richard.h
Lots of minor detailing done this week, road signs and markings plus railway restriction notices. I also found these very nice little tricycles and barrows online so we have the window cleaner at work. And the odd-job man looking to earn some money.
richard.h
Its been very hot throughout August here ( temperature in the 30s) a bit uncomfortable for running trains so I decided to try a bit of scratch building instead. This corner of the layout has never been developed properly, I originally chopped up two Walthers buildings into half-relief kits to provide a filler for the space. What I really wanted there was a typical complex of traditional West Riding Mills so now a start has been made on the first unit for that. The Gable end wall of the first building was mapped out first to see if the required effect was acceptable. That looked OK so the basic building shell was constructed and given its first coat of pale stone paint and then checked for appearance and fit.

richard.h
More work done on the Mill Building, two layers of weathering dry brushed on, chocolate and soot black. Then roof, guttering and downpipes fitted A bit more work to do but it can now be tried in position. I blocked off most of the ground-floor windows as this happened in a lot of mills. The lower floor was used as a warehouse so they infilled the arched windows with cheap brick to provide maximum storage space as they didn't need the light for machinery

Thanks for that, it's a bit tricky on your own walking backwards while controlling a loco and camera and trying not to knock anything over but got it right in the end.
richard.h
A bit more work has been done on the Mill Complex this week firstly an access tower which would normally house the stairs, lift and hoist controls was built. This butts up against the main building. After looking at it I thought it needed a bit more detail so I opened up one set of doors and fitted in some interior walls, steps and lift doors. Just the hoist mechanism to fit now when I can obtain some suitable pulleys. Then the next stages will be to build entrance gate and office, and a second mill building with an upper storey bridge between the two.
richard.h
Today 60003 Andrew K McCosh (that's a name you don't forget, I know I definitely copped it) has been put on the Scotch Goods and here we see it racing through Oxenholme Then it passes a J15 waiting in the bay with a parcels train and heads out into the country.
richard.h
A quick look around the sheds today to see whats in:- So we spot a Super D just been coaled up. And Black Watch on the Turntable.
richard.h
And now we are just in time to see the Garratt depart. Ready to haul another long coal train.
richard.h
We return to the Station just in time to see 60003 running through with the Scotch Goods. The signal gantry here has been cobbled together from broken ratio kits that I have had for years just to get an idea of the visual effect. I've always liked appearance of complex semaphore gantries on station approaches so for me a non-working semaphore set is probably preferable to a working colour light set, I just need to research it and build something suitable.

richard.h
I bought a model of the latest Hornby Duchess some time ago but haven't done much with it until now as I wanted to give it the best possible sound and some very light weathering but wasn't sure of the best approach until I read a couple of good articles in Hornby Magazine dealt with this and proved to be a great help. I wanted to keep the Coal Pusher feature but at the same time fit the best speaker possible so I removed the factory fitted weight and cut down its mounting brackets. This gave me just enough room to fit a Dumbo Speaker, Zimo Decoder and Stay Alive Capacitor plus some lead fishing weights in the chassis base to improve the running. richard.h
The next step was a light weathering, she would still have been the pride of the fleet and kept in excellent condition until the final years. So the weathering was concentrated mainly on the tender (staining down the rivets on the side) plus oil and grease on the rods. The Coal Pusher feature was preserved although the loco desperately needs a top-up.
Luke123
I love the shot of the tender in the last pic, it really does show the subtle weathering

richard.h
A bit more work has been done on the Mill Complex this week:- The entrance gates and transport office were added. A second Mill Building was made. So the area now looks like this with still a lot of detailing to do plus the ground needs work ( cobbles or granite sets?)
richard.h
I really liked the new Accurascale Cement Wagons but thought they would look out of place on my layout in their gleaming silver finish. Also I imagine in real life they would be very soon caked in cement dust. Then I read a very good article on weathering them so I decided to risk it, buy some and have a go myself. The first stage was to weather the chassis with a mixture of browns plus frame dirt and track wash on the solebars. The next step was to streak the sides with a broad flat brush using gray colours with a touch of yellow (this is the moment when you think have I gone to far and messed them up)

Thanks for that, I was a bit worried I had spoiled a lovely model but there was one more process to do (shown on the next posting) which I have just completed and it seems to have tidied them up a bit.
