Today I put down the platform sides and shaped the wood to fit the layout a bit better underneath, then I used filler to fill out the top of the platforms.

To create the curves in the ridged platform sides I had to put them in boiling water.

I then put some ballast down in the platform area.

I have also painted the depot concrete colour on the bottom level, this will need some more coats later.

More to come!

So today I carried out some real engineering works to the track. We had a broken rail on the single line approach to the station. This was caused by malfunctioning heavy machinery (I dropped a lamp whilst working on the layout the other day!)

Also I have rough sanded down the platforms, the apparently smooth finish filler is no such thing, so I've used filler to fill in the filler. When the filler dried it just seemed to "crater" as in subside in certain areas too.

I was also a little bit silly and bought a FGW Dapol HST bookset to compliment the rest of the stock, now to locate the rest of the carriages for sale.

So I was having a little running session with my new FGW HST - new to me, I bought it off of another member of an N Gauge group on Facebook, and I couldn't help myself but to do some more modelling! So here is the proof; (excuse the mess of trains all over the place).

Just a bit of painting and some scenic grass laid tonight, but we're finally getting somewhere!

I'm absolutely stuck on what to do for the tunnel mouths and the areas on top which seem fit for some good dioramas, but I can't figure out what I want on there, the top part of the layout; right hand side there is no road access so what ever is there must be rail related as rail is the only access. On the left I am thinking about a small row of warehouses on to a road. Still not sure though, would appreciate all the suggestions you have.

The multi layered tunnel I would close up and have separate height entrances a la outside kings cross it looks so good on Copenhagen fields and Gresley beat. At the other end you will need a foot bridge or level crossing. How else will workers come in for shifts or from lunch break. Unless you are running a dido.

The other end I was going to have a walking route from the end of the platforms, I like your idea of separate height entrances though

I'm having issues with a pair of peco st5 points, anybody have any idea why only this pair are shorting?
Which axles pick up on the HST? I assume it is only the rear that is powered. Have you got insulated rail joiners in the crossover?

I have had problems in the past with shorting out on the point V when there is a feed coming in from the ‘wrong’ end. Except for your reversing line (which I assume is isolated so that the juicer works) that crossover is the only place where you might have a back feed.

Does it happen on the outer circuit too?

The short occurs if metal wheels can touch both rails in the V as they will be opposite polarity.

If it’s not that, then I’m stuck too!

Paul.

On further inspection I see this arcing. It happens on both sets of peco set rack st5 points on that crossover... Surely both points can't be faulty? Why is this happening? The frogs are supposed to stop this as they are insulfrogs?

Also it seems to be mainly the Dapol HSTs that short here, but only sometimes other models do too.

Having used insulating fishplates between the points, it sorted the problem on the inner track... however after even putting masking tape over the outer points in all sorts of combinations I can only think that the set is faulty, which was probably the sole cause of the whole problem the first place and the fishplates being installed only treated the symptoms. So this will be replaced in January.

However I did come to find out if the trains are ran fast enough over the point the arcing doesn't have long enough to happen, so I took the opportunity to install a new Digikeijs DR5000 in place of the Hornby e-link. I am now using iTrain plus, and it is brilliant. In fact I was so impressed with it I went ahead and ordered two Digikeijs DR5088RC block detection/information feedback modules. Full automatic running here we come!!!

Here is a video of the running from earlier in the day;

Last night I put the brick work inside the tunnels, and I gave the top levels grey paint a second coat.

I've attached pictures of iTrain and the Digikeijs DR5000, amazing pieces of kit when combined together! Certainly recommend this set up.

Also been running some more trains today.

The block detection units have arrived this morning. I have read the instructions but I still am none the wiser of how to wire this on to my layout. More research is required! Also I took delivery of the final coaches to make a full take of a FGW HST set. Here is a cheeky video.

So I've wired in all the block sections, however one block section (section 23) keeps activating other blocks local to it on the layout which are free. As far as I can tell it shouldn't be happening because there are no places where any of the wires meet! So some more investigation is required there...

In other news I have added a Roco Multimaus for additional operational interest, it also will run the layout without the use of iTrain, so in the event of going to an exhibition and the laptop were to fail... they layout would be still operable.

I must admit I am a fan of the simple to use Multimaus. I use it all the time through my z21 even though I can operate my layout via the android tablet.

There is just something in having a physical controller that software can never replicate. I thoroughly enjoy having a stop button in front of me in case it all goes pear shaped too rather than having to grab a mouse and go hunting on a screen for the button.

So I made this layout today, this morning it was nothing more than a pile of wood and parts. Using the left overs from Weston Town. I have used a lost of scalescenes items for scenery, I just need to get some polystyrene for some embankments and I need to make a platform! Also need to think of a name for it and make its own thread.

The new layout looks great have you considered adapting the two layouts so they could be joined together to make a larger layout?

Now you've opened a can of worms there! In theory yes they can be linked really easily because they're both built on exactly the same method of baseboard construction which means the lower height on Weston Town and the height of the new small layout are exactly the same... I can see myself rather than just bolting them together when I want to join them, making a tamar bridge between the layouts or something...

Weston Town East sounds like a good idea considering what else I've been speaking about on this post!
