Hi Al, Like the photo effects, is there a programme that if your old and wrinkly already (like me), can reverse it and make you look modern and trendy. All the best Adrian.

I'm sure there must be mate, it's what they use in all the best magazines :D

Mind you, it's probably bloody expensive, might be easier to wrap yourself in clingfilm...

Hi Al, now if I'd have read this topic earlier I'd had realised you changed your username!!!!!! I had wondered where you were as I had been follower of your other topics and have always enjoyed your very helpful tutorial pics within them.

Once again a craking layout and another to follow. Now I must go back to page 7 and continue :sungum:

Thanks to Stubby, I'm now the proud owner of a cornish chad mountain:

So my evening will mostly be spent doing this:

And when I've done that one, I've got this to do, now with window and door:

But I thought I'd spend a couple of minutes finding views around the layout, now the ground cover is mostly done:

Back to tiling now.

Thanks for looking,

Where did you get this load of plastic from? Looks very useful! Need to get into scratchbuilding myself, any tips or good places to get supplies or small projects to practice?

Hi,

The chads are paper offcuts which Stubby kindly sent me, but you can cut your own from any paper, really.

The various styrene tubes, rods, strips and embossed sheets are available from all model shops, and also off the internet through ebay or direct from various resellers. I have regularly used 2K Technologies (http://www.2ktechnologies.com/ ) Kitlady ( https://www.kitlady.co.uk/ ) Hattons (https://www.hattons.co.uk/ ) and Track-Shack (https://www.track-shack.com/ ) amongst many other suppliers.

I  use Butanone (methyl ethyl ketone) as a solvent to glue styrene together, it can be readily bought off Ebay in bulk, which is a lot cheaper than buying the branded version from model shops.

My first ever scratchbuild was a small lineside hut, but if there's some structure you need then have a go. Just identify what materials you need and get in a stock of various bits and have a go.

This was my first ever structure:

But I also built these:

This sort of thing can be bought ready made, but it's much more fun doing it yourself.

Hope this all helps.

Al.

That backdrop really makes the photos stand out, Al. I must look into some for my Buxton inspired layout.

Hi Jonathan, thank you.

The full backdrop looks like this:

backscene002.jpg.f5f7e72b05f7d8042f9623a1774323a9.jpg

which is made from a number of photos stitched together using some clever software.

At full size, it's about 20 feet long and two feet high.

You are all very welcome to download the full version if it is any use to you, available here:

https://imgsrv.pickworth-uk.net/rly/backscene-full-002.tif

Be warned, it's 169MB in size.

There's also this one, which is a bit smaller:

backscene001.jpg.75216ea2db7ac0eab6828a5ffda8aa21.jpg

Available here:

https://imgsrv.pickworth-uk.net/rly/backscene-full-001.tif

at 160MB file size.

There are various backdrop suppliers who will print these for you to your desired size, or if you know any graphics design businesses, they would probably do it for you for a fee.

Cheers,

Al.

Hi Al, thanks for the download. Took no time at all. There are a couple of businesses in the small town where we have our own home and where the layout lives, so I will give them a try. Then there's ID Backscenes who will also print from your own files.

Thank you very much for the suggestions! I still don’t know what I’d need to specifically buy.

My goal is a couple of small huts and houses and a pub like building.  I need to do a platform too but I think I need to use wood coated in plasticard for that.

Love your models there!

It's very difficult to advise you on that without a better idea of what you want to build. I would suggest you get in a stock of 10thou, 20thou, 40thou and 80thou plain styrene sheet to use for the basic structures, along with stocks of styrene strip in 10thou thickness and 20thou thickness in 10, 20, 40, 60 and 80thou widths. This will give you the ability to build a basic shell, and window and door frames, and various detail pieces.  Slaters, Evergreen and Plastruct all have ranges of these sorts of items.

Then I suggest you look at embossed styrene sheets for brick, stone, planking (for doors etc) and any other textures you feel you need. Slaters, SE Finecast and Wills all make different scales of these sheets.

You will also need something to cut these with - a sharp craft knife is often used, but my preference would be a medical scalpel with a range of blades. Swann-Morton are the default manufacturer of choice. And then you need a cutting mat, a straight edge like a steel ruler, and maybe an engineers set-square or two.

Maybe you could start a topic in the Modelling Questions, Help and Tips section of the forum to get other modellers' thoughts, and if you have a specific building in mind to copy, if you post some photos in there, we could suggest more specifically what you would need.

Hope this helps,

Al

Whilst they showcase the layout admirably and the pictures look great, up until that point I had an image of LS being at the top of a windswept outcrop with panoramic views down the valleys!

Great photo's Al, the backscene gives the layout real depth.

Thanks gents,

Yes, these were just to see what it would look like, really, and I won't be using these photographic backscenes to display this layout, Just a plain faintly coloured background, I think.

A plain back scene will contribute more to the overall feel of the layout, Al.
