Andrew P
I always found the DCC27 from Gaugemaster one of the sweetest running Chips and with no Motor buzz on Bachmann Hornby and also Heljan.
BWsTrains
likewise I've never had troubles with the various DCC Concepts chips, having installed several now in my Hornby and Bachmann locos. They support a range of CVs which some basic devices don't (may be relevant later), details on their website. If he does get the DCC Concepts chips, the Stay-alive that comes with them doesn't do much, it's a small capacitor and can be omitted for simplicity's sake or included if desired. Paul80
For price alone it's worth giving the Laisdcc decoder a go and at just under £10 it's difficult to fault them. Also with a look is the Zimo MX638D for £20.

As my latin teacher said many eons ago, "when all else fails, read the instructions" take 2: sorry that was my Engineering Drawing Teacher, Latin Teacher's favorite was "when in doubt, leave it out!"
