Results - The Wishlist Poll 2018

Another successful online event - well done team, and particularly Brian for his usual patience in the face of some demanding requests and suggestions.

I find the overall result to be interesting. Although not a GWR/WR person, the Manor is exactly the sort of loco that should be a winner. It is ubiquitous within its region, and ideal power for the smaller layouts most of us can hope to build, while having the twin appeal of 6 driving wheels and names. Some of the other high-pollers are less easy to understand. One-offs like Bulleid’s Leader, which never really did much or went very far, the Lickey Banker, or indeed 89001, are from very specific locales and so should have limited appeal as layout locos. The Collector may have influenced the vote here. Then there is the Southern Z Class, a small class but successful in its design - yet only ever used at a very small number of locations, and seldom much beyond station limits. Again, a very narrow range of layouts would be a natural home. As I said, interesting.

The Industrial issue is a thorny one. Without doubt demand exists, and recent releases have been both well-received and highly regarded. But unless those who know about the wide range of varied manufacturers and models, many with customised variations, can draw the poll “offer” together, it will remain unviable. I am aware that genuine efforts are being made to achieve this.

Once again, thanks to the Poll Team for a fine exercise.

No problem, Phil - it was an opportunity for me to say what we do with the Press Releases.

Sadly, your D15 has sat around the middle of the Low Polling segment since inception. I, personally, would love a couple of E1Rs, but they have also sat in Low Polling, although they only missed getting into Middle Polling by two votes this year. I live in hope!

Brian (on behalf of The Poll Team, except where noted)

I'm also waiting for the E1/R ... if someone makes an RTR version, I shall be buying at least 4.

I'm modelling the North Devon line in the mid-1930s, and it can't be done properly without a fleet of E1/R locos.

I wonder what the economic minimum sales quantity is for an RTR loco?

Hello Caradoc (#23) and Stephen (#25)

Firstly, thanks to Stephen - tongue-in-cheek noted and accepted.

The Poll purpose is for modellers and collectors to indicate their wishes. How many of each voted for Big Bertha will remain unknown (we don't collect any additional data as to who was a modeller or collector as we prefer to keep the voting as simple as possible).

Big Bertha has been The Most Wanted LMS Loco since 2014 and was in The Top 50 in 2016 as well as this year. (Personally, I voted for one as I could genuinely run it, albeit not on prototype full length trains but not unduly compressed ones either.)

You are certainly right about the preference for Period III stock - although within Middle Polling we can find Period I, Period II, Caledonian and LNWR types. However, the High Polling locos seem to show a fair mix. But you are right that constituents tail off towards the bottom.

Hello everyone

Advance Notice

I keep meaning to say that we will have another table of results for you pretty soon after Warley.

It will be entitled: Results - The 00 Wishlist Poll 2013-2018 - Items Announced and/or Made (as at xx.11.18)

This will give a complete overview of all that is promised and/or already made from the five years of results (noting we didn't run in 2017). We are holding fire until after Warley as we hope there may be a few more items to add. We are sure you will find it more interesting reading than it may initially sound!

Many thanks Brian, Andy and all of the Poll Team for all the hard work that you all have out into this poll.

Hope the manufacturers and those that commission models will use this information and provide us all with models we love.

  Thanks again,

     Chris

Brian & team thanks for another year of the poll, well done.

The interesting thing is how 'oddballs' have crept near to the top of the field presumably reflecting that either most more useful subjects have been covered (which seems unlikely) or that there is a solid group of folk to whom an oddball (such as the Leader) appeals simply because it is an oddball.  I wonder what influence this sort of voting will have on manufacturers and if it will divert their attention from more' bread & butter' high scorers such as the long overdue Class 120 dmus?  For example some of us might have a 'fluffy liking for a gas turbine 18000 but given a choice between that and a Class 120 set I know where many would put their money as the dmu would be far more useful and typical.

One point which perhaps still needs to be addressed in your categories is the very thorny one of GWR Toplight stock.  In some other areas you have gradually been able to refine the list, especially wagons and NPCCS, but the Toplights now stand out like a sore thumb because they can mean so many different things to different people as an earlier poll conducted in a thread devoted to the subject very clearly showed where the choice of those who voted could at best be described as 'varied' or at worst as 'balkanised'.  A difficult area to address I fully realise but I do think at present the lumping together of so many different vehicles could be misleading.

I'm looking forward to those 277 layouts based on the Lickey Incline

Apologies for the tongue-in-cheekiness. It's an entertaining exercise so thanks to those who run it!

Closely followed by the LNER U1, strange choices as both banking engines !!. Hush Hush in the original form for me , no brainer for Hornby to do !!!!

.

I must admit to not understanding most of the most "popular" of the results, both for the overall but especially for the Southern  -  a very peculiar selection still a poll is a poll.

The South Eastern has the same problem with its 4-4-0s that the Eastern had with its 0-6-0s a few years back, namely there are too many and no one type ever seems to come out on top.

Slowly the D class has risen into view but still short of its true potential. Meanwhile the L and L1 drag each other down and the D1/E1 ensures neither gets anywhere.

Disappointing.

Brian and Team, plus Andy Y,

Thank you all again for your hard work, and thank you Brian for coming to the Pre-Grouping Corner to encourage us to vote.  I therefore take it that you must have done so in other specialist areas which must say something for your dedication.

There are 4 Pre-Group companies that have polled well in the Goods Wagon section but we shall have to see if they are produced as pre 1895.  (The NBR mineral wagon is I think the only pre 1895 wagon available RTR at present.)  The Dean Clerestory did well so maybe, just maybe the cutting up of old Triang coaches will be a thing of the past.  No Dean Four Wheelers so Ratio and Shire Scenes are still in business.

Thank you all again, it is appreciated.

Hello Mike

Many thanks for the kind comments.

As we say in our Purpose, the Poll is for modellers and collectors to indicate which models they would like to see made. We can only hope this matches with their own market research - if it doesn't, or they feel there are too many difficulties, then we won't ever see them made.

As noted, many items have been deleted over the years (having been announced) so that leaves 'high level gaps' to fill. Here are some examples:

1. Great Bear has aways been High Polling and has made The Top 50 this year.

2. Bulleid Leader was always High Polling and has been Top 50 since 2015.

3. Noted earlier but repeated here for completeness, 'Big Bertha' has been High Polling and made it into The Top 50 in 2016.

4. 'Hush Hush' was always High and has become Top 50 this year.

5. P2 Streamlined was listed from 2014. Went in High and became Top 50 this year.

6. The U1 was Middle of Middle in 2013, 2014 and 2015 but got into High in 2016 and climbed higher in 2018.

7. The USATC S-160 was High in 2013 and became Top 50 from 2014.

8. GT3 has always been High and made Top 50 this year (perhaps her profile has increased since the crowd-funding proposal?)

9. 18000 has always been High; it made Top 50 in 2014 but dropped out for 2015 and 2016; but has come back in for 2018.

10. And finally (phew!) Class 120 - not being an oddball - has been Top 50 highest-voted DMU consistently since 2013.

The point is taken about Toplights and we will look into that matter. In the meantime, I have appended relevant extracts from The Guide. The Team is fortunate to have GWR coach author, John Lewis, in its ranks - so we'll see if we can get it better. But I can feel a headache coming on (!).

Brian (on behalf of The 00 Poll Team)

Extracts only from The Guide 2018

It is impossible for us to take into account the vast array of variations within stock over the years such as refurbishments, plating over and liveries. The manufacturers will ‘get as much as they can’ from any model via the use of slip tools and so on. It seems to make commercial sense for them to produce models which span a number of decades and which appeal to a wide audience, Bachmann’s new Bulleid range being a case in point.

GWR Churchward Toplight Coaches (1907-1922)

These were built in 56ft, 57ft and 70ft lengths with a wide range of trusses and panelling. They lasted well into BR days and some have been preserved on the Severn Valley Railway, the West Somerset Railway and at Great Western Society at Didcot.

The Toplight vehicles were altered considerably over the years, which would make the choice for a manufacturer very difficult. The Poll Team has discussed the matter at length and feels that the following 57ft steel-panelled coaches with rigid angle trusses (and the Diag.K22 Passenger Brake Van in the category Non-passenger-carrying Coaching Stock) would suit most modellers:

  • Diag.D56 – Brake Third (BT)
  • Diag.C35 – Third (T)
  • Diag.E98 or E103 – Composite ( C )

Hello again Mike

The Diag.E98 or E103 Composites in my posting above keep getting a 'copyright symbol' instead of a capital C in parenthesis! Tried to edit but it won't take it. Same happened here!

Brian

PS Now corrected as per suggestion below. Thx.

Hello Phil

Many thanks for the kind comments.

More than 400 Press Releases went out to web groups, clubs and printed magazines around the world this year. Naturally, we can't tell you who published what or whether they reached 'fans' of one railway or region etc more than any other.

I can say, though, from the year-on-year comparison charts that we keep, all categories show a relatively consistent set of positions across the years.

