Advance Notice – The Wishlist Poll 2018

From The Poll Team

 

As many of you will be aware, The Wishlist Poll – which normally runs annually – ‘took a holiday’ in 2017.

 

We are pleased to say that we are back for 2018 and The Poll will be hosted here on RMweb from early on Monday 15 October until midnight on Saturday 3 November. We hope to publish the results within a few days of closing. Andy York – who constructs ‘the computerised aspects’ for us – has no ‘influence’ on the content and kindly acts as a volunteer in his own time.

 

A lot has happened since we published the 2016 results! The breakdown of 00 items announced so far – and sometimes even delivered by now – is as below:

• 10          From the Top 50
• 17          From the High Polling segment
• 9            From the Middle Polling segment (six were above the overall half-way mark)
• 3            From the Low Polling segment         

 

Notice the predominance of items towards the high end.

 

However, two additional items were announced that we didn’t have listed:

• Rail-mounted Gun. Oxford Rail
• PRA Wagon. Kernow Model Centre

 

What’s new for 2018?

 

We have much that’s new – and we’ll explain that further in the next section – but first some N news.

 

About 70% of our effort was going to the N Poll, but it was only attracting about 20% of the voters. Added to this, our ‘lead role’, Brian Macdermott, now has more restrictions placed on his available time – he is a ‘carer’ for his disabled wife – so we have taken the decision to not run N.

 

But all is not lost! Discussions are in hand for another group to take that on in the future using our Guide notes as a basis.

 

The good news for 00 modellers is that – along with the deletion of the 39 items announced since the 2016 Results – we have ‘freed up some space’ and will be listing 92 new items in response to your suggestions.

 

What is the running order of The Poll? And what is new in each of the 20 categories?

 

The running order is still the same but we have clarified some titles. We think you’ll like what we have for you!

Bachmann has effectively offered that option with the Underground S stock for the LTM as has Hornby by selling the 5-BEL driving coaches separately from the intermediates.

 

Although it seems too late for this year, would it make sense to include a sort of sub-vote for these long EMUs asking whether people would buy un-prototypical shorter versions (perhaps with the additional vehicles being sold separately for those who want them)? That approach is quite common for European EMUs.

The list above only shows what's 'new' (or amended etc). When you go in to vote (from 15 October) you will find the Class 120 waiting for you.

 

It may hearten you to know that not only has it been the highest-voted DMU since 2012, it has been in the overall The Top 10 since then, too.

Chris M was correct, you highlight this as a general whishlist poll and then make it OO only as you are not sufficiently interseted in anything else. If you had titled this as only a OO wish list then no problem; but you did not.

As part of the 'handover' of our Guide notes - free, gratis and for nothing (barring a few reasonable caveats) - we suggested that we would, in future, call 'our' Poll The 00 Wishlist Poll so that they could then distinguish themselves as The N Wishlist Poll (if they so desired). We haven't yet heard back and time has moved on.

I model in 4mm, 3.5mm and 1:48 narrow gauge. I have absolutely no idea what is and isn’t already available in N Gauge, although I suspect there are far more models in waiting than in 4mm. So how would I know where to start in listing N Gauge items for wishlisting?

 

The N Gauge fraternity is entitled to a wishlist. But it needs to be compiled as expertly as possible. A 4mm-centric team is not the best option.

We hope 00 modellers will 'feel the benefit' with what we now list and we also hope that the N Team gets itself together for the benefit of N modellers.

Thanks Brian and the rest of the team for bringing back the poll - even if the N-ists are disappointed, which I understand, but equally understand why something has had to give.  If there are posters who feel sufficiently strongly, perhaps they could volunteer to take over the reins.

 

On the new items that you are proposing I am particularly pleased to see stock to match some of the suggested locos - or already released locos.  Orphaned releases is something I have commented on in  previous years.  I hope that the poll results back this up with equal enthusiasm for the locos as well as for the stock.

 

There are however still orphaned locomotives and perhaps you and the team might like to consider for next year:

 

GCR coaches to go with the 2 x GCR Director class - Barnum stock might be something that is a bit different from run of the mill coaches, alternatively GCR clerestory coaches.

GCR brake van and goods stock to go with the 2-8-0 and 0-6-0 - note the Bachmann Collectors' Club GCR goods wagon release included 1 GCR wagon, I CLC and an LNER, so we can say this has not yet been done.

LYR coaches to go with the 2-4-2T.

SECR goods stock to go with the C Class including a brake van (not out of period Dance Hall please)

 

Many of these not too specific suggestions would have existed through to BR and some into preservation, so the options for the manufacturer to get full value from his moulds are great.

A bit disappointed there isn't much in the modern era. I know there's a fair bit, but I always see announcements for some sort of new steam engine but not as regular for something modern.

 

I would have thought the 195/331 combo would be good as once you've CAD'd the first, the second class would be less work to adjust.

 

I'm also a bit surprised TOCs don't get in on the act and stick their name and brand with it to share in the profits.

Eleven of the 92 'all new items' for 2018 are post-steam era, with most from the past decade. That's nearly 12% of new entries. Class 357 didn't appear last year, but has been 'blended' with certain other Electrostars (as in Post #1).

 

Of the 39 items announced since 2016 (from what we list), ten have been from the post-steam era or very much towards the end of it.

 

We are always happy to take suggestions.

Like other N gauge modellers I'm sorry to see the N Gauge poll being dropped. I've not seen any requests for helpers on the N Gauge Forum, or via the N Gauge Society though; I'm sure there are plenty of N Gauge modellers on here who could also have helped. What qualitfications are needed?
