That's what I tried first but I couldn't keep a decent sized motor out of the cab area. There's no virtue in getting the motor horizontal, any angle will do as long as it's entirely inside the casing with a bit of room to allow for compensation/springing movement.

Hi

Further to the sketch drawing and measurements of Fowler 0-4-0DM 22889 of 1939 which I posted earlier, here are the photos taken at Ropley on the Mid-Hants Railway at the same time - July 1999.  I seem to remember that the loco had been pulled down from the siding beside the main line (aka "the broken toy cupboard") for restoration as it had been the line's first working loco.  I took the opportunity to examine it then, having seen it working in the 80's and knowing several had been used in the Solent area in various capacities. Despite some work being done, it was soon sidelined again after it was found to need more work than a preserved railway's limited resources could supply for a machine of such limited use.  Even with it's excellent local pedigree, I believe it was subsequently scrapped. Talking to a colleague who drove it at Ropley revealed that, with it's mechanical gearbox and clutch, it was hard physical work to shunt with - certainly harder than the English Electric '350's we were used to.  No doubt the advertising by Sentinel and Hunslet twenty years after this was built was focusing on the ease of use of their more modern diesel hydraulics in comparison to this loco's generation of diesel mechanical.

All parts now drawn for the test etch.

This is what it looks like on my screen now, all the parts are taken in line from the main drawing so that they can be easily identified with where they came from. It does spread a lot at this point but all will be gathered together at the next stage. All duplicated and mirrored parts are included here.

The lower part of the drawing with just six layers (back, front, both and the three white layers to cancel them) showing. Only these layers will go into the file for the etching tool.

The first 150hp Fowler now finished and ready for the paintshop, it was going to be 600s but has now been changed to 400s after finding a photo of the latter in SR livery. This has led to a few alterations, 400s didn't have the gas conditioner exhaust (although I did make the pattern for this) and had kept its headlights.

I'm now on with correcting the etch for production, all the moulds are made, drawings to tidy up and instructions to write. We might just have the kit out for Scaleforum next month but it depends on delivery from Photo Etch - definitely for Manchester in December.

That looks well, Mike. I seem to remember you saying something about two versions or lengths of loco. Which one is this, is this one suitable as an industrial or are both?

What diameter wheels does the kit need?
