The most relevant bit...

Drivers within the expanded zone using non-compliant vehicles will pay a daily ULEZ charge of £12.50, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. These include:

• motorbikes that do not meet Euro 3 standards

• petrol cars and vans that do not meet Euro 4 standards (roughly the equivalent to not being more than fifteen years old for cars in 2021)

• diesel cars and vans that do not meet Euro 6 standards (roughly the equivalent to not being more than six years old for cars in 2021)

Flippantly it could be said that's lower than the NEC's 'on the day' parking charge, people will either have compliant vehicles or not and they'll have to pay the charge or not. I would say a greater percentage of visitors come to the NEC by car than Ally Pally.

Additionally that would come into effect inside the North and South Circular Roads from 25 October 2021 so it has no bearing on visitors to the 2019/2020/2021 shows.

It'll be my first time to this.

I've only every been to Warley before.

How does it compare?

A subjective question but personally speaking I find it a lot better than Warley. Granted I have only been to Warley once, in 2015, and I was a bit underwhelmed by that show, I was expecting something a lot bigger at Warley considering the adverts in the magazines etc and that it's in the NEC. It was still a perfectly good show but I still think London is the better. Only downside to the London show is the climb up the hill to the Palace. Will be my first time back since my heart attack last year (annoyingly right before last years show so I had to miss it) But I did do the 193 steps at Covent Garden tube station a couple of weeks ago so should manage the walk up the hill.

I`ve just read a report in today’s London Evening Standard (online) that there are now plans by the Ally Pally Trust to charge for car parking, probably commencing from 2020, to help towards its upkeep. This, together with the proposed congestion charges for older vehicles may well put end this historic venue being used for our and other exhibitions, as these additional costs will make it become too expensive to attend.

It is time to book my ticket.  Can someone please remind me what I have to do to get the BRM Subscriber discount?  Just tried it on that Ticket Factory site, put my sub number in the Promo Code box and it didn't like it.

Its L19 followed by your subs number, it does work as I have just tried it.

Remember that you ONLY get the discount if you are a hard copy subscriber, digital subscribers don’t qualify. You will have to put their ticket insurance into your basket before you can proceed to payment, but this can be removed before you actually authorise the payment, so you only pay for your tickets.

Thank you for that.  The Ticket Factory site and the subsequent Visa Payment system sign up was a bit of faff I must say!!

A note to others, it is L19 and your Sub Number but WITHOUT any leading zeros.

Hmmmmm,

Tried L19 and my customer ref no 9xxxxx not valid then tried L19 and service user number 9xxxxx still no joy.

Is it because I subscribed quarterly by DD and the opening offer was five issues for £5?.

The ticket website is not too good.

So how do I get tickets?.

Yours hopefully.

Sorry to nitpick, but it is Rolvenden and is P4. I'll be there helping out with it, and looking forward to it!

Does anybody have any transport recommendations? Coming from Leicestershire and would rather drive, sounds like the free car parks may fill up quickly.

Personally my transport recommendation would be to leave the car at home and take the train. If you book rail tickets now you can get 2 singles for a total of £55 (Leicester to Alexandra Palace with 2 changes) and you would probably spend that in fuel and parking charges, and don't get caught out with the Low Emission Zone. A friend of mine got caught out with that when coming to London.  He thought his car derived van would be okay as he thought it was only large vans and lorries and he got charged the £100. Also less stressful getting a train driver to do all the driving...you can sit back, relax and watch the world go by.

The venue is far nicer than Warley - much lighter and far more airy.  Also the layout of the stands always seems to me to be easier to follow than at Warley.  Overall I rate it as a consistently good show and one where you can actually get to all of it in a reasonable time but that does of course depend to some extent on what floats your particular boat model railway wise.

What might not be so good is the accessibility - while you get a top notch view of London going up the hill on the 'bus that has meant that you have either had to get on a 'bus or walk up the hill to get there from the Alexandra Palace  station or from a station which is covered by the same 'bus routes.  Plus of course you need to get to Kings Cross or elsewhere on the GN suburban network if you are coming that way.  Oddly after including the faff of changing mainline stations in London plus our decidedly pedestrian local train service into London it is usually a shorter journey time for me to the Warley show than it is to the much closer Ally Pally show - but generally it's well worth the extra hassle involved for me  in getting there.

I went by car once a good few years back and on the Sunday so it wasn't too bad but despite having to use at least 4 separate trains (including the UndergrounD, where LUL could easily ad a fifth train to that lot ) plus the 'bus up the hill I wouldn't even consider driving there on the Saturday (nor probably on the Sunday) as I long ago had my fill of driving in London traffic on routes I knew well (and this is one I don't know well).

A word of note,

The London Congestion Charge Zone is only in force from Monday – Friday (inside the A501). For the Low Emission Zone, if you go onto the TfL website, there is a facility where you can enter your vehicle reg number to check if you would be liable for any charges. Most of the charges apply to lorries, vans, mini buses,  and some pre 2002 vehicles, but on the whole cars are exempt. There is currently no charge to park at Ally Pally and for all the years it’s been held there, it will be a first if all the parking spaces were taken. In fact they have increased the number of spaces in recent years. Except for the Ice Skating Venue, there is no other event taking place.

With only 10 days to go I can't help noticing a distinct lack of excitement about this show and a noticeable secrecy on the part of those planning to attend.  Well, I have nothing to hide.  I plan to attend on the Saturday and expect to have breakfast at the Barrel Vault at St Pancras before deciding whether to ascend to the Northern Heights by tube or surface rail.  As others have said, the Ticket Factory webshite was a bit of a faff when I tried to use it but fortunately the expensive phone call [0844 something] to a human being did not keep me hanging on this time so long that it wiped out my subscriber discount.  Room for improvement here, chaps.

Chris, there's plenty of activity going on behind the scenes. We've got an interesting selection of short talks lined up on our Club stand (25 - just inside the door as you come into the Great Hall), and a couple of really nice collections being sold on behalf of members at our pre-owned stand in the West Hall.

Previews of the layouts are filtering out on Instagram and Twitter.
