Accurascale Class 55 Deltic - 4mm scale

Recommended Posts

We have to be careful how we percieve the model to the real thing. On a model, you can stick the thing in nose to nose, in front of your nose and see pretty much both sides at once. On the real thing you can only ever see one side, no matter how far the loco is away from you and this can distort perception of shape when trying to compare them.

The closest you will get is looking at both with one eye, but even here it needs to be placed at scale height and distance to have some hope of the same perception as the real thing. Your mind can imagine all sorts of things when looking at photos. Optical illusions are far too easy especially with complex shapes and angles.

For example, you might think the guns in this photo are elevated at 60 degrees: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BL_16-inch_Mk_I_naval_gun#/media/File:HMSRodneyGunsElevated1940.jpg

But the turret could only do 40 degrees!

It would be all too easy for any of us to come here and say the shape is wrong.

Sounds like a rerun of the Heljan Western saga - and I still have half a dozen Heljan models and none from Dapol.

I'm happy enough with the 3 Bachmann Deltics in my collection. Good luck with the model though and I hope it leads into many new models

I have two or three or is it five or six Bachmann Deltics. Super powerful models that go on and on, and to my ancient eyes quite like the ones that I watched in 1962.  Six times £160 is around £1k,  I still have to be persuaded.

Cheers

I had actually discounted this possibility due to the teaser of a scaly air pipe!

I notice the DPS locos are missing from the list. Special editions via the society perhaps?

Well this took me by surprise and with hindsight it shouldn't have. I'd only last week looked at two of my Bachmann deltics on my modelling shelf and thought, these are well due a retool.

Having seen the EP for the CIE A/001 class recently released my expectations of the first U.K. Loco from Accurascale was very high, and what an excellent choice. The images produced so far look extremely promising, and an order from me is virtually guaranteed.

For me growing up and being spoilt with a daily dose of WR hydraulics, Deltics were extremely iconic as they were to a lot of us and still are. When I started spotting in 1973/4, the first major objective was to see one. At the tender age of 12 in August 1974 me and a friend were dropped off at Euston by his father whilst he was on business. Despite being told not to stray from the station I was adamant we must pay King's cross a visit to see a "Delly". Being only really a kid, we failed to navigate the short distance and spent the day collecting AC electric numbers. My friend was also very keen to heed his fathers instructions, which I was happy to ignore, "King's cross is only another 100 yards away I think " I said as my friend was panicking outside St Pancras, begging me to return to Euston which sadly we did. The next month, on my first trip to York shortly after arriving, 55 019 appeared in the distance on a Northbound train. I was awe struck, and the sight and sound of a Deltic still brings back those early powerful memories. By 1976 I'd seen all of them, and particularly imprinted on the memory is Meld on what sounded like full chat powering through Peterborough on a non stopper whilst we were waiting for a class 105 to March. I always get off my backside and go lineside when 55022 makes it on a raltour to Bristol.

I'm delighted to see Brian Hansons involvement in the project, and I've a few Shawplan Deltic components in my parts box waiting to upgrade Bachmann models which were on the to do list. Despite the wide choice of available models, mine will be 55019 in 1974 condition, so a renumber will be necessary complete with a 1S headcode.

Many congratulations to Accurascale and thanks for giving a middle age bloke a chance to rekindle some happy memories from my youth,

Neil

You could do what I did with my Duchesses when Hornby did their latest run. I kept the previous version but supplemented them with a version not seen before (in this case the Ivatt version).

I personally won't dispose my Bachmann Deltic, its a good solid runner with lots of life left but I have been thinking about getting a second Deltic for a while now and this is a great chance.

(Edit: well I do do primarily southern so Duchesses and Deltics were extremely rare!)

Presuming the surveying was done by scanning, I wonder whether the data was tidied up to make the underframe sidesills straight. Even when relatively new, some photos show something of a sag between the bogies, which would only have increased over a hard-worked life. Presumably the framing continued the gradient outboard of the bogies, pointing the cabs slightly skywards.

Perhaps this real-world deviation from the EE designers' intent contributed to the controversy over the bonnet top slope on the Bachmann model.

The Nim.

PS: I see no mention of buffers. These changed over the life of the locos, originally being Turton-Platt types, which were slimmer. This was reflected in the 'cuff' panels covering their bases.

The frames did stay relatively straight but some issues were made worse when the locos were reskinned in preservation. 55019 has an approximate 100mm sag in the centre due to the reskinning being done without correct ballasting being in place in the engine room. The problem could be overcome by reskinning again as the issue may be a factor if mainline running was considered again due to gauge limits. I’m just pleased they didn’t scan 19 it would have needed tweaking lol.

Got an email from Accurascale saying "we're getting your order ready to be shipped" ... which is nice to hear. Doubt it somehow though ....

More seriously, though, what happens with the "bank deposit" option? I expected to be asked to pay at least the £30 deposit and to have to set up some sort of standing order, but nothing. I wasn't asked for bank details or anything.

A little while after ordering you will get confirmation of your order with an invoice, and details of Bank and Paypal details. Just then pop a deposit to us, using your order ID as a reference. Once that payment lands with us, you'll receive a further confirmation and receipt.

You can make periodic payments as you wish over the coming months, and receive an update / receipt each time, or indeed wait until the models are ready to ship and pay up at that point.

Many thanks for the support!

PS: just to add that if you would like to pay the deposit by Card, just drop us a line and we'll send you a link for just the deposit amount to secure your order.

Earlier in the thread someone mentioned 2R curves. Should a locomotive of such quality be expected to navigate such tight curves? Recognise that a balance has to be struck - most of us have some sort of space restriction - but maybe there is a case for a different minimum with a high fidelity product?

Ahh, was expecting a new Deltic from across the water, admittedly thought that'd be the Atlantic though.

Looks very nice indeed and sorely tempted by 16 in purple being the first Deltic I can remember seeing.

Wild Boar Fell

Me too. I was expecting a Canadian company to do this as there first general UK release and a class 11 (in WD colours for me) from Accurascale.

But I'm sure an Accurascale "Royal Scots Grey" will look perfect pulling a mark 2 aircon rake or even a cement train on my southern layout!

Yep, a very good approach. My first reaction was, “Oh.”  :( I had been hoping for something which hadn’t been done before. I have two Deltics: one Bachmann and one Lima and they shan’t be replaced. However, I am slowly warming to the idea and I might get an Accurascale job. If I do and I like it, I might get another. It will keep me occupied until some nice person decides to produce, oh, say 18000?

By the way, to all the nice manufacturers whose sole purpose is to spend hundreds of thousands sterling solely to satisfy my wants: If you do decide that a newly tooled 47 would be a good idea, please include a slide for a Class 48 roof.

Quick question, is it possible to get a list of which of the Blue models will have which Headcodes e.g. 9021 will presumably Alpha numeric but what about the TOPS ones please?

The detailed descriptions against each model in the Accurascale website will give you what you desire.

Perhaps you can produce a list here for anyone else that might be interested??

I’m suprised and delighted, but wonder if there could be an extra option? Mine will have to be a blue 55010, cab side windows present and no white window surrounds. Do I wait and see if that comes out later or do I buy one and renumber/rename it? Or perhaps there could be a option to order one without numbers and names?

I’ve already got two Bachmann blue Tulyars, although not intentionally. I first bought one of the DPS limited edition Tulyars (if anyone is interested in buying it, send me a PM) with the intention of getting sound fitted. Charlie at DC Kits suggested getting one of the later deltics instead and he could arrange for it to be renamed Tulyar, weathered and fitted with the supersound option which involves modifying the chassis. I took up his suggestion and it looks good (except I forgot to ask about removing the horrible white cab window surrounds) and really does sound like a deltic. Running it on a friends loft layout the delitc sound was echoing round the room - brilliant, just like I remember hearing them running along the clifftops at Berwick-upon-Tweed. If the new model sounds as good as mine, the price of the Accurascale sound fitted version is a bargain.

I'm not confident that the preservation era paint job on D9009 is necessarily correct. The yellow panel is way too narrow; the vertical line should run through the taillights not inboard of them. Apart from the yellow panel the livery may be correct but I'd check with another example.

Luke

The current yellow panel will have to meet modern regs for running on the national network. There were at least four different type of small yellow panel (inculding width) - see Deltic De Mythology by Ian Strange for details.

given the level of detail that's being put into the inside of the loco with good relief renderings of the twin Napiers and other equipment its good to see that engine room lighting has been added to the spec list I see.......more of this please on diesel and electric locos with side windows.

with its generous 6 side windows the effect should be impressive in darker conditions...….
