Hornby - New tooling - Mk3 slide-door coaches

A prototype question ...

Do the GWR HST Mk3s in green livery all have sliding doors presently?

Thanks,

Martin

GWR are in the process of receiving sliding door Mk3s to be formed into 4 coach sets to work from Penzance to Exeter (and I believe eventually Cardiff). They have had one set since last summer, and I think a second has been delivered, but progress has been slow, just like the ScotRail 7 cities sets.

IC Swallow was released this year, cannot see another new tool for the Mk3.

Last year :P

But surprisingly difficult to find now.  And I still can't tell which are the "shorties" on eBay.

I mean, if anyone knows where I can buy a full set of 8 INTERCITY MK3s (not worried about different numbers), I'm interested!

Hornby have announced new tooling for contemporary versions of Mark3 coaches with sliding doors with accompanying power-car sets for each of the three liveries. Numbering options give the potential to build up complete sets with individual numbering

Do i spy MK3a roof vents on a HST trailer ? (the 3D print)

Yep - many of Cross Country's cars are conversions from LHCS and retain the LHCS style roofs - including all 5 x TCCs, and many TF(D)/TS/TS(D) - so if they have noticed that detail and allowed for that in the tooling, then Hornby need a gigantic Well Done from anyone who likes accurate coaching stock models!

I'm slightly flabbergasted that they have decided to do each as a full train, including all the single-operator tooling like the TCC.

Either way, it's a real step-up for modern HST modelling. Excellent!

Here's two shots of TCC 45002 (before door mods) showing the hauled stock roof vents, along with the TF(D) and TS either side. As well as the roof vent and plated large windows unique to the TCC!

The XC fleet also had (pre-door mods) a real mix of treatments to the former toilet/luggage rack area windows (a mix of removed, single clear pane, and original two pane) - does anyone know have these been standardised during the door replacement as presumably the door now has to slide into that space? Does anyone know what happened to the cars where there was seating in that area (see second image)?

Sorry No. 1 - My mistake - 2019!  Sure there must be some around.  Try some of the smaller shops - not sure if last time I went in, that the Signal Box at Anstey still has some.

Sorry No.2 - I have had two rakes, so its probably down to me that there is a shortage (needed a rake for the 1st IC HST they did too!).

On another note, is it possible that Hornby have the L in the wrong place - There are 4 TSL's, but a rake only needs 1, whilst on TS there are only 2 listed, but each rake would need 2, meaning for the 2 rake numbering, there should be 4 listed.....

Regards,

C.

I'm really looking forward for these, just a bit stuck on which one set to have now.

These do look really, really good.  And now for the big question - anyone know what the proper train formations for the GWR, Cross Country and Scotrail rakes, so that people can order the correct number, of the correct vehicles to make their rakes up.

Many Thanks,

C

GWR - TGS, TSD, TS, TS

SR - For a 5 car set 1 of each looking at the image. Unsure which vehicle gets removed for a 4 car rake.

XC - TGS, TSD, TS, TS, TS, TCC, TFD

XC - TGS, TSD, TS, TS, TS, TCC, TFD

From the catalog numbers, it looks like there are more than enough vehicles to do two complete sets - they have announced 18 coaches.

2 x TGS, 4 x TSD, 8 x TS, 2 x TCC, 2 x TFD

Is there any information yet as to the individual coach numbers as I'd like to put together a matching rake and not have to renumber.

A recent-ish list (Nov 2018) shows these formations:

XC01 41193/45001/42375/42369/42051/42380/44021

XC02 41194/45002/42368/42373/42038/42371/44072

XC03 41195/45003/41370/42378/42036/42376/44052

XC04 41026/45004/42234/42037/42367/42366/44012

XC05 41035/45005/42290/42053/42052/42379/44017

Quite a good reference that shows the ex-LHCS Mk3As converted to Mk3 HST use as previously mentioned by Martyn a few posts up - those that are 423xx and 4119x as well as the 45xxx vehicles

Cheers,

Mick

At the moment only XC03 is in service with the mods completed. XC01 is currently in for conversion at the moment (since late last year) so I imagine they are still the correct formations.

Thanks,

Tom

Prior to this announcement were the bogies and wheelsets the same or have Hornby poached these from Oxford given that I spotted these new Hornby Mk3s have disc brake wheel inserts ( I dont recall seeing them before on any Hornby Mk3).

It is quite possible Hornby have simply kept the original Lima bogie but upgraded the wheelsets with the inserts.

Interesting to hear about the Penzance-Exeter-Cardiff short sets coming in soon.

Interesting to hear about the Penzance-Exeter-Cardiff short sets coming in soon.

I may have been a little off in my thinking/memory there, I'm afraid as, at a work meeting yesterday, it was mentioned that the "Castles" as GWR call their short HSTs will work Penzance - Exeter and Taunton - Cardiff so not through out as I said (although some transfer between routes, probably early morning, late at night or ECS is likely, I'd have thought, if only for maintenance purposes).

One can hope that Cross Country will provide a nicely timed HST to link the GWR workings :)

Some daytime Cardiff's already start back from Exeter, so at least a couple of daylight in-service diagrams capable of cycling the sets back to their maintenance base at Laira seem like a plausible outcome when there are more sets in use.

Just going back and answering by own question, in case it helps anyone else, after digging through some images of them - looks like all the variations of small windows get removed en-masse when the new doors are fitted on the Cross Country ones - unfortunately (from a passenger point of view - though it makes it much easier from a modelling view!) it looks like that creates a seating bay with no window where seats had been situated in that area.

Hi everyone,

Apologies in advance if this is the wrong thread to ask this question. (I'm a newbie)

Regarding the new Old Oak Common liveried HST pack, I noticed that this doesn't contain the most up-to-date version of the OAC power car. They added another badge/crest to the side of it when Old Oak closed a few weeks back.

Just for comparison:

Current:

New model:

So my question is, would this be added to the final version or not likely? I posted here as I don't think this power car has actually run with the sliding MK3 coaches yet? (Correct me if I'm wrong) So surely this would be kind of inaccurate to have this power car running with sliding MK3s unless that crest is added.

I'd suggest letting them know, if the production hasn't started they may yet be able to update the artwork for it.

Someone needs to let Hornby know that the GWR and Scot Rail coaches don't have LSL bogies!

Ok....I'll do it..

I can't speak for the sliding door conversions, but a number of GWR trailers do have LSL bogies. I have yet to consciously feel the difference, but on occasions do note LSL on the end of the coach.

When I walked up and down Penzance station showing the difference to one of my sons, the split seemed to be about 50/50. Whether the retained coaches are mixed I don’t know.

Also looks like the coach ends have seen a major improvement over the older designs now with an inset corridor connection diaphragm like we saw on the old Jouef Mk3a models and more recently on the Oxfords.

On the old Lima Mk3s the ends were fairly flat with the gangway simply moulded straight onto it not being inset into the vestibule.  Looks much better.
