Thanks Jack,

Found a seller on Amazon selling the same paint, made by Hycote (the company that makes Halfords paint) for 7 quid. Last one in stock for now sadly, but could be an alternative route for you. It looks better than Hornby for being that bit darker, I'll have to see how it compares to my Phoenix Precision painted FGW stuff when it arrives.

Thanks again

Jo

That's awesome! Cheers for that. In theory all you need to do is find the RAL code for FGW blue and then go on eBay and find the right canister to buy. That's what I've done for GWR green etc. Be interesting to see how it compares to Phoenix!

Happy to help matey.

Made a start on a commission that a mate's asked me to do. I sprayed up a DB 67029 'Royal Diamond' for him a while back, and now that my FGW projects are coming to a close, he's decided to keep me busy. I guess having two weeks annual leave is helping too...

So he's sent me a 2+6 HST to spray up into the later GC orange stripe livery. We're using the original GC 43s for the project, and whilst there are differences such as the cooler group being different owing to the new MTU engines which lead to the livery change, he's happy to compromise.

Hornby being Hornby don't make it easy when it comes to Mk3s, and so we're using "loco hauled" mk3s to spray up as they're what he could get his hands on at the time. 5x Hornby VT TSOs and 1x Hornby ex-VT RFM. Two of the TSOs are to become TF vehicles (the one furthest away from the buffet car was always a declassified FC vehicle), whilst the buffet is to become a TRSB. One side of the buffet car had the correct window configuration, but alas the other side was wrong. I should've in theory used a standard TSO vehicle for the buffet car as I've resorted to filler and PHD's rather excellent window etches, but hey.

First of all, the carriages got a soak in Phoenix's SuperStrip2

4 out of 5 TSOs are the same product code (coach F), whilst the other is a coach E. For some reason, the coach F ones stripped without any problems. Coach E however needed a lot more work to remove the white printing. Here's three of the first coaches all stripped down and ready for solvent to clean them up before painting.

Today's efforts have been focused around the buffet car. The two narrow windows have been opened up to full size to allow for the window etchings to go in without a problem, whilst another window has been cut out alongside where there wasn't one before. Under the filler is one of the 1/3 size windows being worked on. The original model had the 1/3 cut out in the middle of a full size frame (in theory), but it needs to be to the right for the prototype. Opened up the window, put in a spare bit of glazing, put filler in, and will then tidy up to allow the new window hole to be ready for frames.

Need to source some solvent from the local shops before I continue with the rest of the carriages. The buffet car will be sorted out as best I can before the frames arrive.

Cheers

Managed to tidy up and sand off the excess filler on the buffet carriage the other day. Turned out quite nice to be fair!

Met up with my mate yesterday (whose HST I am doing) for a social distanced catch up, and he handed me over some goodies that he'd sourced for me, including another carriage project  After the reasonable success of my WSMR mk3 buffet that I did years ago, I've decided to do another run of them owing to my improved skills and better knowledge and equipment.

Mine and @CazRail's coaches are due in the next couple of days, but I made a start on Eamonn's to keep me busy. Sanded all the window frames down, stripped off the paint, and filled and sanded the windows that needed blocking off. The etches will do the rest. So far so good!

Even dug out the spare window etches, of which I've ordered more of, to show what I'm aiming for...

Postman delivered some more Mk3s yesterday morning (7am too - ugh) for me to attack. These, as mentioned above, will join the other mk3 for WSMR buffet conversion. The window frames haven't arrived so I'm expecting them early this week all being well. Gives me something to do whilst I'm on call from home. Need to source some paint from Halfords as well to get the GC mk3s sprayed up.

Everything has received its final sand and all been cleaned up with solvent. The WSMR mk3s will be cleaned again after their window frames go on.

Picked up some Halfords black paint and cracked on with 5 out of the 6 carriages. Used quite a bit of paint surprisingly so may have to go and get another tin to complete the 6th carriage. And if it doesn't quite match the HST powercars, they'll need a respray too so we'll see how it goes.

Second coat is on and leaves me with this

The TSD vehicle is nearest the camera with its blanked off toilet window.

