Al.

I can just hear the local brass band playing Dvorak’s ninth symphony (‘From the New World’ - Hovis advert music)...

In an effort to improve the lighting, I bought a 2Metre strip of LEDs in "Daylight" colour temperature.

Here they are draped across the front of the layout:

And here's what they look like turned on:

I thought I'd try some photos using just them, plus what residual daylight is available.

I've changed nothing on the camera, so what you see is what you get, more or less.

Compare with those taken the other day in the room lighting, which is normal halogen household bulbs:

I'm a bit unsure whether I like the daylight look, it seems very blue. I might get some "warm white" to try as well.

I would welcome your views.

And the advert was filmed in Shaftesbury - Dorset!

Also try both together.

Might be worth also trying it with a “roof” over the layout, of white-painted hardboard or ply, to remove or at least reduce extraneous light from around the layout.

Thanks, yes I thought of trying that. If I get both I can try them together and seperately, see which combination I prefer.

I really need to get on and build a proper box for the layout to live in.

Can I ask, how tall is your cabinet / box for Sheep Lane?

Morning Al.

It's probably better to refer to Mutton/Bleat Wharf. They are the same and any future layouts based on the same IKEA table tops will also follow this pattern.

The cabinet uses 9mm MDF to box every thing in, including the roof.

The sides and ends are 30cm tall. So the height of the roof to baseboard surface is 25cm as the bottom of the cabinet is flush with the bottom of the baseboard which is 5cm thick.

The fascia extends 5cm below the roof which creates a viewing 'slot' 20cm deep, 25 if you include the depth of the baseboard.

The fascia extends some 5cm out of the front edge of the baseboard with the first strip light set on this edge to illuminate the front of the baseboard. The second strip light is set in the middle of the roof and a baffle is placed in front of this strip light.  The reason for this is to avoid looking directly at the strip light when looking into the layout.

Here's a view of the cabinet for Bleat which I have posted elsewhere but I hope fills in any gaps in my waffle above.

I should add that I line the inside of the roof with same colour card as the back scene. The lighting baffle is also this colour.

Yep, nowhere else for it except the garage at the moment.

Al

Was looking at your spooky new avatar and thought Al's not looking so good lately...

...and that explains it...

...you're not eating!:jester:

Enough leg pulling. About the lighting. I replaced all the strip lighting in my barn/woodwork shop with LED types. Now my finish quality has gone down because there's about 40 shadows everywhere. Not easy to work under not to mention the dull headache. You're ok though because you can still use the normal lighting for working.

The blue is a bit intense.

Great modeling as always mate.

So I've now received the Warm White LEDs to complement the Daylight ones I had before.

Here's a few comparison shots:

Daylight Only:

Warm White Only:

ladmanlow706.jpg.d2ae4db8e2dfde4e64e12fd55363ed72.jpg

and Both together:

ladmanlow707.jpg.8853234673174d9fe626956df2b63e67.jpg

Warm White:

ladmanlow708.jpg.a6957e724493b756a9d9a626809a95e7.jpg

Both:

ladmanlow709.jpg.55a56cabe6b15ff7913a266b06a42ab2.jpg

Warm White:

ladmanlow710.jpg.d8f43ab891b1fdf2443209b0f7709cf6.jpg

Both:

ladmanlow711.jpg.1548622f208566d142c841cd08cc5acd.jpg

So maybe for some shots I might use the Warm White on its own, but I think for normal use, the combination of both gives the best tones.

Thanks for looking,

Al.

Hi Al.

Both together looks to be spot on and is certainly my preferred option on my own layouts.

As you know, when the mood takes me, putting me in reach of some styrene whilst I'm holding a scalpel can cause untold mayhem.

And so it has been this week, where I've attacked an innocent piece of styrene rectangular rod like this:

ladmanlow712.jpg.a8c6858a96ecb8fdbd71f949b57aa79c.jpg

and turned it into this:

ladmanlow713.jpg.8fcef7215f34277cce710a9930724928.jpg

causing lots of this:

ladmanlow714.jpg.915fc95b728c714f8462fd65420e5003.jpg

but also resulting in lots of this:

ladmanlow715.jpg.df3c495030e2d0ec279fca356c33f5e9.jpg

Which means, look out! There's a wall to be built. It's the continuation of the wall round the back of the Weighbridge hut.

Unlike previous walls on the layout, because of the nature of the geography, this one will have to be built in situ.

Here's the start of it. The piece of paper is to stop the new wall sticking to the old one, whilst the MEK evaporates, so that once hardened, I can lift it (hopefully) and carry it off to be painted.

ladmanlow718.jpg.b69c25d6777f7f65645731507c7aad96.jpg

And here's where I got to tonight:
