From Rails, I live in Sheff so was able to collect. They were still sorting out pre-orders. Excellent service and they even checked that all the handrails were OK without me prompting them.

I’ve just got an 86426 from stock from them. I have 404 on order from Hattons

Now unboxed. Look lovely, a few minor niggles but will be resolved during the customisation process.

I have to ask - what is in the background - looks like could be a head code panel from an 86?

Several retailers look like they might have sold their initial stock - showing them on back order? Hopefully plenty in Heljan warehouse - you never know production run sizes these days!  I have a set on order but some showing out of stock at mo.

What I assume were the pre-production photos of the Powerhaul 86622 the cab side numbers appear too bold/big and the logos above them too small.

Had asked the question as to whether the production versions would be different but yet to receive a response.

Hoping it’s just my eyes mind…

I collected the 5 loco’s that I had pre-ordered yesterday (my belated Christmas pressies … also early pressies for the next 4 years!)

As mentioned above, the shop checked the front handrails … one had partially detached from the front. It appears the foam packaging block sometimes knocks the handrail in transit. Although I could have glued the handrail back into position, the shop happily swapped the loco for another …

I’ve coupled the two RFD liveried loco’s together using a Bachmann hose coupler and commenced running them in. The IC Exec loco was a teeny bit stiff at first, but that and the others are now very smooth runners. A few pics below …

Very pleased with them, I like how the buffer shanks have been picked out in silver. Hopefully 86401 in NSE livery and perhaps an IC Mainline livery may follow at some stage, as well as some 86/2’s.

A lovely line up there.

ive got 8 on order now, exciting times… some renumbers planned.

My preference for a next batch would be 86231 Starlight Express, Mainline intercity livery, with black headcode boxes, and yellow ends not extending around the cab.

Another Intercity Swallow would be nice too, 86213 Lancashire Witch perhaps ? Plus obviously 86259, a plain blue/orange stripe and Rainhill 86…

Exciting times on the WCML..

They look great and I like your layout. It’s the sort of thing I’d like to end up doing when I retire.

Edited to add, how do those AMBR pans get on with your catenary? The 86/0 one didn’t sit quite right and was too strongly sprung.

Good photos at davidson parkway - will a review follow on the tube?

yes i would like a rainhill version too - how long did the two locos carry that livery for after the celebrations?

I read somewhere that it was until 1983. I already have a Hornby Rainhill one that I resprayed. 20201217_054218.jpg.f4140a5a90384f8c08c3ba19c545fc30.jpg

Thanks … probably not a review (I’ll leave the detailed reviews to the experts!) but for me it looks like a good 86 and the mechanism is the now standard heavy, reliable and smooth chassis … but I do plan to record and load a running session of each of them soon.

The pans got swapped around a lot. I recall at least one 87 with the AMBR pan, in IC executive with the extended yellow end, and possibly red bufferbeams. I am sooo tempted to get a second exec 86 and do the fuller yellow end when I sort the cabs out.

OOOOOOh that sounds interesting. Even after trawling through many Articles, books and copious amounts for Flickr Pics I've only ever found evidence of 3 Class 87's carrying the AMBR Pan. 87005, 87009 & 87101. All in Blue.

1st up 87005 City of London

87005 Lancaster

2nd up 87009 City of Birminham

Euston 1978.

3rd up 87101 although this little Doozy has Network Southeast branding!

87101. [EBR13-06]

Also found this little Gem as I had read that all of the class were fitted with the Brecknall Willis Panto before being repainted Into Intercity but this proves otherwise. Still fitted with the AEI Crossarm Panto

87018 Lord Nelson

87018 at Crewe

The more I look at it the more it seems that the lower edge of the dark grey band on the executive one needs to be a touch lower. It looks to be about 1/4 the way up the headcode box on pictures of the real thing. I’m going to amend it on mine when it comes. It’s less than a millimetre out, mind. I may also backdate it slightly by removing the RCH jumpers too, though the moulded earlier style of RCHs actually look good compared with the later ones.

In other news I have ordered the 2 RFD variants as they look great and 86426 arriving tomorrow. Exciting times!

My two have arrived today so I'll be chipping them later and they may well be the first locos to test Wednesford v3.0!

Interesting how many people seem to be buying multiple locos and the suggestion that some retailers have already sold out their first allocations.  Just goes to show how wrong all those sages were who kept saying "electrics don't sell".  Well, make the correct product and not only do they sell, but they seem to sell well.

.... and not particularly overpriced, certainly in comparison to the Hornby Class 87 now

I think you're right there, its a shade low but the bottom of the red is pretty much on the mark which makes me wonder where the red/white stripe is compromised. The exec grey should pass below the marker lights rather than across the bottom of the lenses with the bottom of the lens housing in yellow. Its only a minor niggle, the shiny chromed metal on the roof detracts more from 3ft away IMHO, and I'll have to do something about the lighting too. Mine will be undergoing the same tone down of the marker lights and tail lights as the 86/0 did, but I may have to live with the high intensity light being a bit...low intensity.

I’m a bit of a stickler for things like that, as it subtly changes the character to my eyes, but I also enjoy tweaking things to get them how I want them. That is the most satisfying part of the hobby for me. I printed one of the photos posted above and drew the corrected line on in pencil, and rest assured it looks spot on. Technically the cab window surrounds should be matt black, which is hard to tell on photos, so I’ll attend to that as well if required. It’s my favourite livery on the 86 so worth the effort.

I’m still waiting for my Exec version to get processed as I cocked up and deleted my pre-order, which seemed to be duplicated on Hattons. Back of the queue it is! If they run out, I can always get one of the others and respray it.

Red one arrived today.

Not wanting to be 'man shouts at cloud', but surprised how poor the roof detail is.  The pan looks like a toy, and the unpainted runs of bright wire are strange. :)

Hornby 87 arrived last week for same £186 price, and the roof detail is streets ahead on that.

This is something like the 28th Heljan loco I've bought, and the only one that has disappointed so far

In retrospect it's obvious in the retailer photos and seems the pan pros/cons were well covered in this thread.  But eh, high standards of RTR these days, I got lazy and made some assumptions

I think it might be the white stripe that is slightly too wide but I haven’t started tinkering yet. My 404 is going blue as 402 anyways ;-)
