RMweb Gold lezz01 Posted July 22, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 22, 2020 Hi Al. Have you seen the quoins that York model makers do? They are much better than the Wills one's. Regards Lez.

RMweb Gold Popular Post Alister_G Posted July 22, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted July 22, 2020 (edited) Thanks very much for all your comments. Things have moved on a bit now. Yesterday I created the quoins using filler, as suggested by @Stubby47. I then left it to dry thoroughly over the course of today. Then tonight, I started by giving it an all over coat of Matt white primer from a rattle can: and then I started the process of painting. First, all the stonework (quoins, door and window frames etc) was painted in Humbrol 63 Matt Sand, except for the frames for the two main bedroom windows, which were painted in Humbrol 237 Desert Tan. The chimneys were also painted in that colour. Then a wash of Humbrol 91 Black Green was made up, and applied over the top. For the limestone, a wash of Humbrol RC413 Engineer's Grey was applied, and then whilst the second coat of that was still wet a thin coat of 237 Desert Tan was applied and immediately wiped off, leaving the mortar colour in the gaps. Here's how it looks now: And here's a reminder of what we are aiming for: Thanks for looking, Al. RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted July 23, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 23, 2020 I took a couple of photos in the sunlight this morning: As a result I decided to tone the colouring down a bit, as it was a bit too warm. So this evening I made a start on the two bay windows, and then dry-brushed some more matt white across the face of the stones, I'm happier with the look of this now. RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted July 23, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 23, 2020 (edited) Maybe add a light grey wash as well? Edited July 23, 2020 by Stubby47

There is a light grey dry-brushing on there as well. I don't want to add any more washes as the mortar colour is more or less how I want it. RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted July 25, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 25, 2020 (edited) I wasn't at all happy with the first go at making the bay windows - the styrene I used was far too thick, so I've chopped them off and will start again with a more sensible size. However, I don't actually have any in stock, so I've had to order some. This won't be here until Wednesday or Thursday next week, so for now the house is on hold. And so is everything else, modelling wise, as I've spent today under the Land Rover trying to fix the power-steering Al. RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted July 28, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 28, 2020 I haven't posted for nearly a week, but I've been busy none the less. So here's a quick catch up: The track is laid, and as you can see it's painted a nice subtle colour: No further progress on the house, but I have added the old sheds, which will be buried in the landscape at the back: Here's a view down the track from each end: And just to set your minds at rest, I've buried the red in some good old dirty brown: Things will be toned down further with some Humbrol 113 Rust on the rail sides. Yes, it was that or white primer, and I reckoned the red was the least worst option... Anyhow, that's all hidden now, the rail sides have been painted, and the ballast has been drowned in PVA / water mix, and looks rubbish...
