Teaser Alert?

I noticed this this morning but as it hasn't appeared so far I thought I would draw members' attention to Chris' Kernow contribution to Facebook today -

On this day in history - 30th October 1993 (!) - Today being another day with no images, here is another which is particularly appropriate - Class 319/1 4 Car EMU number 319 015 departs Guildford with the 1228 departure to Luton in multiple with 319 184. Further hints may appear leading up to the actual announcement!

<a href="https://christrerise.smugmug.com/…/Railway-Phot…/i-HT3Sfdx/A"><img src="https://photos.smugmug.com/…/i-HT3S…/0/0568b38f/L/1590-L.jpg" alt=""></a>

Why is it appropriate? When are the further hints going to appear? Chris is pretty good with his teases so it should be an interesting week and I for one look forward to finding out at Warley whether there is a new announcement, and what it might be or whether I have been led up the garden path and I have fallen hook line and sinker into the mug pool!

Make what you may of it!

all the best
Godfrey

It would be a versatile EMU to make.

I have a memory of travelling from Euston to MK in around 2001 & being surprised that a 319 took me there, so you could get away with it on MML, WCML as well as many parts of the southern region.

& they have run regularly on WCML since the 321s have been re-assigned elsewhere.

Kernow post a photo on a daily basis, sometimes more on their Facebook page so I would not see this as a teaser.

Yes but this post specifically says “Further hints may appear leading up to the actual announcement!”

And if you make the under frame mould versatile enough, it will soon be seen across many parts of England & Wales as a 769.

Don’t forget the AC 319s now work across the North West and will soon begin on the GWML to replace 387s going on HEX

I had hoped that the Farish 319 would be scaled up and also that the RevolutioN 321 gets scaled up too.

Bachmann have announced an N gauge Class 319 and I know Chris used to work at Thameslink, so hopefully Kernow will be funding an OO version.

But equally why would Kernow fund, as so take on the financial risk, of a Class 319 in OO when Bachmann would almost certainly be doing it anyway as a standard release at some point, because a lot of the work will have been done on the N gauge model and the costs can be defrayed over both.

I'll wager that hardly any work has been done on the N gauge one given it continues to languish right at the bottom of any sort of progress lists, and if Chris can agree a tie-up with Bachmann and get a cut of what he sees a good opportunity then why wouldn't he? He's not doing things for altruistic reasons.

The bigger question is why would Bachmann want to share a slice of that cake? If, indeed, it is the 319!

Kernow have worked with Bachmann many times before. The last being the 4-TC. So maybe another tie up if its a 319.

But would Bachmann?

Both Bachmann and Hornby seem to be hesitant to do any DMU/EMU with more than 2 vehicles in the consist, maybe 3, but there is a distinct shortage of units that are 4 cars in length.

The afore-mentioned 4TC plus the 4CEP, 4VEP & 4BEP  ....... yes there are plenty more to do some day : I'm sure someone suggested Hornby could / should do a 4COR f'rinstance ......................

True, but since Bachmann has already announced a 4-car EMU (Class 319) in N gauge, also making it in OO at a later date would help defray the development costs over both gauge models.

I'm not convinced Kernow involvement in an OO gauge version would speed things up either. Bachmann will be putting together the R&D package that will be the basis for China to produce the CAD. This takes as long as it takes. Yes, China could then prepare CADs in both N and OO gauge concurrently, but it seems they're still some way off reaching that stage.

I'm not sure there is very much in the way of significant savings.

The biggest expense is tooling, which obviously can't be shared.

CAD might have potential, though even there it might not be as much as one would think given the changes necessary - it might be easier to start from scratch or at the very least from the very early stages of the N CAD

When they announced the 4-TC, they already had the EPs. Kernow seem to have stopped announcing things until a certain stage has been reached now.

Almost All of Bachmann's retailer exclusive models recently have been of the exclusive period release type. So retailers get an exclusive period and first produce models after this period the models appear in the main Bachmann range, recent examples are the Mk1 Horse box for TMC and Locomotion's LNER Atlantic both of which have arrived as standard releases.

If Bachmann are planning to upscale the 319  then its possible a deal has been done with Kernow for a similar agreement and both parties win as Kernow get exclusive first sales and Bachmann get finance to develop the model, guaranteed sales and then the model reverts to the Bachmann range in the future.

Given the extended timescales to which some models have been subject, typically due to matters outside Kernow’s direct influence, and the negative press this has incurred, not least on RMweb, they can hardly be blamed for retracting their horns a smidgen.

Although this week's newsletter says 'a couple of items'.  of course they needn't be a loco or rolling stock.
