Typical I should choose the set that turns up last! Reading your review makes me look forward to them even more! Having said that if I had gone for 2nd choice (XC) I'd then be waiting on power cars

I've lost count of the number of times it's been said that Hornby and Oxford Rail have not shared anything in terms of the Mk3 coaches. I think Paul Isles himself will go mad with repeating himself over and over again.

I appreciate that, but Paul answered the question himself six hours before you, without feeling the need to add the head banging emoji.

Let's hope they revisit and update the original MkIII model now...

I thought Simon was quoted as saying as the current MK3 model sold okay, they wouldn't bother doing anything to it?

Will be interesting to see what the INTERCITY coaches are like when they arrive later this year.  Original spec (with NEM pockets) or semi-new tooling.

Question then is whether they'll release other liveries.
I just wish it would be "done" and then I can buy.  For example the Class 68 - I don't think it'll ever be improved upon so I'm happy to buy.  The new tooling HST - pretty good, can't see them re-doing it again in my lifetime - happy to buy.

Do they have spare power cars? I know for certain that 43155 is still in use with GWR however it doesn't appear on these lists.

Jack

Currently there are only seven diagrams so they have spare sets.

This may increase when life gets back to normal.

These are the sets out today..

Probably because its the only one available! Which is an inherent problem with the market really. There aren't many models that would support competing models of the same class in the same gauge, at least with modern image. The 66 is the obvious one, the 37 and 55 are on the way from Accurascale to compete with Bachmann. Hornby's 90, 92 37, 66 55 don't really compete (or should I say target a different market) with the Bachmann and Accurascale alternatives IMO. But then as there isn't fear of competition the tooling becomes a cash cow, as its "good enough" for people to buy without alternative but would get obliterated if somebody else tooled it to modern standards.

The HST though is one of the few things where I think a competition could be viable though. They are very prolific region wise, 40 years of coverage time wise and I would expect that most people who run passenger trains based on the last 40 years has one.

Patiently waiting for my GWR set to arrive! Noting in your photos the SD appears to be shorter than the standard mk3. Seeing as Hornby's 8 window Mk3 is prototypical at 30.1cm in length, now bit worried about the new SD! Could you measure please, fingers crossed its a trick of the camera!

Only same about these coaches, is we have yet to get an ultimate Mk3 with DCC CDL which shall be epic on Bachmann's Mk2Fs if they ever release in modern liveries...

Presumably if you use Roco rather than the Hornby longer roco-like couplers the gangway connectors actually touch (or close to it). The only thing to Hornby couplers are good for is the original Bachmann Mk1s where the NEM pocket is too far back.

The coaches really look fantastic.

If the originals were retolled to that standard, and Power Cars fitted with close coupling mechanism, I'd buy one...!

The other pic in the same post appears to be OK......

It certainly doesn't show the variance that seems to be there in the lower pic

Its a trick of the camera. Hornby didn't decide to produce a new Mk3 and then decide to make it a scale six feet too short.

Unless Bachmann have been doing the same with their 158s:20200429_182434_HDR.jpg.be5bf896cdfa5cd333f0ad8a45440962.jpg

If they don't bring a modern tooled version of the Mk3 to market, someone else will.

Thus it is in Hornby's interest to do it, though it is also in their interest to dismiss the idea (to keep sales of the existing models happening) until they are ready to do it.

I'd be very surprised if the tooling(s) which allow the current level of adaptability to produce so many variants of the sliding door MK3s wouldn't have the provision to cover the slam door ones in the future - that would just be prudent.  As it stands, the sliding door variants don't cannibalise their existing MK3 market but fill a very current gap those MK3s didn't cover.

Hi

Sorry for delay. Yes, looks shorter, but there the same length, just the angle the phone was held...

Fantastic coaches and you won't be disappointed...

Pleased to say my TFD has arrived from Hattons. The TS x3 and TSD are due tomorrow.

Beautiful work on the model - a vast improvement on the previous Hornby Mk3s. Pleased to also see the roof colour matches the first release HST powercars too. The bodyside colours differ very slightly, but not that noticeable (to me anyway). I'll be attempting to remove the valence on the PCs as the prototype got the mods by the time the Mk3SDs came in.

Bravo Hornby.

Note these one have a specific design by the looks of it. Not sure these come with the ones for the loco though?

Hmm yes, the description isn't specific enough on the website.  Drop the guys an email or message.  They do two specific types for the two types of HST trailer, but this does now make a 3rd?   The other two types DO include couplings for the power cars.  Best to ask before ordering.

I emailed them this afternoon and they said they'll offering them as sets for the SD's with the Power car couplings by Sunday.

I'll keep an eye on the website then, ready for when the ScotRail ones turn up. Although says R3 and above, I'm sure all of my loops on the station have R2 somewhere.

I wonder if at some point in the (relative near) future, the MK3 will be re-done with on-board lighting, doors that can open with a function button and maybe even speakers that would give that wailing upon entering / exiting a station.

Clearly costing £150 each...
