A good iron (not the one for clothes) good flux and solder and you should be away with your skills. If unsure, why not get a metal wagon kit and try that first. What is it btw?

Thanks Jonathan. Oh sorry yes I didn't say what it was... It's a Kitson 0-4-0ST: perhaps the most iconic of the C&HPR locos.

I have done some MSE signals before, so not a complete novice at the structural soldering, and I've also bought a 5-inch hold-and-fold thingy as well to get nice straight folds for the frame and so on.

Yeah a brass wagon might be a good starter to bodge, though, good idea.

OK Al, just to spur you on, here's my model of 47000 at work on my previous Middlepeak layout. Built from a Jidenco kit with many modifications, it has a 1219 Portescap motor and Sharman wheels, all of which date it considerably. That said, it survives in full working order after at least 25 years and will appear on the current Friden layout as a light engine returning from Crewe Works after repair in 1956 following the Steeplehouse derailment.

I've looked at Mike's kit on his stand at shows, and it looks an excellent model. What's more, Mike's reputation as a kit designer suggests that it will be a relatively straightforward and enjoyable exercise to put it together. Take your time, and I hope you're pleased with the result. If you need any help ..... SHOUT!!

All the best,

Geraint

If you think that's scary Al you should have a look at the ex George Norton MR Kirtley 0-4-4 WT that's now in the London Road stable. That's really scary. I had one and I flipped a coin, heads I framed it, tails I sold it on Ebay. It came down tails and I made a nice profit. I have to say that the Kitson looks a very nice kit though. Good luck with it mate.

Top stuff, Al.

The Kitson is a lovely looking loco and as you say, a tad iconic re the C&HPR.

Now here's a scary thing...

I've bought a Judith Edge kit :O

Not sure when I'm going to pluck up the courage to start it.

EEEEEEEEK!

Al.

Saw that, thought “but what loco is that?”, spotted the curved bits, thought “saddle tank, so got to be 47000” and I was right!

Good luck with it. I’ve no experience of soldering or brass loco kits, so will follow with interest!

Thanks Jay, not sure yet which one I'll number it as. I think the later ones are a slightly different design, with a shorter saddletank set further forward. The kit is based on 47000 and 47001 which look like this:

Whereas later numbered locos looked like this:

I've done it again.

I took Ladmanlow for a little trip, and this time I persuaded my brother to join me:
