The Hornby Engine Shed blog might be a good place to start.

As for a glowing firebox feature or pre-fitted speaker, I'm not aware of these.

However, the flickering firebox was a late announcement on the part of the Princess Class shortly before release.

Dapol being another with the B4 and Rails Terrier.

Rails and Kernow showing R3723 as in stock, and Rails has new photos. Looks fantastic.

Indeed it does. The only niggle...which really isn’t a niggle....is that it’s far too bright and clean, standing outside Swindon Works fresh from the paint shop .It screams for etched plates and TBG ‘s masterful muck.

Now I wonder how the g###n will turn out.....

Late crest, BR green looks fantastic.

Not really a WR fan (Bachmann 94xx excepted) but I may well have to purchase one of these.

As to my shame I have just acknowledged. Hattons,Rails and others use it too.

If you are up for buying something from one of the biggies, it's worth checking their e-bay listings along with the retail shops as they don't always tally price wise and it might just be a few pounds less on e-bay.

I get the impression that more shop based retailers are taking space on e-bay to catch those punters that still assume "It's on e-bay, so it must be cheap"

Same with Amazon, some of the big sellers (e.g. Gaugemaster)  take space on Amazon Marketplace.

Fingers crossed. The Large Prairie is a GWR/ WR icon. Those of us of a “certain age” have memories of them stuck in a time warp.

Yes

Birmingham Moor Street (or Snow Hill) in the 1950s where most of the suburban trains were 41XX or 51XX (BR black/Maroon coaches)

Reckon so; having noticed that a small ish model shop round my way has 3,700 items listed on ebay. Maybe also they reckon that an ebay 'shop' provides a better cost vs. hassle ratio then buying and maintaining a full on web based 'shop' of their own.

I have a strong impression that eBay is not the best way of indulging oneself in terms of cost benefit at the moment. Far better terms are available at our retail sector. It seems to me that a good many sellers are deluding themselves over the value of what they offer for sale.Or am I missing something here ?

The model railway shops that have been mentioned are only selling at around (within a pound or two) the price they would do for over the counter sales so I don't see what the problem is.

Much selling on e-bay is at normal prices these days*

*EDIT some still view it as a bargain basement store but that's long gone.

Looking forward to seeing them nodding to Brent..

By the way Ian, and completely off topic,  I received the superb book 'The Red Dragon and Other Friends' (title by memory) and it is superb!  Truly great photography and especially fine captions.

On topic, I shall be shopping for one or more large Prairies. I used to think the class a bit boring but built two Kitmaster versions in the 1960s so what can I do by commemorate them?

BR black is especially appealing  given that it resembles the Kitmaster version.

How's that for buyer-fussiness?   :)

I'm meaning retail shops selling on ebay at retail prices as they see it as easier than setting up a full blown 'internet shop' via a website of their own, that's all.

Here is the Rails image, below that the Hornby image, I suspect the Hornby image might be a pre-production.

As mentioned by Miss Prism a few messages back some variation in safety valve heights.

Beautiful all the same.

Indeed, most prices asked on Ebay are insane. In my humble view.  This is replicated with some on-line sellers like Amazon and many others who ask vastly more than many specialist retailer.

Presumably there are many buyers who lack the time or inclination or indeed the need to shop around.

MRP -15%, more later on, similar to their shops. (give or take a few pounds)

I've bought several items from some of the big boys and used e-bay and did so because it was convenient.

My retailer of choice is Derails who aren't on e-bay.

With reference to the two pictures from Rails and Hornby respectively I showed a couple of messages back, it looks to me as if the cylinders on the production model (Rails) are centred over the driving wheel centres,  on the Hornby photo the cylinders were fractionally high...  mentioned some time ago I believe.

A few small other differences show that the production model may actually be better than the pre-prod Hornby photo.

With light weathering we might have a winner here!

Well on that we do agree. Mine too.

But in most cases because of eBay commission on sales, retailers cannot match the lower prices offered by our retailer of choice and many others on new items.IIRC Rails eBay prices on new items.....a while ago now it must be said....were higher than those then currently for sale on their website .Though Hattons occasional forays there...usually with the P Class and Barclays.....did match shop website prices.

ATM,eBay rates on the Prairie are ..or were yesterday.....significantly higher than offered elsewhere. In a few weeks this may no longer apply. Serendipity. What does get shown in stark relief is Bachmann’s tighter control of distribution..Though even there the Class 37g is the exception that proves the eBay rule....Off topic...Let’s enjoy a long awaited model .

Er....things may have changed on that count which drives a coach and horses through points I made earlier. The world moves on and you can assume nothing can you ?

Can anyone suggest some typical train compositions for the 61XX tht Hornby has just released (BR black)? From ready to run stock I take it that would be the likes of Hornby Collets (maroon or red and cream), Backmann non corridor Mk1s in maroon, or Mk1s from either manufacturer?

A four car B set would be ideal I would imagine, but that's not for today.
