I added a couple more locomotives, a Dean Goods and a Robinson 04. Both were RODs so I will eventually get around to numbering them. I have been doing research on the Bachmann Ambulance pack locomotive. I cannot find any evidence that the City Class were ever in France, so I assume that they were only used in the UK as fast passenger locomotives. If that is the case, why paint in khaki? Any ideas? I have ROD numbers for my other four locomotives and all served in France during WWI. As things stand, I have 6 ambulance coaches but probably won't be able ot use the locomotive on a French layout.

Apologies the Dean Goods is a bit blurred. I didn't realise until later. I will post more when the conversions are complete. It's time to start gluing down the Nissen huts and putting in the lights.

I added another book to my collection of Great war books. I've been busy working on fires today! I am putting some domestic fires in the ruined buildings for soldiers to use for warmth and a stack of burning wood near the track. Later (when I am better and more confident at soldering), I will add a camp fire and two braziers. I will post todays photos asap.

Wow! I just clicked on this thread having a bit of a browse and it's one I will now follow for sure! Some really great modelling going on and a very interesting prototype. No doubt many exhibition managers would be interested in this layout.

Hi Luke that's very kind thank you. I am designing it as an exhibition layout. I give talks for British Legions on WWI and WWII so I thought they might be interested. I wasn't sure it would be up to railway exhibition standard. I did my first ever layout in July so I am on the steep learning curve.

Well I have been busy for a change so will post a few photos of different things over the next couple of days.

Firstly I put lighting into my Nissen huts and they are finally glued down. I tend to superglue then PVA because the board will have to go vertical to get out my home and to my car so everything needs to be super secure. I decided on one less hut in the end rather than over do it. I have also been working on some additional bricks for the ruined houses. Note the tents are place holders for size. They need rounded ends, air vents, ropes and poles before completion.

I have added a burning effect wood pile and some additional wood but still need to paint it. It flickers quite well though. I may have an RE ROD man or two warming their hands over it at some point.

I have been adding some corrugated iron to an Airfix damaged building as the soldiers would have added extra protection from the weather when they had the materials available to them. I will add some more support posts for the roof once in situ. The floorboards were only just painted and so not attached yet, hence them not fitting as wee as I want them to when it goes onto the board. However, you see the fire place being used to illustrate the intended effect. I may add some furniture if it fits. I made a bunk bed and have a table and a couple of chairs. Even though ruined, I want them to appear lived in as it was still referable to a trench or dug-out in the cold earth.

I have being doing some work on the other buildings such as making them a bit more fire damaged and have some fire places to add for warmth for the troops. I will add those tomorrow.

I have taken delivery of some white and yellow wires to wire the lighting underneath this weekend. Some copper wire to support a parallel wiring system should arrive tomorrow. I have decided to use a dedicated 12V adaptor, rather than the controllers as I felt it may be easier when setting up. I have to solder the two braziers, resistors and camp fire at the weekend. A job us noobs dread :(

I have completed my first stretcher carrier on a narrow gauge wagon. The frames were home made and vary a bit in every photos I look at. They carried four or five stretchers. They were usually pushed by hand or pulled by horse along the narrow gauge track. I could have done a better job so I might re-do it. It was very fiddly. I have some stretcher cases ready to paint and a horse or two. Prisoners were often used to assist with casualties. I intend to portray this too. Even the 009 wagons are higher on 1/76 scale soldiers.

Excellent stuff so far, really liking your work. Nice use of the good old Airfix structures too.

Thank you for your comment Corbs and for all the other support from everyone. I really appreciate the encouragement.

I took delivery of a Hornby collectors series 0-4-0 ST today to convert to a WWI Baldwin ROD. I really have enough locomotives for the layout but I just love the saddle tanks and don't yet have one (although I did order a second hand Castle Donington Power Station loco which is where I am from).

I play a bit of Train Simulator and completed my first re-skin of a Mogul to a black WWI ROD at the weekend. That got me thinking and I ended up ordering a second hand black Mogul from Rails to do another ROD conversion for my layout.

The addition is strong with this one.

I spent some time thinking about whether I should have smart and straight cut duck boards or home made looking boards. I went with home made because it is easier but may change them if they look daft on the layout. So I decided to put some pews into the church and light it, even though the roof damage is pretty small. It also meant that I had to look at the windows and put a stone floor in the church. Other little jobs consisted of painting and cutting ladders for my ruined buildings, making trellises, painting the church a darker colour and some Causality Clearing Station signs. I have been buying some bits to convert my 0-4-0 ST into a Baldwin ROD. My Mogul should arrive tomorrow.

Found another nice little book. Moving my layout into another room and trying out the trestles tomorrow. Then it's the rubble. My Mogul arrived today too.

Edit: Forgot about this Baldwin ROD booklet I bought a while ago. Now that I am trying to represent a Baldwin 0-4-0ST, this will come in very handy. I've only seen one ROD photo online but this has several numbers and also shows them written in the traditional way, rather than ROD and the number somewhere else.

I have now put my layout on to the exhibition legs in another room. It is so much easier to work on too as I can around the front and back where I need to work. I had to saw two pieces off the bottom first though!

Below are photographs of the layout with all my recent work added. None of the lighting is connected below - yet.

I feel I am 50% complete at this point. Finishing the tents is proving to be a pain and stressful. My brain is just too small and my experience too little. I am going to add rubble next and perhaps the campfire and braziers. Some of the photos give an update of their own and I have spotted two typos already.....

I can't wait to see more texture, some plants, equipment, troops, nurses and of course locomotives to bring it to life. I have been gathering sound files for a background atmosphere :)

Lastly there will be some aircraft above and possibly some observation balloons in the distance. The balloons were the reason the Germans shelled 20 CCS on their first two days on site.

I got another two 00 locomotives: the Mogul and 0-4-0ST I want to convert to a Baldwin.  I have enclosed images of some 3D printed locos I am going to try and when painted as well as the Baldwin and Decauville I already had. Once I have got the tents sorted out, I will turn my attention to the removal of transfers and replacing them with ROD and WD versions. There is some work to do on the Macaws I have too. These will carry some tanks.

I have some WDLR rolling stock kits on the way (complete RE workshop set) as well as a Hunslet.

I attended an 009 Society meeting today for the first time and saw someone's Simplex which was tiny. However, it has prompted me to get going on my kit which has been sitting here for ages. I also appreciated the benefits of a small test track in 009 so that is another little project I am going to work on as I have spares enough (or almost) to make it.

I have finally laid down some rubble, coloured it, added some brick dust and then set about on adding texture to my roads. Once textured, I added lighter brown and then darker brown. I applied the same shades to the rest of the board as I wanted it a bit darker.

For the bricks I mixed PVA, Chinchilla dust, water, washing up liquid and brick coloured paint. I then added the rubble and then bricks on top. I fixed it with PVA, water and brick coloured paint. Once it was dry I touched up some of the darker pieces of rubble with a lighter colour.

For the roads I mixed 50% PVA and water and brushed it on the road surface. I used a tea strainer to add the Chinchilla dust. Once dry I vacuumed it with my USB keyboard vacuum and then applied the paint with a little PVA, water and brown wood filler.

I put in a few home made duckboards too.

Note: I am avoiding the tents and soldering  :beee:

  • 2 weeks later...

I attended my first 009 Society meeting and as a result, decided to build a portable test track. As I have both 00 and 009, it need to contain both so I built a 4ft x 3ft baseboard so I can run either gauge locos and have somewhere to test them, especially when new. I'm going to use foam underlay ballast for a change for both tracks. I've used cork twice before. The foam isn't glued yet but it is really good at dampening sound on my plywood base.

On this CCS layout, I have added braziers, a campfire and layout lighting above. I have everything to wire all the fires and lights up but I have been waiting for the tents to go on first. I still have one campfire and one more brazier to add when the tents are in place. I have decided to scrap the place holder tents and start all over again. I am still putting off doing that.

I have probably carried out most work in trying to conceal the entrance and exits to the layout and have put some shelving into my backboard to store locos and other rolling stock when not on the layout.

Finally I realised that I haven't shown any moving trains so the Youtube version below shows some of the narrow gauge stock on the layout.

Hi Noob.

What a fantastic layout this is and it can only get better. I am attempting to build something similar, but have little hope of producing anything half as good.

Would you mind posting a bit of info. about where you have got some of your items from? It looks as though the marquees might be freelance, but I would really appreciate knowing where the bell-tents come from. Also the Nissen huts.

I wonder if the difference between the locos (00?) and the Roco vans is very noticeable?

If you haven’t already come across him, there is a guy doing 3D printing under the trading name rue-d’etropal who produces both the 10 and 40 hp Simplex.

The 10 is too small to fit any kind of motor, but the 40, of which there are a number of variants, will fit a motorised bogie. I cannot at the moment remember details of that, but I have one, so if you’re interested, I can dig out the packaging and let you know.

Keep going and keep posting. You’ve got one devoted fan, at least.

Thanks Jack. I appreciate it. I am very new to all this so I suspect yours will be better :)

I haven't tried the Roco wagons with a loco yet. If they look too small, I may add a loco in their scale.

I have a Simplex to build with the appropriate chassis and two other kits with matching chassis too. In fact the amount of work still to so is daunting.

I am scrapping the place holder marquees. I was going to add the rounded end but would rather start again.

I got my stuff from lots of websites:

Model Scenery Supplies, Buttler's Printed Models, lots from ebay with searches, LAyouts4u, Dundas Models, Model Railways Direct, Track-Shak, Rails of Sheffield, Hatton's, Tennets Trains, Worsley Works, Osborn's Models, Langley Models, Wonderland Models, Amazon, W D Models and Modelsforsale.com

I dont' specifically remember which one the bell tents were from but probably Buttler's or Langley.

The Nissen Huts: Bachmann make the smaller ready built and painted at the front. The other you build and paint yourself and come in 2s. They are Peco Ratio and were from Track-Shak.

If you have something up I will look.
