People were asking about formations. Here's a small relaying job at Strood from 1984. My notes say loco 73113, tamper DX 73249, crane DRP 81607 (but I suspect that's a typo/misreading of 81507, as that seems to have been an SR-based one that I also noted around there that year).

A small but interesting selection of wagons, Seacows, Sturgeon and Salmon I think.

‘Sturgeon and Salmon’, I thought RMweb was ment to be free of politics.

Meanwhile, going back to the allocations in my earlier post, I just noticed all the Plasser ones are allocated "south of Yorkshire".

Looking back in the Track Machines book, the Cowans Sheldon ones ordered at the same time as the Plasser ones were all allocated to places in Yorkshire and further north, apart from one at Ipswich.

I wonder if that was for maintenance reasons, with Cowans Sheldon being in Carlisle and Plasser und Theurer having a base in Ealing.

They seem to have been a regular team. Here they are at Reading in 1986, sandwiched between a 47 and a brake van.

Nice short modellable train.

GPC crane 81509 with the 'tube' and converted 'Pasfruit D' at Yeoveney heading south with Staines branch track lifting train in 1981. This area now under M25. (CJL)

A couple more. I have a model of this train including the Plasser GPC (scratch-built). Mine is powered, using a Tenshodo SPUD and has a posable, extending jib. (CJL)

Yes, that's interesting and it has maybe informed my decision not to buy one now. I model Manchester region, late 70s/early 80s and ScR region, same period and I'm guessing these cranes wouldn't have been seen in those parts.

Can anyone confirm this? - that these are southern only?

Well certainly in their earlier years they were all allocated Midlands and southwards, according to the listing I posted earlier in this thread. Couldn't say about later in their careers, as they may have been reallocated. Anyone have any more obscure stock books from later years? Would departmentals.com or a similar site be able to come up with sightings/allocations?

Hi Daddyman,

The original intention was that they would be for use in Southern regions but they ended up going all around the country as needed.

Whilst cranes may have been allocated to certain depots they would often be sent far out of the area for jobs.

The very useful ontrackplant website has photos of cranes in a variety of locations

81512 + 81527 at Skipton

81515 in Newcastle

81523 at Bromsgrove

I hope this helps.

Cheers,

Dave

Would make for an interesting train - the tube wagon from bachy as well as the CAR, the fruit D from Dapol ( which usefully seems to come as an unpainted option ) .

did they lose the BR arrows in 1990 then ? Seems from the timescales they may have.

I really like the look of the white Balfour Beatty cranes, but from what I can gather they are mostly used in the South of England. I was searching high and low for an example of one in use in the North and eventually realised that the image Hattons are using is actually at Healey Mills (Wakefield) which is where my layout will be based – happy days!

I don't think I've found any other examples so must have been a rare trip to these parts, but that justifies it for me! Will pre-order closer to the time :D

Masses of observations of all of the cranes on http://www.ontrackplant.com/

Widely used although seeing it in Leeds and HM appears for only a short while. Appears to have been stuck in Ashford OTPD for many years - still extant. These are, of course, elderly, 40 years is a good age for any rolling stock.

Hi guys,

We have now produced fresh artwork for the GPC project. We have been working to ensure that the model will be as accurate as possible - which means that we have changed the release date to allow more time for development. We are now expecting the models to arrive during Q1 2021.

CAD images are expected within the next month. We will provide further updates as soon as they are available. Below is a selection of some of the new livery images - head over to our site to see them all.

I'm going to get really, really anal here.

The box on the rear half of of the jib is a radius measurement component, and these were changed from the original Ekco SLI, so to absolutely precise, the version in original livery isn't correct, it should have the original Ekco radius box on the jib, which is a more square shape as shown on the photo below just underneath the mechanical radius indicator.

Clarke Chapman designed their 12t GPs and TJCs then built them, so they are all the same. Plasser on the other hand appeared to build one, tweak it a bit for subsequent builds until they settled on DRP 81507. Subsequent builds are the same as 81507, previous builds all differ slightly. The original build Plasser GPCs retained the original Rexroth Hydraulic Model and Serial Numbers on the pumps and motors, so I took the details so that they could be repaired by Rexroth dealers. When Plasser got wind of it, threats ensued, so we stopped sending stuff to Rexroth dealers and sent them to Plassers. I wonder what happened to the costs........

Isn't the photograph above one of the Cowans Sheldon cranes, whereas Hattons are producing the Plasser Theurer version?  I'm no expert on these, but I'm certainly looking forward to these even if i have to wait until 2021.

Dave,

See my post above re the Ekco radius indicator box as fitted to the original cranes. It was a square box fitted to the jib, same size and shape as that fitted to the 75t crane.

image.png.24e2040a7fbf3a2f43e21387314bee61.png

The box on the rhs of the jib on your CAD is the new type which isn;t quite correct for the first build in BR colours.
