RMweb Premium DLT Posted January 23, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 23, 2019 The lane will be wet & muddy, with puddles and pot holes, Modern Image then... A bit of a light-bulb moment yesterday - I can save both width on the track and the length of the crossing gates by using NG track... Obvious, really, especially as I have been looking at the Ffestiniog crossing at Penrhyndeudraeth as a possible scene. Slippery slope Stu, no going back...
Stu70
Stu this looks like a good cakebox challenge you are building. I liked your cakebox from 2018 called The End. I will watch this challenge progress.
RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted January 28, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 28, 2019 (edited) Ok, here we go... I've cut a piece of 5mm foamboard to a 7 1/2 inch square shape. This gives a little bit of leeway when adding the final vertical back/side scenes. I then cut and glued a 'T' piece to form the road and track bed. The resulting off-cut for the right hand side was then trimmed at an angle, to form the gulley, and a further trapezoidal cross-sectioned strip added to form the grass verge. The fence marks the boundary of the railway and the footpath to the off-scene station. The next process will be to add a sloped card base to the left side, for the rough, off road area by the signal box, and form the basic shape of the Cornish hedge. Then the whole lot need a base coat of greys, browns & greens. The crossing itself and the gates will be made from strip wood, the fence will be a mixture of the spearpoint (on the right) and post and wire (on the left). The post & wire fence is so the little lad train spotting can climb up. Edited January 28, 2019 by Stubby47
RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted February 11, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 11, 2019 (edited) You've probably not noticed the lack of progress on this. I made a mistake when setting the levels on the first version. The track bed would have been far too high, with an un-prototypical hump in the road (yes I know there are some, but not what I was after). So I've started again. It's still the same plan, but this time the grass verge is on the side module and the track bed is not on top of the cork. I've also started the Cornish Hedge, which will be built in a similar fashion to the wall on Ladmanlow - pieces of plasticard, trimmed, rounded and then placed into position individually. You can see the ground drops away to the left of the road, this will be a gravel / dirt area. The gulley to the right will be a ditch of water, with overgrowth covering the hedge. Our hero (Mk3) will have his coat reshaped so he can actually stand next to the car. Edited February 11, 2019 by Stubby47 11

GeoffinOz
Looking good Stubby47. The change will be more realistic, with the track below the road level, and I like the idea of the changing timeline. I look forward to reading your 200 words, if they are as funny as some of your comments.
RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted February 14, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 14, 2019 I've added the stones to the front of the Cornish Hedge, they need priming then painting, then earth and grasses added, before becoming heavily overgrown. I've also mocked up the front of the garage, to gauge sizes and composition. The garage floor will be slightly above the road, so a concrete slope will be needed. You can see the two modules here for comparison.
RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted February 14, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 14, 2019 I've added a bit of paint to the hedge. 6
RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted February 14, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 14, 2019 That's looking good, I really like the variations in colour on the stones. Al.
RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted February 17, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 17, 2019 Track cut to length, but the number of sleepers needs reducing to give more of a NG look.
RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted February 17, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 17, 2019 Spaced, glued and painted ( with some odd brown called Track Colour -H173).

RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted February 19, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 19, 2019 Railings have been primed, will hopefully get a chance to measure and drill holes today.
RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted February 19, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 19, 2019 Have decided to wait until the ballast and ground cover is laid before drilling the holes and fitting the fence. Comparison photos of the station path.
RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted February 20, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 20, 2019 (edited) Shoulders for the ballast and the station footpath paving have been added. I will be getting the sander out soon, to smooth off and reduce the wooden planks. The ones in the middle might get lifted and a piece of card packing added underneath, as they are a tad low. RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted February 20, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 20, 2019 I tried using some Scenic Cement as ballast glue, but it came out with a very strong surface tension, meaning it pulled the carefully placed stones all over the place. I'll let it dry, then add some ground cover and grass stems to cover the gaps.
RMweb Gold Sweet pea Posted February 20, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 20, 2019 It’s awful when the stones get moved about. I still like the old tried and tested way of 50/50 mix with a drop of liquid. Takes that bit longer to dry.
RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted February 20, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 20, 2019 I was being lazy, just grabbed the bottle to see how it would work. I've used Klear before, but not with any great success. 1

RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted February 21, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 21, 2019 That's unlucky mate, hope you get it sorted. The rest of it is coming on really well. Al.
RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted February 25, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 25, 2019 (edited) Ballast. Again. And some ground cover. Much happier this time. The planking has been smoothed off as well , so now needs several years of weathering and use adding. Edited February 25, 2019 by Stubby47
RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted February 25, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 25, 2019 Gates. As this is a level crossing, I thought some gates might be a good idea. I need to add the rest of the ironwork, including diagonal wires/rods (and straighten the lower bracket !) and a second gatepost & latch. And a 2nd gate.
RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted February 25, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 25, 2019 You're just showing off now, using real wood for the gates... Looks good. Al.
