jetmorgan
Had a very good day at the show on Saturday. A good mixture of layouts and sales/trade & exhibitors. I did like the West Hall as it seemed to be mostly full of layouts...all though a check on the floor plan showed that it had just less than half of the layouts at the show. It just seemed a lot quieter than the main hall and nicer to get around and view the layouts. Got plenty of photos which I need to start going through. I avoided the main trader stands (Bachmann, Dapol etc) as it was just looking too busy around them (granted I never look at what is on those stands as I can't afford anything there) On the subject of rucksacks, I didn't seem to be too much trouble there with them....there were a few that were quite large and the people having them on their backs seemed to have forgotten they were there. The problem I found were the couple of people I came across walking around with large suitcases on wheels. Picked up a couple of bargains...well I think bargains. 3 old Hornby Gresleys (China made, I presume Railroad range) and a couple of spare Gresley bodies for a total of £39 for a cut and shut GNR coach project

Ally Pally has slightly less than half that (for quite a bit more than half the admission fee) and I left about 3pm having arrived shortly after 10am. Not knocking AP, but on a cost/layout basis Warley is the winner for me. Yes Warley usually has just over 90 layouts and around 300 stands in total. The BRM shows are quite a bit smaller but are still very good sized shows. When you think about it all model railway exhibitions are all very good value for money when compared to other forms of live entertainment. 2

I enjoyed visiting today, but felt the balance wasn't quite right between number of layouts v number of stalls selling goods. How does Warley compare for number of layouts? Or Peterborough? Peterborough is exceptionally bad in this respect. I've been there twice. Assumed the lack of layouts was a glitch first time. Realised it wasnt second time. There won't be a third time. The people coming out of the matinee of Richard III as I was leaving at about 4.30 were rather smarter (though not as much as you might expect ) Generally though I find the atmosphere at AP rather better (in more than one sense!) than at many other shows. It's such a grand location in its own right that I always find it a real pleasure to visit just for that. Warley, I'm afraid, Is a show I've not bothered with for several years and thank goodness the major London Show is not at ExEl.

Kelly
Arrived with little issue with traffic etc, thankfully m1 was fairly quiet aside from the roadworks areas. Grabbed goody bag from the brm stand (part of the 5 for £5 offer, which gave a free ticket). Looking forward to a good show. Been a few years since last came here, the free ticket offer certainly helped make it a more viable option.
TrentValleyRailway
A great show with plenty on offer, got very busy at times but didn't feel to busy around the layouts. Highlights from all of the layouts are below and hoping the show has just as good a day today as yesterday. 8
Pacific231G
My pictures from the show yesterday were by no means comprehensive and tended to be details and scenes that caught my eye so don't necessarily reflect even which layouts I liked best (some of which I didn't get decent shots of) 1 The Bridge at Remagen 2. Johnstown Road O gauge (though my images are all of Porth Nefyn) More to follow. Edited March 24, 2019 by Pacific231G
Pacific231G
Here are the rest starting with Peter Smith and John Smith's North Foreland One of shipping on Burntisland in P4 (I have lots of images of this magnificent layout from other shows so took very few yesterday) Happisburgh Goods Depot (O gauge) St. Petroc (Gauge 1) and finally another of the N scale Bridge at Remagen and the O scale creek between Porth Nefyn and Johnstown Road I was also particularly impressed by Warton Road in Gauge 3 but seeing that followed by St. Petroc in Gauge 1 convinced me that the next EM gauge layout I saw was 3mm scale and that Andy Cundick's OOn3 Arigna had a track gauge of 9 not 12mm. Amazing how perceptions alter reality. Edited March 24, 2019 by Pacific231G

There was a march, I was on it - it was very good natured with no fractiousness that I was aware of (I found that comment untoward); it did, however mean some tube stations had to close for a while due to overcrowding. I was at AP today- maybe because some of the best layouts I'd seen before, it didn't give me a real "wow" effect. Burntisland and the Cambrian one (guides had sold out and I can't remember the name now) were my standout features, along with seeing most of the Slaters 4mm wagon range in the flesh being sold again by Eileen's and H&A. I did however have a 'careful now!' moment seeing Dapol's 7mm offerings which were quite tempting. 1

Invicta Informant
I attended the show on Saturday and I found this year's show bit overwhelming at times, and I have been to every Ally Pally show since 2011. I am not sure if it down to an increased visitor attendance or the fact that many 'big hitters' in the industry (Hornby, Bachmann, Dapol, Accurascale, Hatton's, Kernows, Rails of Sheffield, Gaugemaster and DCC Concepts) all had something worth having a look at on their stands. The layouts as always are excellent, if you got the chance to see them properly. I only got a glance from afar with a few of them and I completely missed The Bridge at Remagen. Johnstown Road and Burntisland 1883 are amongst my favourites. Lighterman's Yard always appeared to have had a crowd people around it. Not surprising as it has excellent details for a 2mm scale layout and when it was exhibited at my club's show back in January it won the People's Choice Award. Also, I approve of the extra seating in the hallway. Roll on next year's show.

A fraction of the size of some of the overhanging guts that have barged into me. How do you deal with those please? 1

The Cambrian layout was Johnstown Road (thugh I focussed on Porth Nefyn where I was particularly impresed by the ship model) so here are some more pictures of that and a few of the others. Arlingham in EM:after Warton Road I though this was 3mm scale Megantic American 2ft in 1:48 scale so hand made 1 inch gauge track Just a couple of gauge 3 Warton Road showing the size of cassettes needed for this scale and a couple more of North Foreland in O gauge Finally two more from Burntisland Edited March 25, 2019 by Pacific231G 1

RMweb Premium Ian Morgan Posted March 25, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 25, 2019 (edited) One of the highlights for me was "Habbaniya 1941", a moving diorama of the RAF base in Iraq, just before a major battle. Modeled in 'forced perspective', ranging from 1/32 at the front down to 1/700 at the rear, with moving trains and lorries, plus other animated items. Perhaps a solution to the ongoing saga of these large rucksacks that there should be a maximum size of rucksack allowed inside the venue. Only those rucksacks that is able to pass through a fixed cut-out slot on a display stand outside the venue, similar to that found by an airport check-in desk, will be allowed inside the venue. All those found to be oversized would have to be left in a specially provided cloakroom outside. As for some of these bags on trolleys, should they be banned altogether as they could constitute a tripping hazard? 1

All those found to be oversized would have to be left in a specially provided cloakroom outside. As for some of these bags on trolleys, should they be banned altogether as they could constitute a tripping hazard? I'm wondering whether the rucksack problem is mainly at the large shows. I attend between five and ten exhibitions a year but they are mainly specialist or smaller regional shows. Never had this problem at any, but I have at concerts where people are barging past you wearing rucksacks knocking people and pints everywhere. Usually student types. They don't even have to be large rucksacks, you can do damage with those little backpacks if trying to squeeze through a gap to get to the front. it's not nice to have a pint knocked out of your hand after paying £6 for it. Most venues now ban them. If you bring them they go in the cloakroom if one is available. I think it's just a lack of awareness. I wouldn't support an outright ban, but maybe a sign at the entrance saying something like "Beware of your rucksack" would be apt. Jason