Undecided on which silvers/greys to use for WSMR so if anyone has anys suggestions that'd be awesome.

Cheers

If the black doesn't quite match, possibly giving the PCs the same varnish as the coaches may sort it?

That's one thing that ran through my head as well. Shall see what happens! Cheers lad.

Well it's fair to say it's been a bit quiet on here recently. Been waiting for some parts to come in which've been delayed owing to manufacturing COVID issues. Luckily they're now with me and I'm able to crack on with the Mk3s.

I'm 90% of the way there now with the WSMR buffet cars. All three carriages just need the new toilet windows modifications before I can make a start on spraying them. The GC buffet is also progressing well. I knew I'd be trying to get a factory finish, and it wasn't going to be achievable, but I think I've done well considering my experience and tools...

Afternoon all,

Meant to update the thread the other week but completely forgot. 4th October saw some silver paint applied to the three WSMR buffet mk3s. Have to say, it's turned out alright!

IMG_20201004_125541.jpg.14d56f4075c32349e42c4343b1ac42f6.jpg

Few little blemishes here and there but they'll be sorted out. Next up is working out which colour to use for the dark grey window bands and the doors. It'll no doubt end up being a rattle can off some website. Looking at RAL7012 for the dark grey. That should look nice once the carriages are masked up. With regards to the branding, Railtec currently only do the full white WSMR logos which were used on the blue/grey stock, but Steve Bell being the legend that he is is looking into making up a full pack with carriage numbers etc all included. Eamonn who I'm doing this GC HST for is happy for me to use the vinyl sticker pack that can be easily found on eBay to produce the orange stripes down the side of the train. As for the logos, again Steve Bell is working on this as it's only small adjustments from his Class 90 pack.

Slow and steady progress with these. Also got some more glazing on its way from Shawplan which'll hopefully give me enough usable windows when it comes round to putting everything back together again.

Typical, like buses, two posts come together! Picked up my birthday presents as I've recently celebrated 1/4 of a century old. As always, I prefer quality over quantity, and I wasn't disappointed this year. ESU loco cradle and decoder tester were a very welcome addition, and will have pride place on the workbench. Not had a loco cradle before, and so I can now service my locos safely knowing those screws won't off elsewhere as well thanks to the magnetic strip also.

Rattle cans arrived yesterday afternoon, so cracked on with masking up the carriages using the reliable Tamiya tape...

It compares rather well to the Hornby RTR mk3s that they released, so I'm pleased with that...

A number of blemishes that need sorting, but that's tomorrow's job whilst I'm on call (for now).

Been fiddling around with a soldering iron this morning, and I've now fitted the Illumination Models replacement lighting PCBs into my Fastline 66 loco...

A very simple process, with easy-to-read instructions provided. Fantastic product and worth the small investment.

Nice work Jack, the Fastline 66s were quite something!

Cheers Chris! Absolutely. Rarely saw them, but when the opportunity to buy an as-new 66 for £125 I couldn't say no.

great work with the light modification. They really do scrub up well with a few minor tweeks

Absolutely. Considering the prices have come down since the Hattons rattle-boxes came in, Bachmann's offerings are gonna fly off the shelves!

Yesterday I decided to try and get my 67025 up and running as it was having issues despite the track being cleaned beforehand courtesy of a Peco track rubber. A bit of fiddling with the bogie to try and clean the wheels resulted it popping off and a feeder wire not attached - bingo!

Got home from work and cracked on with resoldering the wire back on. Took the opportunity to clean the 4 axles and, despite looking relatively clean, were filthy as. Glad I got some track cleaning fluid yesterday afternoon during my car's MOT sesh.

Happy loco is a happy Jack

Very little has happened on my workbench thanks to my main attention being on the layout. However, I cracked on with sorting out that annoyingly different green engine on the front my all-blue sleeper rake...

image.png.ca74d349ad744acc36b968e297f83d73.png

Replacement logos, along with the end/side numbers, will be sourced from Railtec when they're back in stock. I tried using some leftover logos from previous FGW projects, but they started curling up and I got frustrated so got rid of the annoying bits.

It's not a full respray - was just a 'mask roof and fronts' job.
