RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted April 27, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 27, 2020 Yeah, the more I look at it, the more I think I agree with you. You can come back now... Thanks mate. Al.
LBRJ
The water tower, side on , is exactly how I thought of it... The shed is a bit big....maybe. it is also over the track that implies something to do with trains.... a smaller shed to the front may imply the presence of something like a house for a pump...to get the water up to the tank
Beechnut
You’ve mentioned the topography, wouldn’t be right for an overbridge. Would it be right for a water tank bearing in mind it would need a supply, and water was certainly an issue on the C&HP. Brendan
sb67
I like the way the tank looks side on, maybe with a tree the other side similar to the exit in Andy P's photos would soften the exit a treat. If you're worried about the plausibility of the position, could the tank be a relic from days with a different track layout and couldn't be moved so has been left where it is.
RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted April 28, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 28, 2020 The tank loos fine, but instead of the shed, add one of your excellent stone walls across the end, maybe with a bit of hill behind, blended into the backscene.
mullie
Water tower for me. The loco shed dominates too much. Once you bed it in I'm sure it will look great. Martyn 1
RMweb Gold Enterprisingwestern Posted April 28, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 28, 2020 The water tank with foliage and ivy inside it to be a view blocker and a fairly expansive tree at the other side would get my vote. Mike. 3
RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted April 28, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 28, 2020 Morning all. Thanks very much for all your thoughts, they're much appreciated. I will do as you suggest and return the shed to Cromford Wharf where it came from. @Beechnut, Thanks very much, you make a valid point, but actually provide a good excuse for some shunting: Quite a few of the water towers on the C&HPR werre filled from water trucks brought up from the mainline, so if I push the bufferstop back a bit on the siding, then a regular water delivery can go there. I'll crack on with this later. Thanks all, Al. 4
RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted April 28, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 28, 2020 (edited) You might need a little shed with a generator and an electric pump, to get the water from the tanker into the tank. And of course a diesel tank wagon. The little shed could go next to the water tower, just behind the buffer stop. RMweb Gold JustinDean Posted April 28, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 28, 2020 Use of the shed and water tank reminded me of this arrangement once used at Cromford. Do you think having a larger structure on the layout starts to detract from the ‘bleakness’ of the setting? 5

RMweb Gold Regularity Posted April 28, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 28, 2020 Yep, just the tank, side on.
RMweb Gold chuffinghell Posted April 28, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 28, 2020 Would it not be easier to just fill in the hole? The tank looks great and I agree with side on
RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted April 28, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 28, 2020 I've detailed and painted the tank now: I'm quite pleased how it's turned out. Next up, some undergrowth, then some wallage. Thanks for looking, Al. 14

StuartMc
20 hours ago, Regularity said: I think the incline at Cromford Wharf counted as the “main line”... Michael Oakley's book "BR Diesel Freight in the Traditional Era" that I'm reading just now mentions that (presumably in the early 70's) that after some of the lines were removed, they used to haul class 03 diesels up the incline to work at the otherwise isolated upper section!
Andrew P
Looks great Al, don't forget a bit of Ivy around the legs towards the backscene / hole, that will help hide and soften it as well. 2
RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted April 28, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 28, 2020 Cheers Andy. I don't think I've ever done ivy (as the bishop said to the actress) I'll need to have a play with some flockage. Al. 1

Forget Ivy, think Brambles that grow about 5 to 6ft high and would wrap around the legs, plus as Johnster has just said; Shrubbage.

RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted April 28, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 28, 2020 There's far too many Monty Python fans round 'ere... Anyway, I've made a start on some wallage. I take some 6mm x 2.5mm styrene rod, and whittle the edges off: Then I chop it up into little pieces: ...and then I glue it back together again: Thanks for looking, Al 7
