Such a wide gulf between Binns Lane Hornby and Richmond/Margate Triang.

Surely one is expensive 'O' gauge and the other is cheap 'OO' gauge so not surprising.

Hmmmmm....

I don't know if I'd want to pay so much for something with the keeping qualities of a Lancia Beta or one of Hornbys Mazak Rot fleet.

This is what it should look like inside!

http://www.tri-ang.co.uk/OONew/chassis462Early.htm

It would be nice to know if it had the XO1 disc commutator motor too, or the slightly later XO3

Indeed I didn't buy it, bought a Hornby 3-rail 8F instead (no, not a 48094, sadly)   :)

How long before Hornby's Princess revelations....?   I am a veritable child of 8yrs about this!

New Princess running on Engine Shed..

Looks like phenomenal detail.

The have assembled the motion with  the vacuum pump on the wrong side, I'm sure this is a simple error.

here is the finely detailed motion with picture reversed by me, which rather makes the lubricators backwards, but you get the idea. Hornby stress that this is far from final!

Apart from that the models look the same as displayed a while ago, but there is video of one running, which is very pleasing. Go for it Hornby!  A beautiful piece of work so far, fit to carry on the traditional place of the Lizzies in railway and model railway history.

Cheers

edit; given that the vacuum pump and associated crosshead lever is 'handed'  I'm not sure if it's very simple to fix!

Still Hornby says it's early days.... :)

Very well spotted, Rob! You’re absolutely right, too – a new moulding would be required.

I'm sure these things happen all the time between design and final production.

Here is a mid-30s possibly about 1936-7 pic and the crosshead lever has gone but the cylinder remains.

This might be close to the intended Hornby spec.

I cannot help but think a version with the 1933-4 flat-side tender as a limited production run would sell massively, being an icon for Hornby down the years, including in 0 gauge.

PLEASE !!!

YES !!!

It'll be cheaper to produce - virtually no linkages!!

Al.

I'm wondering how easy it might be to create a 6202 Turbo with parts from old Duchesses and Princesses?

The boiler in the mid-late 30s was the same as Princessses, and performance was marginally superior to the 'Lizzies'  p25 'The Book of the Princess Royals' Ian Sixsmith.

There was an article not that long ago in Railway Modeller creating the conventional 1952 rebuild as 46202 Princess Anne that used both Princess and Duchess parts. Shouldnt be that much more difficult to create the original loco by the same means.

Any idea what issue?

It was a few years ago, maybe 6 or 8? not sure if it was not in Hornby Mag as well?

The main compromise in the build was the use of Duchess wheels over the smaller Princess ones. Looked good though. I have my own Turbomotive that I built from a Triang Princess about 35 years ago somewhere .....

Found this:

http://www.hornbycentral.co.uk/about/the-making-of-princess-anne

although this is a different build as it uses a modified Princess chassis rather than the stock Duchess/Coronation one that I remember being used in the article.

There has been at least two kits of it. The Keyser kit and a resin one. Dean Sidings I think.

It was indeed Dean Sidings. I have one which has been almost complete for about 10 years, designed to fit the Margate chassis.

I think it is out of production now though. A shame for me because I would also like to model it in a different era.

As it's Dean Sidings then it's now part of Phoenix Paints and you may be in luck as they are reissuing most of the kits after having problems with the castings.

Just out of interest, with regard to the previous tooling 2001-version, was the anniversary model R2426 of 46201 in plain black early BR crest ever a model of an actual livery?  It is quite attractive in my view.

Off the top of my head (scary I know) Lizzie went from 46 Lined Black straight to the trail BR Lined Black (bascially the mixed traffic livery) in 48/49.

I wonder which if any Lizzies and Duchesses were ever in plain wartime black? I know many if not all the 'streamlined' Coronations were thus treated but not so sure about the Lizzies.

Unlined weathered black is about the limit of my painting aspirations. With appropriate brown rust or steamy stains.here and there.
