Great Model Railway Challenge - "Go Forth" - (Blackadder Themed Layout)

Recommended Posts

Hi all, and welcome to a topic about our Team's (Railway Video Division) Great Model Railway Challenge - TV Themed Heat Layout, "Go Forth".

The Great Model Railway Challenge has certainly been the talking point of not just modellers, but the general public too. Each week 3 Teams go head to head over the course 24hr, to build model railways, set to a certain theme, with the winner from each week going through to the final.

Our Team the "Railway Video Division", made up of a number follow YouTuber's, Friends, and Family (including my Granddad, who got me started in the Hobby when I was 3) entered Heat 2 of the Challenge, with the Theme - TV Shows. We all quickly came to the conclusion, that 'Blackadder - Goes Forth' would make the perfect theme for our layout, with us all being big fans of the series, plus having an interest in the Railways of the First World War, it seems the perfect pairing!

I think the best way to kick off this topic, is to take a look at a 'Behind the Scenes' video, of our Teams Time on the Show, showing the construction "Go Forth".

Description;

A look Behind the Scenes of our Team (The Railway Video Division) debute on the "The Great Model Railway Challenge", featuring the construction of our "Black Adder" inspired layout, "Go Forth". Joined by fellow YouTubers 82A Studios, Bluebell-Railway Hawks, Northern Soul Express, plus Adrian and my Grandfather, we take a look at our experiences during the filming of Heat 2, where we were tasked with the construction of a layout, based on a 'TV Show' Theme. So stay tuned to see how we get on!

Hope you enjoy!

In this video we discuss what happened to our team's layout after the show, as well as future plans, plus information about a special 'One Day Only' Public Display, at Signals Models Midsomer Norton on November 3rd 2018 (A Full Video with more info on the Show will follow soon)!

Some photos from Day 1 on Set - 21st May 2018

After arriving a Fawley and meeting the Crew, we quickly got onto sorting our main goals on what we wanted to get done on the layout by the end of day 1, and ser each other tasks.

Once we had settled we got cracking with laying of the track, ballasting, getting the hill forms in place, Backscenes Painted and fitted, plus starting to get the mud down (PVA and Woodfiller mix).

Me, Adam and Will set about sorting the track and wiring for the layout, while my Grandfather, John, painted and fitted the Backscenes, give our layout the Go Forth vibe with Blue to Grey Skys.

Callum (other Callum) and Adi, set up shop building the many card and plastic building kits that made up the Manor, Farm and Field Hospital Scene. Callum, who had never built a Kit before, was like a Duck to water and by mid-afternoon had turned out 6 Metcalfe Nissan Huts!

By the end of the day, the layout was starting to look very much like our plan! Naturally it was off to a Pub in Reading where our digs for the night were for a little celebration drink!  ;)

Day 2 on Set - 22nd May 2018

With all the main goals sorted on Day 1, we all set about getting on with the landscaping. This included, adding static grass, trees, bushes, grass tufts, painting the road for the bus, plus making a start on adding the many hand painted figures, that made up a number of our cameo scenes.

Day 2 also saw us test fire our Rail Gun. As you saw in the program, we had a few teething issues at first, but these were soon sorted.

Also managed to get a quick picture of my Grandfather wearing his Station Masters hat which he brought along!  :locomotive:

Day 3 on Set - 23rd May 2018

Day 3, judgment day!

Final touches were added, including the final few figures, vehicles and yard details. Then we set about thoroughly cleaning the tracks and checked everything was working, including all the animations and lighting effects.

Once happy, we then started adding all our rolling stock, including our personalized ROD Locomotives and WDLR Trench Stock.

Here's a good selection of photos taken on the day, showing the layout in closer detail, plus the whole team, and presenter Tim Shaw around the layout, after we heard the result from Judging! :D

As you can imagine, we were all over the moon! Especially me and my Grandfather :)

Tuesday 16th October saw the start of the restoration of the Layout at Signals Model Shop, Midsomer Norton.

Signals who had just moved into their new shop a week or so before the layouts arrival, kindly had a spare room going were the layout could be stored and set-up for a special 'One Day Only' Public Display, to Celebrate their 10th Anniversary of Opening!

After being transported home by in 3 sections, stored in two of our Garages for a few months, then transported in a van once again to Signals, the layout certainly suffered a bit of ware and tare after the filming of the show.

Once safely in at Signals, me and team began the restoration. First step included getting the layout back on it's legs and storing out the wiring, before joining all 3 sections back together. As you can see, there's a mass of mixed wiring under the board, which includes track power and droppers, lighting and smoke generators.

When it came to putting the board back together, we found some of them had twisted, which made things a bit difficult. But with a bit of persuasion and a hammer, all were back together. Next up, that backboards were attached and landscaping moved back into position.

Surprisingly the scenery had held up pretty well, but of course needed some work. The bridges were put back into position and tracks on them connected. We then sort about getting the many animations working again, including the two smoke generators, bunker lights, explosion flashes and rail gun recoil. After a bit of simple wiring, we were amazed that all worked first time!

Here's a few pictures of the progress made over the course of the day.

Saturday 20th October.

Join by fellow team member Callum (Number 2), we set about getting the tracks running and the scenes back into place.

Callum checked images of the layout taken on his phone during the filming of the show, to make sure we got most the items back in their correct locations. This included Tree, Huts, Builds and rubble from the farm house, as well as the odd figure that had come loose.

By the end of the day, the layout started to look a lot like what it did on set!

Very nicely done. Quite inspired.

My only recommendation is the trench. It is far too large (with/height). They were kept narrow to reduce the risk of a shell landing in them (which would have made a mess).

There would have been a ledge for soldiers to stand on, to see over the top, to fire rifles and you need machine gun points which were heavily protected. And there zig zagging runner trenches running behind to bring in supplies, swap out the troops etc.

Big guns were held way back from the front, partly to avoid detection and partly because they could shoot a long way anyway.

Thanks for the tips. Of course this was all built in 24 for the GMRC so we had to improvise.
