Hi everyone,

 

We hope you had a good weekend! Ready for the next livery preview? We think it's time for iconic Black & Tan!

Is black and tan the best livery the As wore? It is certainly one of our favourites, and certainly one of the most popular if pre-orders are anything to go by! Here we have A15 in original condition with the high band black and tan livery.

007 Reporting For Duty!

Today we look at one of those quirky liveries that lasted longer than you might think! In 1987 the IR points logo began appearing following the formation of Irish Rail, with locomotives receiving the branding on existing "SuperTrain" livery. The A's in particular received this treatment in great numbers from 1987, and some were still carrying it into 1993!

This livery has not been done RTR before, and we are offering two locos in this guise; 007 as seen here and 056!

There are some decoration corrections required on this one, namely the black chevron at the front not extending far enough up onto the cab roof, and that IR logo on the side is too big. Both will be corrected before production!

I am sure we would all like Accurascale/IRM to model the 201 / C-Class that is also included in the line-up ;)

The bogie detail looks superb - refreshing to see what appear to be true-to-scale bogie steps - something that most manufacturers seem unable or/and reluctant to do.   Nice detailing too on the underside between the bogies.  Superb stuff.

I would have hoped the good lads have it bubbling under in the big pot of plans, after the 80class  and Hunslet projects. ....

Happy Friday, everyone! The last of our decorated samples for view are a smorgasbord of painted bodies the factory sent to us, showing some additional liveries for sign off. Some of these are different numbers on the same livery like A30 and 054, but we also get the see the gorgeous lined green and utilitarian plain black liveries of the 1960s!

 

The odd snail is missing here, and tweak is needed there, but we're well on course.

 

We hope you enjoyed this daily reveal and our findings are being conveyed to the factory next week. After that we can move onto production! We will also have a preview of A Class sound coming up in the coming weeks, so keep an eye out for that!

Well the whole roof lift off is very realistic I am sure Tara Junction will have one stopped for repairs quickly!   I guess that will be the tool free way of adding dcc/sound/ somke!  

I think many are looking forward to the A - "A great place to start" and no doubt clamouring for C class will be high. 

 

At least I can save up for the next project - 80 class ?

That led me to have a look at the Wikipedia entry for the class. Unlike the Irish units, which were re-engined and the BR units, which were withdrawn, they retained their Crossley engines and continued in use. Wikipedia states that 600 design flaws had to be dealt with, which makes the Class 60 shine in comparison! All credit to Western Australia Government Railways.

Hi everyone,

 

Our A Class loco project continues to progress (as you can see here in our latest update) but one area we have been working hard on behind the scenes is the sound project with our friends at ESU.

 

We can now give you a first preview of our new ESU Loksound 5 A Class sound chip featuring the distinctive and unique sounds of these iconic Irish locomotives. Featuring real sounds recorded from the ITG's preserved A39r by professional sound engineers played through two high quality speakers, the roar of the rebuilt A Class can soon be enjoyed on your layout!

 

The sound is still being tweaked but this preview below will give you a taste of things to come!

 

 

Please note that this video was recorded on a mobile phone, and in person the sound is much more crisp and bassy. As you can see below, there is a comprehensive list of functions on this chip, giving modellers a whole host of operational possibilities.

Of course, the A Class used two engines during its career, with this sound chip featuring he rebuilt EMD 645 rootes blown engine the locomotives were rebuilt with at Inchicore. This is suitable for the following locomotives in our A Class release programme:

  • 017
  • 018
  • A23R
  • 027
  • 036
  • A39R
  • 048
  • 054
  • 056

The earlier Crossley engine is a rare beast, with very few lasting in service and no sound recordings good enough to use. However, there is a similar Metropolitan Vickers locomotive preserved in Australia which features the Crossley power unit. It is our intention to have ESU record this locomotive, but efforts so far has been hampered by wild bush fires and of course the COVID pandemic. Once the pandemic restrictions ease we will get this locomotive recorded and offer the Crossley sound chip at a later date. We will also be offering standard DCC non-sound chips soon, so keep an eye out for that!

 

In the meantime, you can pre-order your GM-EMD sound chip which will arrive in stock with the locomotives in May 2021. Each A Class model will come pre-fitted with a twin speaker set up, as well as an ESU power pack, so all you need to do is plug in the chip and you can enjoy that glorious A Class soundtrack.

That is so good to read and hear. Like the look of that function list especially the inclusion of F5-Drive hold, F6-Load/Shunting, F8-Brakes. All too often new sound projects focus exclusively on sound only, to the detriment of prototypical driving features that simulate acceleration of heavy trains, coasting and scale like braking, etc. Presume these will be ESU LokSound V5 decoders which have ESU's new 'Full Throttle' driving features. Unfortunately another manufacturers recent ESU decoder completely lacked any of ESU's prototypical driving features, not even drive hold was included, so it is great to see the IRM decoder project for this A class will have driving functions making full use of ESU's full throttle capability.  Simulating a heavy train starting off with slow accelataion, and thrashing, like wise coasting along for some good distance after throttle reduced to zero, requiring brake function to bring a train to a stop at a signal or station platform really adds to the prototypical enjoyment of driving a sound enabled model loco. Apologies for the long winded point, but its a passion of mine and it was unfortunate to see other suppliers recently miss the whole point about prototypical driving features that these new LokSound V5 decoders facilitate but only if programmed as part of the sound project. Independent decoder developers such as Keith and Neil really make use of these prototypical driving features.
