We have, thankfully, reached the era of the accurate, reliable rendition of prototypical railway models.

 

All manufactures in this day and age can utilise a plethora of resources to ensure the finished product will satisfy that most critical of customer - us.

Within a given price range, we can expect fine, exquisite details but, regardless of cost we demand consistent, reliable running every time.

I have faith that the Rails and Hornby versions of Mr Stroudley's design will deliver and operate reliably and with visual harmony.

 

When the dust has finally settled and the boxes have been stored away, it will be left to the models themselves to prove their worth.

Nice to see them in physical form.

 

I guess these are decorated samples, so not exactly as will be produced, but giving a very good impression.  Note that Stepney sample  has, for instance been assembled using a cab from a later version, as the hole in the front sheet  for the vacuum exhaust pipe may be seen.

 

I note two improvements on the previous images: (i) the SR green version now has the livery applied to the splasher, and (ii) wheels seem to be blackened, which is a great improvement.

 

Otherwise I think the both the strengths and weaknesses noted earlier remain.  The major issue for the A1X being the tank bolts and for the A1 the buffer lamp brackets, chimney and lubricators.  The guard irons are still hideous and the coal rails on Rolvenden still wrong.

 

A good solid effort, though.  A good Terrier, but perhaps not a great one, and certainly not definitive.  Room yet for Rails/Dapol to surprise us.

Some as early as March for some if the Hornby website is to be believed, suggests work was started along time before the Rails version (although difficult to understand why it seemed to be a late addition to this year's range if they were so advanced). However even if the March ones turn out to be a mistake, May isn't a long way off!

Overall they look far better than the old tooling, but, those nuts on the coupling rods really do look absurd, something I hope would not happen on the Rails version.

One question I have is this: How heavy are they? The old version is no-where near heavy enough for reliable pick-up, and unless this has been addressed I feel that these will still suffer from less than perfect running. And of course as they are so small there is very little space to get any extra ballast into them....

I see it as a very positive attitude. 

They are back to a belief at the top that Hornby should be the number one name in model trains.

They are adopting an aggressive attitude to clearly let any competitors know that they mean business.

The other side of the coin is that having taken this stance then they have to see it through.

I think it is called Capitalism and I think it is the system by which we do business in the UK.

Interesting times ahead.

Reading too much into that I suspect.  Could it be it makes sense to produce the BR Black ones first  and then proceed to the more complicated liveries ?  In any case its Chinese New Year coming up . If they are not on a boat now I suspect that March will not be met .

Generally one might expect to sell as many BR black versions as all others combined. That in itself is a reason for going with these first, so perhaps that decision isn't directly related to the intention to spike a retail commissioner's guns.

So I stand by the rather sour taste in the mouth this announcement leaves. How do we know Rails didn't ambush Hornby in the first place (maybe taking advantage of their apparently weak financial position and obvious supply problems)? To have their model this advanced already implies Hornby have been working on the Terrier for a considerable time before its announcement .

I think the smiling Mr Kohler speaking of surprises gives you the answer to that, besides Rails announced this near the start of their process, Hornby near the end of theirs. Retailers need a constant supply of new product.  For various reasons, both Red Box and Blue Box have struggled to keep up.  Retailers need to fill the void so you can hardly blame them for turning to commissions.  To hit back with a duplicate product is not, in my view,the best response by Hornby, but, hey, believe what you want. 

 

I was disappointed to see these tactics, but, point made, I think the focus should return to the model.

Whether or not there has been some inter rivalry shenanigans, the old Hornby Terrier could possibly have given the manufacturer a head start with the new tooling, hence the lower price.

 

Southern modellers in recent years have been quite fortunate in the small engine area. Perhaps Hornby might have considered a completely new venture, maybe a D tank, C2X or a K mogul (but the latter would possibly be a logical step forward for Bachmann following on from their Atlantics.)

 

Whatever, duplicated models can appear to be a somewhat lost opportunity for sales and a little frustrating for modellers eager to see what new projects are on the horizon.