For example, the U was 4th Most Wanted SR Loco in 2013. The higher-polling Adams Radial, S15 and 700 were all subsequently announced. The U is now top-wanted SR Loco.

The Q was 7th Most Wanted. Those mentioned above plus the Marsh Atlantic, H and Air-smooth N were subsequently announced and now the Q is 2nd Most Wanted.

If you want to see the Comparison Table, just ask and I will post here.

Brian (on behalf of The Poll Team)

....and will be announced by ? for 2020 and I still won't have finished my DJH/SEF (thanks DLS for the tip) hybrid  :scared:

Thanks to all those involved in running the Poll.

One surprise for me was the 227 votes for 58100, the Midland's 'Big Bertha'; There must be a lot of Lickey Incline layouts built or at least planned !

Edited to correct my mis-remembering, there were in fact 277 votes for Big Bertha - Even more Lickey Incline layouts than I thought !

I agree but ours is not to question why people would buy any model.

My own eclectic collection of stock has little basis on reality - and by collection, I do not mean models in a show case but rather models for current or proposed layouts.  However we must not discount the number of people who will buy a model as part of a collection (as in not intended for use on a layout).  Manufacturers will not particularly worry about who buys a model, they might  perhaps be more interested in why since it directs their future efforts, but overall a sale is a contribution to the costs and maybe profit irrespective of who and why.

The conversion to the copyright symbol is automatic because the ( C ) (without the blanks) is recognised as an easy way of inputting that symbol. So you want to stop it being recognised as such. Try putting some unimportant control codes in there:

( [ font = undefined ] C [ /font ] ), obviously with no blanks in there, gives (C).

Hello Brian and the rest of The Team,

Another good Poll with some interesting results.

May I make a suggestion for a future poll?  With the re-emergence of interest in 4mm 00-9 Narrow Gauge (helped no doubt by Bachmann's, Heljan's and Peco's recent releases) how about a category for this in future polls?  It may not be 00 but is the same scale and there will be many (myself included) building layouts with both standard and narrow gauge lines.

I'm looking forward to those 277 layouts based on the Lickey Incline! Interesting to see that despite the increasing number of items of earlier date, it's still BR era items that dominate - at least that's how I interpret the overwhelming preference for LMS period III stock over earlier carriages - evidently few respondents are interested in modelling the LMS pre-WWII...

Apologies for the tongue-in-cheekiness. It's an entertaining exercise so thanks to those who run it!

I also noted the preference for later LMS stock, and other than the P3 version the lack of LMS Open stock in the highest polling section. The Period 1 and Period 2 stock was common up to the coming of DMUs and a few examples almost made it to the end of steam, the last Period 1 coaches disappearing in the mid 1960s. The LMS had thousands of Open coaches, but with the exception of the old Replica D1915 example we have never had an RTR model.

Many thanks for writing and for the kind comments.

Below is a clip from our announcement post #2 on page 1 of this thread.

We did investigate running a 009 category and actually got to a very workable draft – however, we have decided to stick to our ‘core content’ in the future.

Hello Zomboid

I have attached the EMU Comparison Table so that you can relate the Class 325 position to all the others. The table may seem 'over-powering' at first as there is a lot of data to convey!

If you perhaps ignore 2013 for this exercise - The Poll was really only just 'getting run-in' at the time - and start with 2014.

You will find Class 325 towards the top. Then you can trace its movement across from left to right. Whilst there are others that go up and down a bit more, you will soon find that with many you can almost draw a straight line across the years. What is high tends to stay high; what is low tends to stay low.

As a contributor on another thread mentioned, we wonder what effect an article in a magazine or a YouTube video might have on the popularity of any item in any one year. We feel that the 'broad brush year-on-year view' gives a better view than any single year's results.

I wondered if there was more potential for manufacturers among EMUs, than among the apparently saturated BR diesel locomotive sector.

I've often wondered why PEP-derived stock hasn't yet appeared: very wide-ranging indeed, with lots of interesting liveries - both mainstream and more niche. 3-car variants (which I guess is more attractive to many than 4-car). And bobbing around towards the very top of the poll for some time now.

Really useful table Brian - thank you again.

Just, perhaps, one change you should make. The Class 414 etc (2HAP) BR has been announced by Bachmann (and EP's are out) so you can yellow highlight that class too.

Interesting results. I continue to be baffled why the Saint always scores so low. Probably the most significant design in UK locomotive development, practically every other design made since then using Churchward principles, surely deserves a quality model. There isn't even a decent kit anymore.

One question if i may. The N15x was included, but why not its original version the L tank? Judging by the kind of locos that score highly I think this could be a popular choice.
