RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted May 14, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted May 14, 2020 Would you believe it, some absolute goit has built a wall all the way across the embankment. How am I supposed to get my sheep up the lane now? Oh, and they didn't make a very good job of joining it up, either... Well that's better, I suppose... Now in white primer, and a bit of grassage as well: And finally with a first paint: Just got to decide how to do the archway, now. Thanks for looking, Al. 10

Looks like you will have to give your sheep a good supply of picks and shovels to get through that embankment!

RMweb Gold Popular Post Alister_G Posted May 15, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted May 15, 2020 The sheep can stop worrying now, there's a big hole in the wall. I cut out a template of the size I wanted for the archway from some 10thou styrene sheet: and used it as a guide to cut a hole in the embankment: Then I used offcuts of courses of the same Slater's sheet to create the stone arch: When that was done and trimmed I attached a backing plate of 20thou styrene as a way to join it securely to the embankment: Like this: It's not stuck in permanently yet, I want to paint it separately, which I will do now. Then, I'll repeat what I've done so far on the reverse of the embankment, and then create the lining of the bridge. RMweb Gold Popular Post Alister_G Posted May 15, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted May 15, 2020 So here's the archway painted now: And here's where I've got to on the rear of the embankment: I didn't stitch the join between the two sheets here, and I'm regretting that now. Let's hope painting it will disguise it a bit. And finally... Here's the model: and here's the real thing: Copyright John Evans, used with permission I'm quite pleased with how that's turned out. RMweb Gold chuffinghell Posted May 15, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 15, 2020 Brilliant!....I still think letting the sheep loose with TNT would have worked too but perhaps not a neat
sb67
Nice work Al I like the way you made the arch, I'll have to remember that one for future reference. 1

RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted May 16, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 16, 2020 Very nicely done. I'm sure some ivy or a water stain would cover the join on the rear wall. Or a buttress. 2 1

RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted May 16, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted May 16, 2020 There's an old Derbyshire saying, "dunna whittle yussen". So I didn't, I whittled some plastic instead. I've started to make the raw material for walling, by removing the edges off some styrene strip, and then chopping it into little pieces: There's a whole lot more of that to do, but in the meantime, I've finished making the second arch, for the back of the embankment: Still not happy with the join. RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted May 17, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted May 17, 2020 I managed to have some quality modelling time this morning, and got a fair bit done. Here's the front arch for the passageway under the embankment: to the back of which I stuck some offcuts of 80thou styrene sheet: These will both strengthen the arch, which was showing signs of warping a bit, and also provide attachment for the internal walls of the passage. So I spent some time carefully measuring and cutting the side walls to shape: And then the roof, which was curved by simply bending the sheet between every course of stone: this fits the curve of the top of the arch: And joins to the sides like so: When I was happy with the fit, I painted the walls and roof: using the same technique as for the embankment walls, but with the addition of some dry-brushed green to show some water leakage and moss. Another test fit: and then I stuck it all together: and then put in place on the board: I placed the embankment wall back in position, although it's not stuck down yet: I reckon that looks quite good, I'm pleased with it so far. The grass has taken a bit of a beating though, I'm going to have to recover it I think. Thanks for looking, Al. 7
