, fit the canopies and roofing, install LED lighting, then construct a few buildings/waiting rooms.

Back when Virgin was withdrawing locos and coaches (with Pendolinos incoming) some locos were repainted to 'celebrate their service'. A public poll was set up to choose what livery two 87s should be painted in. 87019 was painted in LNER lined black, while NSE was chosen for 87012 (it was also renamed 'The Olympian'). Now I think I am right in saying that the London 2012 bidding was going on around then, and they may have sponsored one of the repaints. I know a GNER HST power car carried a 'London 2012' logo for a long time with 'Back the Bid', then 'Candidate City' and finally 'Host City' wording. I am happy to be corrected if wrong on any details however.

Another project that’s been progressing in recent weeks is making signs etc for Davidson Parkway, the six platform through station. Hopefully can find some time during the upcoming bank holiday weekend to install them and detail the platforms.

I’ve completed the canopy project for the through station (Davidson Parkway). Three canopies were installed, one for each platform, a bit fiddly around the OLE masts but the templates made from lining paper worked well so each canopy fitted perfectly. Roof sections around the OLE mast were then added and lights wired to the control panel.

I also installed 20 of these lamp post lights from Layouts4U, really pleased with how they look; https://www.layouts4u.net/oo-scale-lighting/oo-scale-lampposts/616-pack-of-4

A selection of pics below; next on the to-do list is to add some details to each platform and build a few waiting room/office buildings under the canopy (similar styling to those upon Stafford station).

I'm interested in the lights you've fitted as I have the relevant page open in my browser at the moment. Is there any reason you've fitted them across the platforms? I was thinking they'd fit parallel to the tracks. How do they fit to the platform surface?

Hi, I visited the Stafford show back in February and had a drive afterwards to Stafford station to take a few pictures of the layout of the platform layout, signs etc, including the lights upon the platforms. As the pictures below show, the lights are fitted across the platform instead of parallel.

Regarding fitting to the platforms ... simply drill a vertical hole through the platform surface and baseboard (same diameter drill bit as the pole of the light), then thread the wires through, then I’ve used a very small dab of PVA on the base of the light poles to secure into place. Hope this helps.
