RMweb Gold Popular Post Alister_G Posted May 10, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted May 10, 2020 As mentioned, today I continued painting the track. However, before I did that, I added the power, as there's no point painting the rail sides, only to scrape the paint off again to solder the droppers. It's a complex bit of wiring, as you can see: Then I made a start on the painting. The rail sides were painted in Humbrol Acrylic 113 Rust: Then the chairs were picked out in Humbrol Acrylic 62 Matt Leather: Then I turned the module round and did the other side: I then applied a dilute wash of Matt Black to the sleepers and the ballast in the centre of the track: The overall effect is more or less how I wanted it: Now I can turn my attention to the landscape. Thanks for looking, Al. 18
RMweb Gold Popular Post Alister_G Posted May 10, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted May 10, 2020 Finally tonight a bit of Capability Brown. To the top of the cork surfaces I added a good layer of PVA: Followed by wet newspaper: And so on, with more layers on top: and some smaller detail pieces round the banking: That'll do for tonight: Thanks for looking, Al. 25

RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted May 11, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted May 11, 2020 Very little to report today except more layers of PVA and paper, and the introduction of some mild lumps and bumps in the landscape. I'm turning over in my mind, what will be the best way to build the stone embankment. Whether to use an embossed styrene sheet for the majority of it, and then top it with one of my celebrated drystone walls, or build the whole thing out of individual styrene stones as a really massive drystone wall. The archway, I will build myself, obviously. Thanks for looking, Al. 14
RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted May 11, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted May 11, 2020 I joined the module back up to the main board to check that the contours of the landscape match across the join. As you can see, they don't quite match, so some trimming and reshaping will have to happen before I start to apply the grassage. But it's not too bad. Regarding your stone embankment - wouldn’t using two materials look a bit disjointed?
RMweb Gold JustinDean Posted May 12, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 12, 2020 Just had a look at some photos of Minninglow embankment and reckon your dry stone wall technique would look bang on. 1

Thanks Jay, Not necessarily, if you look at the photo below, there is a definite difference between the construction of the embankment itself, and the wall that sits on top: Copyright John Evans, used with permission. 1 hour ago, JustinDean said: Just had a look at some photos of Minninglow embankment and reckon your dry stone wall technique would look bang on. As above, I'm not sure that the open small stones would suite the embankment, which seems to be more regular and closely spaced courses of stone. I've got some Slaters' 7mm Cotswold Stone on order to see what that looks like. Cheers, Al. 6

RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted May 12, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted May 12, 2020 It's the North side about in the middle. The South side has the big buttress at the bottom, but not this side. Al.
RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted May 13, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted May 13, 2020 As I said in my last post, the new module's landscape didn't quite match that on the existing board. So this evening I took a scalpel to it, and then replaced the papier mache. That's more betterer. Thanks for looking, Al. 11 1
RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted May 13, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted May 13, 2020 Annoyingly, I've had to do some more running repairs to Ladmanlow tonight. Having connected up the new module and wired it in I thought I'd test it. Imagine my surprise when I found that on the first turnout on the main board, the whole common crossing, the closure rails and the inner diverging rails were all dead, no matter which way the point was thrown. This worked fine the last time I used the layout, so that was a tad annoying. Investigation with a meter showed that the Gaugemaster Autofrog was happily switching the voltage correctly, and the wire to the lead from the frog was energised, but the rails themselves were no longer connected. So I drilled a little hole, and soldered a piece of wire to the inside of the V and fed that back to the autofrog, and everything started working again. Most annoying. RMweb Gold Popular Post Alister_G Posted May 13, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted May 13, 2020 (edited) Whilst I was mucking about under Ladmanlow, I took the end board off to make it easier to turn on it's side to get at the wiring. When I'd finished, I looked and noticed that Cawdor, which is next to it on the bench, made an interesting backdrop: So I took some photos: And then I thought: "I wonder what they would look like side-by-side" So, balanced precariously with a judicious lump of timber underneath, here they are: Which gives rise to some interesting views: There's a bit of fun... And here's Ladmanlow safely back where it should be Thanks for looking, Al. Edited May 13, 2020 by Alister_G smelling 15
