The 2018 Uckfield Model Railway Exhibition will once again be featuring a selection of some of the best quality layouts around. There will be full trade support as well as Demonstration and Society stands. Licensed Restaurant within the Civic Centre will be open throughout the weekend. There will be bacon rolls for early arrivals to purchase.

Of the 16 layouts there will no less than 12 different scale/gauge combinations represented. Standard and narrow gauge British, Irish and Continental prototypes.

Layouts expected to attend include:

St Pierre et la rue Perrin - 1:34 scale 16.5mm gauge
Narrow gauge French urban steam tramway layout from Christopher Payne, Wiltshire - CM 1997 to 2002.
St. Martin's Wharf - 7mm/ft scale 32mm gauge (0)
Colonel Stephens might have been East Anglian light railway built by Bob Alderman and displayed by the Yeovil MRG - RM Jun. 2018.
Itchen End Goods Depot - 7mm/ft scale 32mm gauge (0)
Minimum space standard gauge industrial scene featuring DCC sound by Uckfield MRC member Brian Wilson.
The Yard - 7mm/ft scale 32mm and 16.5mm gauges (0 and 0-16.5)
New layout by Martin Coombs and friends featuring an operational gantry crane and radio controlled vehicles - second exhibition.
Fintonagh - 7mm/ft scale 21mm gauge (0-21)
New layout by Dave Holman, builder of Arigna Town in 7mm/ft scale, portraying the Irish 3ft gauge Clogher Valley Railway - debut exhibition.
Hobbiton End - 5.5mm/ft scale 9mm gauge
Simon Addelsee's layout portrays a terminus in the Shire, home of the Hobbits in J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings - RM Sep. 2018.
Leysdown - 4mm/ft scale 18.83mm gauge (P4)
1930s model with DCC sound of the Sheppey Light Railway terminus in North Kent by Uckfield MRC member Adrian Colenutt - MRJ 160.
Brighton East - 4mm/ft scale 18.2mm gauge (EM)
Southern Region rail terminus where third rail EMUs prevail on passenger services by Dave and Matt Smith, Hampshire - BRM May 2017.
Clevedon (WC&PR) - 4mm/ft scale 18.2mm gauge (EM)
The Weston, Clevedon & Portishead Railway's main station and headquarters by Andrew Ullyott, Somerset - MRJ 229 & RM May 2017.
Much Murkle - 4mm/ft scale 16.5mm gauge (00)
Fictitious GWR Herefordshire branch terminus by Nick Wood, Berkshire - HM Jul. 2012 and BRM Feb. 2015.
College Halt - 4mm/ft scale 16.5mm gauge (00)
Based on Whitehall Halt, the tiny Culm Valley Light Railway station in Devon, built by students from the Uckfield College MRC - debut exhibition
Llanfair Caereinion - 4mm/ft scale 9mm gauge (00-9)
Scale model of the GWR Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway terminus c1935 from Andy Cundick, Wiltshire.
Lakebank - 3mm/ft scale 14.2mm gauge (3mm finescale)
Furness Railway branch line set in the early LMS period 1923-1930 by the Launceston and District MRC - MRJ 250.
Hinksey Yard - 1:148 scale 9mm gauge (British N)
Portrayal of the Oxfordshire DB Schenker (EWS) local distribution centre and mainline by the Epsom and Ewell MRC.
St Blazey - 2mm/ft scale 9.42mm gauge (2mm finescale)
Part of John Greenwood 's North Cornwall Line "Grand Plan", the layout portrays the GWR semi-roundhouse and works - MRJ 235.
Foxcote New Pit - 2mm/ft scale 9.42mm gauge (2mm finescale)
Fictitious North Somerset industrial scene set in the period following the 1st World War by Jerry Clifford, Wiltshire.

Public access to the Civic Centre is via either the free High Street car park (Civic Approach), or the Tesco Superstore. The venue is also only three minutes walk away from both the railway and bus stations.

Additional car parking at the station car park - £2 per day at weekend.

A small correction if I may Adrian. Much Murkle is not based in Hertfordshire, but in Herefordshire where the cider is far superior.

Looking forward to getting Much Murkle out again as it hasn't seen daylight since February until last week when I decided to spruce it up a bit with a fresh coat of paint and attend to a few maintenance items.

 

There will also be a few new items of stock appearing to confuse the operators.

