Points in Sidings

Hi

 

There is a pic' somewhere of a worker in Writhlington Sidings

holding an old rag, maybe for operating brakes - but also point

levers?.

 

From when were the siding points rod operated from the Box,

or has that always been the situation.

It depends upon what you mean by 'siding points' :-)

 

The points which lay in the Up or Down main lines and lead into the sidings, along with their associated trap-points, would always have been operated by mechanical rodding from the signal-box. All the other points within the sidings would have been worked by local hand-levers.

The "Trap" points I interpret as the Catch Points on the incline, within the Colliery Gates,

and on "Private Property"

 

By Sidings, I refer to the Main Sidings alongside the Mainline - how far in were these

Lever thrown.

By trap points, I mean those points at the exit from the sidings which protected the main running line - in other words, those worked by levers 5 and 7 - that's all.
