RMweb Gold Popular Post Gilbert Posted October 23, 2018 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted October 23, 2018 I thought it was time to start a topic for my 16mm WDLR layout Gare de Brindille. It will be at Newbury this Saturday. Gare de Brindille is my first attempt at an SM32 layout and is something of an experiment as the locomotives are track powered rather than radio controlled. It is a simple test track laid out as an “Inglenook” or shunting twig and has been built using Peco track. It is designed to allow the operators to play trains by shunting the various WDLR wagons I have built from kits as a result of an increasing interest in the WDLR 100 years on from the First World War. The publication of the “WDLR Album” compiled by Roy C Link and the chance purchase of the Swift Sixteen “Protected Simplex” or “Tin Turtle” at “Tracks to the Trenches” at Apedale in 2015 were major factors in the development of the layout. It contains a number of scenic elements typical of the World War 1 narrow gauge railways and very loosely represents a small loading point some way behind the trenches. The layout is run with an NCE DCC system and the locomotives are sound chipped with Zimo decoders from Digitrains. They represent the small petrol engine locomotives typical of the era and are built from kits by Swift Sixteen and PDF models. The wagons are kit-built plastic, resin and wooden kits from makers including Swift Sixteen, Andel, Red Star and Slaters. 33

Andy Y
The straw-load and tarpaulin is one of the most pleasing bits of modelling I've seen.
RMweb Gold Gilbert Posted October 26, 2018 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 26, 2018 Some superb modelling of a grim subject. Appreciated. The research has given me a much better knowledge of the whole business not just the trains. I don't think anyone from our generation can conceive of what it must have been like. RMweb Gold Gilbert Posted October 26, 2018 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 26, 2018 The straw-load and tarpaulin is one of the most pleasing bits of modelling I've seen. Andy - Praise indeed - does that count as a handshake!? But seriously - thanks it took a bit of working out and still needs a bit of tweaking! RMweb Gold Gilbert Posted February 4, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 4, 2019 You're very kind but I fear I've fooled you - its really quite a bodge (just carefully photographed) and entirely inaccurate - getting the gun over the brake wheel stand would be a challenge and the F wagon is not quite correct dimensionally but little did I know when I bought it....not so much 3 feet as 3 metres recommended distance for viewing! On the upside I have learnt how to bend Plastruct girders....and I now have the correct drawings for the framework purpose made to fit on two bogies....I'll be using the very nice versions made by Slaters. Chris Chris, you're too modest if I could bodge like you I would be a very happy man! Whilst some aspects might not be 100% prototypical, the overall picture the layout paints is superb and that is the important thing! Hope the upcoming show goes well. Classsix T
Superb modelling. I'm sure the good folk at Apedale would be interested in seeing your work and perhaps extending an invite for one of their events? C6T.

Chris Might the brake standard be removable? The drawing I have for the Warflats that came from BOAR to the UK a few years ago showed a chain-dotted brake standard in the middle of one end. They must have been removable, as they weren't evident on the wagons.
RMweb Gold Gilbert Posted March 20, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 20, 2019 Certainly the replica Gun Carrier at Apedale only had a brakestand on one bogie - which is the way I've built mine. Whether it was built that way or it was removed on the originalversion I don't know. I'm sure I've also seem drawings with a low brakewheel side-on below the top of the bogie....in reality I'm sure there were all sorts of local adaptations.
