Great Model Railway Challenge - Channel 5

Recommended Posts

I've now seen the second one, and enjoyed that too. Can't argue with the winner, though if Walford had actually worked properly it would have been my choice - good though it was, the Blackadder link was pretty tenuous. The sci fi layout didn't really work and was the most unfinished, but there were still some decent the things in there.

It's not 'serious' modelling really, but that's not intended as a criticism - it was what can you do in 24h with a silly theme. And the answer is that you can build a very credible model railway.

The link seemed pretty tenuous on screen as they missed out all but one of our Blackadder Cameos.

We had...

Meltches Manor (37 mile behind the front)

Nursy and Mr Smith in the field hospital

The opening credits, with Baldrick with his triangle and Melchet and darling.

The red Barron

Flashheart and his crashed plane

And of course the bunker scene

All can be seen in my video

The crew had to get through the other layouts so must have cut those bits

Only Meltches Manor and Nursey didn't make it on screen - everything else appeared. I liked the Red Barron and thought the smoke from Flashheart's plane in the trench was very effective. What smoke generator did you use?

Think the generator was from Railroom electronics, can't remember bthe brand. It was a basic one, we use a bit of our £100 other item budget on it

I think what I've picked up so far about doing the Challenge is:

1) Good project management is vital. Know who's doing what, when, right through from the pre-build to the final whistle. And allow time for 'issues'.

1a) Try to arrange anything that requires 'drying time' to happen overnight.

2) Keep it simple (apart from the animations). Fine to include sidings etc as 'Strangers' did, but there's no need to add point motors for the Challenge (though you could make allowance for them if you wished to motorise them post-challenge). Maybe even temporarily pin some of the points in one position so you can't accidentally send the train up the siding (like the scifi team did). Missenden seemed to have built quite an elaborate control panel (or was that another pre-build?), and the judges don't judge those... Get the track done and wired simply (i.e. just one controller feed to each circuit), then get on with the scenery.

You may be right. However, the copy of the rules linked to a few pages back does include "NOTE – teams can operate

points (manually or remotely) as they see fit. Extra credit will be awarded for remotely operated points."

On that point (pun intended) we did have point motors on 'Go Forth', but just the Peco surface mounted ones, which seemed to work fine, though one in particular was quite temperamental. From what I recall, the judges never even mentioned or asked about them! My memory isn't great though, so who knows!

I was thinking more that (apart from the rail gun), so far everything we've seen operated has been going round in circles rather than shunting. If that's all that's being demonstrated, then there's no need to motorise the siding points.

Well... I really liked it.

Given the time constraints the modelling has been amazing. I would still be laying track if I had started a layout at the same time the first show was filmed!

They have managed to make what is certainly not a spectator sport into decent telly.

Those complaining that it isn't a specialist modelling show are missing the point. If you want to see content aimed at the likes of us, dont go to prime time terrestrial tv, instead try Youtube or instagram or one of umpteen very good blogs and forums.

The S-Stock is made by Bachmann and was very kindly supplied by the London Transport museum for which we were very grateful. The museum is the only source. Although we did not get it running on the day it did look quite nice as a (very expensive) static exhibit. We did have the on-board DCC controlled announcements working as an 'animation' which was not shown.

Our points were motorised and DCC controlled so that had the S-stock been running we would have been able to switch the S-stock and 350 in to their respective platforms automatically under JMRI control, and the signals set their correct aspects based on the point positions. We even had a motorised point on the Faller car system so that we could set the route for the bus down bridge street with a big red latching mushroom switch. Because it was market day the switch was clearly labelled 'DO NOT PRESS'.

I spotted them all. A brilliant piece of modelling and a worthy winner. Well done.

The themes given were just as stated - 'Movies', 'British TV Shows', and this week, 'Globetrotting' - nothing more, nothing less. The rest was up to us.

We did have to submit our plans to the Production company, so they could avoid any duplication, but I doubt that was an issue.

Interesting that both winners had war themes. More opportunities for moving gimmicks to impress the judges, especially as they all worked.

Also by chance the series is being screened leading up to the 100th anniversary of the end of the Great War.

THEY SHALL NOT BE FORGOTTEN!

It’s good to see younger members of the hobby in the teams

That will do a lot for the hobby in itself

The links with Black Adder Goes Forth didn't seem at all tenuous to me and I thought your layout was the most accomplished of the three in reflecting its theme. The last three cameos were all shown and referenced, albeit briefly. ISTR they also dwelt quite a lot on the Manor to explain kit bashing but not unfortunately its  significance to the story. Presumably the judges did see all six and judged accordingly.

So far it looks like the producers have been quite canny in the order they're showing the heats in.

I just found the list of heat themes online elsewhere, so I can repeat them here:

Heat 1 - Classic Movies

Heat 2 - British TV

Heat 3 - Globetrotting

Heat 4 - Fire and Ice

Heat 5 - Water World

(this is transmission order, not filming order)

Water World? Hope the modelling is better than the movie was.  :O

Many moons ago I presented to our club a new layout idea based on the Channel Tunnel. It was a washing up basin and a roll of fake grass. I wonder what the judges would have thought of that........
