I grew up in Manchester and it was 24, 25 and 40's that ruled the North West at the time. A regular run out was to Northenden/Skelton Junction area where the ICI hoppers were still in use.

I can just about smell the diesel fumes in that last pic :)

My dad used to take me here too, on the site of the old station when it was less overgrown you could park up and watch the trains go by.

Must be where I got my thing for the old MGR workings.

Similarly you used to be able to park up by the underbridge on Kirkmanshulme Lane in Longsight and watch the goings on at Longsight.

Bit about Northenden at disused-railways:

Growing up in the Thames Valley I didn't normally get to see many class 25s but here is one snapped on a day out. I know some people on here like a "where is this?" challenge so where was this picture of 25213 taken?

The other distinctive thing about 235 is the position of the blue star MU symbols, most 25's had them under the marker lights. Good one to model, I might just renumber mine, even though I never actually had it on BR.

25058 runs into Exeter St Davids at the head of the 18.05 departure from Barnstaple. This was one of two booked loco hauled services over that route at the time. This loco was one of the last of the class to be allocated to Laira, and in October 1980 it transferred away to Bescot. 19/7/80

A great shot, and look at that formation! Mk1 SO or SK, Mk2 SO, Mk1 BSK and a parcels van, a modeller's dream.....

Thank you for that info. I might model it too, I have a thing about BR blue locos with red bufferbeams! As well as the location of the MU stars another thing to note is the catches/hinges on the bodyside grilles. Modellers beware!

If you want to play the "where is this" game, here's one of mine for you all to guess at.

Up end of the loop at Lostwithiel...? 25 080 was a Laira machine for a while ;)

I was thinking along the same lines as Nidge (Laira-based loco, somewhere in the south west perhaps) but Lostwithiel is in a bit of a valley so there wouldn’t be the view of open countryside beyond. Given the bumpy nature of the landscape in that part of the world. I would be surprised if it is somewhere in Devon or Cornwall.

D5188 @ Mickleover early 1964 (I think) - as far as I know the only diesel to have visited the line before closure.

Sorry for the slow response, I only just found this. Pairs of class 20s and class 31s were used on trains to Stanton Ironworks east of Derby until 1968 when the line closed. The very last train was a DMU special from Burton (?) that covered the GN lines around Derby and Nottingham on 4th May 1968.

( I think) - I never saw any diesels until closure between Friargate and Egginton - I lived not far from the line - within earshot - so never heard any. That said I did have to go to school...

There was a weekend when the B6 Crewe DMU was diverted into Friargate - very early 60s.

Tricks of the trade #437 : remember where it was the day before, unless it's been took in the night it should still be there.... :biggrin_mini2:
