I wanted to fit a section of river in this corner of the layout but couldn't think of a convincing way of fitting it in (they don't usually appear from under retaining walls).

In one of this months magazines there was an article on creating a pond so i decided to give that a try and see if it would work.

After marking out a suitable size this was cut out and a base made which was sealed with PVA glue.

Then the pond was contoured with a mix of fine gravel and glue plus some rocks and at the moment a rather unfortunately shaped island.

The land around the pond was built up and given a base coat of brown paint and the first of some thin layers of varnish were poured into the pool to build up some depth.

Coarse turf was added at the same time which soaked into the varnish to give the appearance of weeds in the water.

And then more vegetation was added for contrast  and a first layer of water ripple effect was applied, more will be added later to try and give the effect of a pond on a breezy day.

Been away for a week so just a bit more work done to try and finish off the pond area, fencing was placed around the site plus more foliage and layers of water ripples in the pond.

Then the junction Signal Box was fitted in plus some trees to complete the scene.

When I first started building this layout I wanted to re-create a typical West Riding appearance so inspired by layouts like Jason T's Bacup (I know its the wrong side of the Pennines but its exceptional) my first attempt at scratch building was this row of workers cottages961293104_IMG_1559(2).JPG.dd12118c28b5e3e467080bacc82adc99.JPG

About the same time the Post Office decided that they weren't going to ship glues and paint anymore and with no modelling supplies available locally I could not get the materials required so it needed a rethink and I switched to kits and RTP models for the time being until I could source alternatives. The only benefit of this was that it did at least speed up the construction process

Nowadays obtaining Paints isn't such a problem and also new materials such as the laser cut products are available and so having being very impressed by layouts such as Halifax Powell Street which has  the type of appearance I would like to achieve I decided to start and upgrade some of my buildings.

 

The first one chosen was a simple low relief building where I could experiment with colours and textures so this started off with a basic plastkard shell which was given a coat of stone paint632451243_IMG_1542(2).JPG.25ff2b54facc6ee4db1fd67e8479fb49.JPG

 

Then a second layer of chocolate colour was dry brushed over.

Finally a layer of Dirty Black from the Lifecolor range was lightly brushed over and the windows and other fittings added.

So now the original building which was looking shabby ( especially since some of the cheap paints used had leached into the structure)

Just a final picture to add to the previous posting, I thought it best to tidy up the whole area while I was at it so we now have a boundary wall for the factory plus a new shop unit (a butchered Walthers kit that was lying around) and road markings.

Here is a video of A3 Persimmon coming of shed to take over The Northumbrian.

This has been fitted with the new Hornby A3 TTS sound decoder which has a very good range of sound files, I changed the speaker from the one supplied to a Flame 12 model and this has also improved the sound quality so overall it gives a good performance for a budget sound decoder.

I am not exactly sure what a Sentinals duties would have been in real life but today on Byford this one is being sent down to the Station Goods Yard to collect supplies, that's my excuse anyway to get it away from its normal shed duties and give it a run around the layout.

The central section of the new countryside line has been undeveloped for over a year, the reason being that it was built with Bullhead Rail and needed the release of the matching single slip to complete it.

Unable to wait any longer I finally admitted defeat and purchased a code 75 slip instead.

The other things pre-planned for this new section were magnets under the trackbed for the Kaydee couplings.

Point Rodding and Signal Box.

Fitting the rodding was partly a test to see how difficult it would be to retro fit it to the rest of the layout (Possible I think with care).

Plus a Signal Box with earth barricade made from coffee stirrers, I knew I would find a use for them one day.

A slight problem this week, although a nice one, I wanted a model of A2 Velocity on the layout so I purchased the numbering set and ordered the cheapest version of Bachmanns special edition Blue Peter that I could find on the internet as it appears to have the same boiler fittings. I wasn't too bothered about the condition as long as it was a reliable runner as it would be weathered anyway as are all my other 1950s locos.

When it arrived it was I was surprised to find it in perfect condition as though it had never been out of the box.

So now there is a decision to be made, do I keep it in this condition and run it occasionally on the layout or bite the bullet and turn it into a scruffy Velocity, if so has it lost most of its value.
