Farish Rebuilt Merchant Navy DCC conversion help needed

Hi all

Hattons say DCC compatible but no socket, anyone know how compatible they are, I assume it just means its got a can motor so no digi hat needed.

 

If you have converted one of these was there enough room for the decoder or did it have to go in the tender with link wires to the loco.

 

Does it have a can motor or does it need a Digi Hat?
