RMweb Gold chuffinghell Posted December 3, 2018 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted December 3, 2018 (edited) Whilst I wait for bits to arrive to allow me to continue with my Barclay bash I’ve turned my attention back to my suburban coaches. Bogies disassembled, tie rods added and painted Edited December 3, 2018 by chuffinghell
RMweb Gold chuffinghell Posted December 8, 2018 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted December 8, 2018 (edited) Had my transfers from Railtec Warren is (will be) the name of my layout, a fictional designation loosely based on GWR branch line I have to say that Railtec Transfers are second to none This is just a practice run on a spare body, I’ll possibly look into getting the lettering a little smaller, although I quite like it as it is.....rule #1 Edited December 8, 2018 by chuffinghell
george stein
chuffinghell: Very nice work. Inspiring to turn a basic coach into something nice. Couple questions: (1) "new Bachmann couplers" ??? what kind and how attached to the bogies? (2) Bachmann coach wheels?? (3) Source for buffers? [they look like thumb tacks.]. Finally, various releases of the coach have alternated between dark grey vs. white coach roof. Were these period specific? Thanks George North Carolina

Finally, various releases of the coach have alternated between dark grey vs. white coach roof. Were these period specific? Thanks George North Carolina Thank you 1) The modifications to Bachmann couplings were done following member 'Silver Sidelines' blog thus:- http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/blog/880/entry-8615-siphons-and-mini-couplings/ 2) Wheels are Hornby 14.1mm dia metal wheels instead of the original plastic type (direct replacement) https://www.Hornby.com/uk-en/14-1mm-2-hole-wheels.html 3) Buffers are Hornby spares, reference X9568 https://www.Hornby.com/uk-en/sea_cow_buffers_pack.html 4) The roofs were originally white but they had deep scratches that I had to fill and sand. As far as the colour goes it was a combination of personal choice and the fact that I only had a can of grey plastic bumper spray in the shed. george stein
Very helpful comments, especially the bogie improvements and the shorter couplings. Thanks George North Carolina
george stein
One final question. Looking at the B-set I have, I'm not sure they have the right kind of bogies!!! What are the bogies you're using in the article? Source ?? if I have the wrong ones. Thanks George North Carolina
RMweb Gold chuffinghell Posted December 13, 2018 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted December 13, 2018 (edited) The bogies are those fitted as standard by Airfix/Hornby, do you have a photo of the bogies fitted to your B set? Found some on eBay https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F202504854520 Edited December 13, 2018 by chuffinghell
george stein
Checking various fora it seems Hornby released a version with the wrong bogies. Got mine off ebay, so dude was unloading Hornby's error. Will get the right bogies. Again, thanks for the helpful info. George North Carolina
RMweb Gold Joseph_Pestell Posted December 14, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 14, 2018 This is definitely going too far....you can only see it with a flash on the camera I disagree. Not toof far at all. Painting the upholstery the right colour makes a big difference to the look of any model carriage.

RMweb Gold rhnrhn Posted December 15, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 15, 2018 I’m tempted to populate the coaches with passengers while I’ve got the bodies off Super work, has inspired me to do somethin with my B's. Seeing as the bodies are off have you considered installing light bars too, to show of the upholstery and passengers?

Got mine off ebay, so dude was unloading Hornby's error. Will get the right bogies. Again, thanks for the helpful info. There was a batch built in 1933 to dia.E145 with 9ft plate bogies (like the type Airfix used under most of their other GWR coaches and Siphons). The bodywork was identical to the E141 design by Airfix/Hornby.

Thank you, it’s usually others that inspire me so it’s good to know I’m inspiring others It has been considered although with lightning, particularly at the height its viewed at the inappropriately shiny screws would stick out like a sore thumb Edited December 15, 2018 by chuffinghell
RMweb Gold chuffinghell Posted December 18, 2018 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted December 18, 2018 (edited) Smoking/non-smoking signs, one down 35 to go (I’ll save that for another evening) WARREN BRANCH Lettering 20% smaller, personally I think this looks better. Not bothered to number them as there is only one pair operating at Warren Also need to paint the window frames on the second coach Many thanks to Steve at Railtec for producing the transfers Edited July 26, 2021 by chuffinghell

RMweb Gold chuffinghell Posted December 20, 2018 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted December 20, 2018 (edited) Adding the smoking and non-smoking signs is a bit of a “jail job” but it doesn’t look too bad Edited December 31, 2018 by chuffinghell
RMweb Gold chuffinghell Posted December 31, 2018 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted December 31, 2018 (edited) One coach finally finished with smoking/non-smoking signs to both sides and passengers also added I’ve added a partition in the guards compartment to stop the light passing through and in turn darken up that area, seems to work quite effectively once the body is back on the chassis I had to redo the bogies as the tie rods came off, liquid poly was the wrong choice of adhesive, however I’ve redone them with superglue and that’s holding just fine (withstands my clumsy handling) Edited December 31, 2018 by chuffinghell
Guest teacupteacup
This is the type of modelling I like. Some people can be too quick to write-off older models, but your work proves that a bit of tlc and patience can work wonders! Great job!

RMweb Gold chuffinghell Posted January 7, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 7, 2019 (edited) The pair are now finally completed, so that’s another project crossed off the list....next stop TMC for weathering (yes I’m still too chicken to have a go myself!) RedGemAlchemist
Very nice indeed, Chuffing! Little jealous actually at how much better they look than the slightly rickety looking blood and custards on my own layout.
