Popular Post P.C.M
Hi Guys, I am really enjoying this thread and the class 26 27 thread. Some great pics. I didn't get to see that many class 25s living on the Southern so when I did it was a real treat. Here are a couple of mine from back in the day. A couple at Bescot and some old Instamatic shots one taken at Westbury. Cheers Peter.

Interesting mix of stuff behind that first one at Bescot: OHL maintenance coach, then an air-braked twin-unit car carrier, HTV hopper, ?MDV and an engineers' Sturgeon I think... RMweb Gold SHMD Posted February 17, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 17, 2019 That could be me on the end of platform 12 in the Manchester Victoria shot! It probably isn't though. It was a favourite hang out for many a spotter/basher. Kev. 1

The Border Reiver
Brand new D5224 stands in the yard at Darlington Works on 21st July 1963, officially introduced to traffic on 19th July. It later became Class 25 25074. It was withdrawn on 7th September 1980 then scrapped at Swindon Works in May 1982. 11

Rugd1022
Just rummaging through the hardrive for something else and came across this Fred Castor photo - D7671 in the old South Yard at Crewe with the Salop line veering off in the background, a fair sized forest grew up here when the sidings fell out of use but have only recently been cut down.... the official walking route down to Basford Hall goes along here and it all looks very strange now that the trees have gone... 60021 Pen-y-Ghent
Hi! I've just been sorting through some old negatives and come across this which I thought was worth showing. I'm not sure where it is but possibly Northallerton - I'm sure someone will know! Apologies for the poor quality - it was taken on my old Box Brownie in 1963 or 1964.

This got me thinking about the length of some locos’ working lives, or the brevity of them in lots of cases, this being one of them. Can it ever be ascertained whether a loco has earned back its cost to build/purchase? I suppose many never did, whether that be a whole Class - Clayton, Class 29, Baby Deltic - or individual class members withdrawn early like the above loco. I suppose anything that has worked less that 18-20 years cold have been counted as a negative in the cost factor..... If that was the case then the Baby Deltic would have be seen as a failure although I do like them ..... and the Class 76 as a success...