Fintonagh is my take on the Clogher Valley Railway in Northern Ireland. The prototype never had and branches off its 'mainline' from Tynan to Maguiresbridge, but to fit the space I had available, I've created one, with shades of Fintona, of horse tram fame. 7mm scale, 21mm gauge, it is also in the style of my 'Loose End Tramway', which appeared at Uckfield too many years ago, in that it is a cameo town centre scene, with the railway hemmed in by buildings. The CVR locos were all 0-4-2Ts, with tramway skirts, that always went cab first. There were also two diesels, a tractor unit and Railcar No 1, which went to the Donegal when the line closed in the early 1940s.

For those arriving early the Uckfield Civic Centre's newly refurbished restaurant 'Luxfords' will be opening at 9am each day serving bacon filled and sausage filled rolls along with tea/coffee.

Went to the show today, and enjoyed the event.

 

Good to see a town centre location for the show and just a few minutes from the railway and bus stations. Hopefully managed to attract some passing visitors.

 

The layout selection and quality were good as was the food in the restaurant.

I attended yesterday.  The journey by rail is dead easy and Uckfield station is but a short walk - uphill from the station, downhill to.

 

There was a good selection of trade.  The presence of Squires meant that my armoury of drills is now complete again!  I also bought the new George Dent weathering book but could not stay awake long enough to read it on the train.  i was also a bit dozy during the afternoon and must thank the attentive steward for checking that I was OK - which I was, thanks.

 

There was both a good selection of layouts and a selection of good layouts!  Behind Hinksey Yard five RMweb badges were in evidence, each worn by a different person, so perhaps this 'ere forum is still a force for goodness in the land.  I admired the delightfully grubby 100 ton oil tankers.  On Much Murkle I did not spot Nick's new cut'n'shut coaches but did notice a slip coach forming part of the branch passenger - nice one.  P4 was represented by Leysdown.  I have seen it several times before but had never noticed the sound of the sea in the background - much easier, surely, than modelling the sea itself!  I was also quite taken by Lakebank, a 3mm essay with track to 14.2 mm gauge, and by Llanfair Caereinion, Andy Cundick's fine tribute to the Welshpoool and Llanfair.  It was not obvious until I had been told that the track gauge was 1mm shy of scale.  2mmFS fielded John Greenwood's St Blazey, which someone should display alongside Diesels In The Duchy one day, and by Jerry Clifford's Foxcote New Pit.  Anyone, including me, pleading difficulty with larger scales should look carefully at those layouts.  Then there was Andrew Ullyott's Clevedon [EM], dripping with the Colonel Stephens atmosphere and Dave Smith's Brighton East [EM], a very plausible might-have-been which is always a pleasure to see, and lots, lots more, all with their own charms.

 

I was only mildly miffed to be told by the catering outlet that I could not have a cuppa without food.  Fine: I'll have sausage, chips and beans several hours early to save me cooking when I get home.  I'm sure that other solutions are available.

Good to have a chat with a few 2mmFS peeps and also thanks to Brighton East for demonstrating how they run their trains off iPhones (involves JMRI and a raspberry pi I believe)

For the record a couple of Awards were made over the weekend.

 

The Keith Nock Memorial Trophy - the "best in show" as voted for by exhibitors, members of the trade and Uckfield MRC members - was awarded to Foxcote New Pit, the 2mm/ft finescale layout constructed by Jerry Clifford. Runner up was Hinksey Yard in British N by the Epsom & Ewell Model Railway Club.

 

The Best in Show plaque - the "best in show" as voted for by our visiting public - was awarded to The Yard, the 0 & 0-16.5 layout constructed by Martin Coombs and friends. We had joint runners up with Hinksey Yard in British N by the Epsom & Ewell Model Railway Club and the narrow gauge Hobbiton End in 5.5mm scale by Simon Addelsee sharing the honours.

 

For those interested the honours were also shared for the infamous Saturday evening social quiz. Teams from Clevedon and St Blazey/Foxcote New Pit went away with the chocolates. One team scored a perfect score in one of the rounds - note to self, must make it more difficult!

We were thrilled, honoured  and not a little surprised to be awarded the Keith Nock memorial trophy particularly as it was voted for by our fellow exhibitors. To give an idea of how difficult it was to choose thanks to the very high standard of exhibits assembled by Adrian I asked my operating team who they had voted for once we had submitted our slips and of the nine votes available to us, we had made seven different choices!
