Well, yesterday a former colleague friend of mine dropped into Hither Green, and managed to grab some details of the existing side of the shed, especially the roof

What surprised me was the roof trusses appear to be preformed concrete beams bolted together. I was expecting steel

And the girders appear to be the same as my OO varigirders that I have, and appear to be the right size luckily enough

Note the Inspection Pits,  they are shallow "Steam loco " pits and you have to go underneath  "bent double".

It occurs to me they could be the last example of a  working depot  with steam loco pits.  Can anyone think of anywhere else with them?

Slade Green from memory has them, Inverness probably, Eastleigh are some that spring to mind but pits did vary in depth

It’s  an X class 4-DO-4 loco. Fitted with the same power unit as the cobo, Crossley HST V8 power unit. Lasted a lot longer in service. One of my older videos from a couple of years ago shows one being started for the first time in preservation

  • 47606odin changed the title to Hither Green TMD project Chunnel and Workbench

Well, I noticed Hattons had some new 33’s in, and having dawdled and put their last one in my basket at least 4 times, I’ve bought a second blue one. I’m not missing out again, so this will become 33055 to go with 022 (I just need to keep them away from 47455 and we’ll all be good) so that’s now 6 cromptons.....my shed is full, and with the 73’s filling the yard when they come out....I might need a bigger depot or to dispose of some of my impulse purchases

I’ve also added workbench to the thread title, as as we move forward there’ll be less railway build and more of the kit building weathering and detailing side of the hobby.

I’ll also be adding some new play lists on my YouTube channel to make things easier to find projects wise

things I want to achieve this year

1, finish the depot accomodation block

2, finish the pits

3, build the rail built buffer stops

4, finish 50032 (should be one of the first things achieved)

5, build Paul Rolley TML wagon kits (bought and currently in the post)

6, build my MM1 TTA tank wagon

7, 3 more sound fitted weathered numbered locos, most likely all 33’s

8, finish 60018. Now have everything needed.

9, progress on the YOB

this will leave on the back burner

1, shed roof (however this will be progressed as and when the ground level part of the shed has been completed)

2, conversion of 45113

3, conversion of 20901 and 904

4, project Ludgershall tractor

I think that’s most of the things I have on the bench, although I feel I’m missing something quite large.

so hopefully that’ll focus me a bit for this year and allow me to get something progressed nicely

When you break our hobby down into individual tasks it does surprise how much there is to do.   And that highlights the number of differing skills that are needed too.

Some come quite naturally to me and others, well, thank God for RTR, plug & play, plonk & place.

the advantage of not making a specific location is the fact you can plonk and play more, this so far has been enjoyable as up until this layout that is what I have basically done. This is most definitely more of a challenge, and sometimes makes my brain hurt. Thank heavens for the help of the likes of Steve Bell and Steve Smith...
