I recently completed the Tunnel Mouth at the other end of the scenic section although this wasn't as straightforward as the first tunnel as the line here butts right up against the baseboard edge.

The basic outline of the hill was built up using styrene pieces sold for putting flower arrangements in.

Once a reasonable shape had been achieved it was painted a base brown colour and then covered with differing layers of static grass.

The next step was to add the dry-stone walling and fencing.

Finally a plastikard  retaining wall was added which was made to match as close as possible with the stonework of the tunnel.

Capping stones were made individually from balsa so that they could be fitted on the wall top and follow the contours of the wall and more grass and foliage was added.

One of the advantages of taking lots of photos is that they highlight the faults that the eye doesn't see so a bit of vegetation will now be added to disguise where the retaining wall has sprung away from the tunnel mouth.

The Road to Nowhere

The next stage on the country section was to try and create a road which appeared to go round past the station and then carried on out into the country. As usual I didn't have the space to do what I wanted properly so compromises were needed plus a bit of deception  (is this common to all railway modellers or is it just me)?

The first step was to build up a road surface using plaster on a foam bed.

A crossing, path and gatekeepers hut were added, plus a temporary backscene was added to help planning until the correct section arrived

Now further work has been carried out we return to the road to nowhere.

With the addition of a slightly higher station wall and a large overhanging tree.

Plus the ever useful double decker bus as disguise hopefully the road now looks as though it heads off into the distance.

This afternoon the ex L&Y 2-4-2 simmers in the bay platform with the inspection saloon while waiting for the heads of department to board.

And then makes a leisurely departure.

Later on we see it further down the line as it continues its tour.

Quite a lot of work was done internally to the saloon, painting detailing and adding figures which I thought would show better with the amount of windows but much of it is lost at a normal viewing distance.

The inspiration for the warehouse scene came from The Tetley's Mills layout which I greatly admired and still refer back to today for modelling tips.

For me the iconic photo on that layout was of the canal with its warehouses and bridges and while I don't pretend that my model is in the same league it certainly provided me with the motivation to attempt this.

I don't normally put lighting inside buildings but with something this size I wanted to portray the atmosphere you got with the dull yellowish lighting and blackened windows they all seem to have.

A new addition to the roster is A3 Persimmon (originally Minoru renamed, weathered and detailed plus some coats of Klear to give it a sheen).

Here we see it on shed and being prepared for duty.

And later it pulls into the station to begin work.

Here we have the Holden B12 heading out to assist with ballasting, it's hauling a train of Dogfish ballast wagons.

Byford at Night

All the various lights on the layout are working ones as there are a lot of excellent types to choose from nowadays so I thought we might as well do the job properly and have illuminated street lights.
