How dangerous is NGRM-online?!

It could just be they use an older version of HTTP and not one which is HTTPS compliant.

Because it doesnt have the S on the end (for secure) some security systems have a bit of a fit warning you the World will end etc although they are normally secure in other ways.

Thats about all I know about this stuff.

Seems to be no problem accessing ngrm-online using

https://ngrm-online.com/forums/index.php

Rather than

http://ngrm-online.com/forums/index.php

However using either of these my tablet gives a connection not secure warning, but then it does the same for RMweb whether using

http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/

or

https://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/

Or did you sign up in it some time ago in the past and have forgotten you did so - much more likely than someone cloning your email address for a minority (but extremely important :)) interest web site ;)

Thank you for all the nice things you’ve been saying about NGRM Online. It started because I wanted to say thank you to all my customers and was originally a pair of Yahoo groups about 20 years ago. After a similar question some time ago we took it up with our hosting service and received a reassurance that we were perfectly safe. Don’t ask me what they said because I didn't understand it.

Prompted by this thread, and enjoying a dangerous life(!), I signed up to NGRM a couple of days ago.

However, I cannot log in from my mobile, each time I try it tells me I'm using the wrong password (I'm not!) and I end up doing a recover account, which works for that occasion only.

Perhaps this is a connected issue?

Cheers,

Mark

I use my mobile all the time for NGRM - and using it now to answer you here :)

Absolutely no issues with logging on which suggests it is something you are doing, or your phone :(

At various times during the week I will access NGRM using my phone and my PC

Most browsers are starting to flag up the warning for http sites. But unless you are using the site to do money transactions I wouldn't worry about the warning. I still get it on odd occasions with RM Web! Eventually all sites will convert to https and then all will be Ok until some computer twerp decides that even more security is required. Well it does keep them in a job I suppose!

  • 1 year later...

Signed in this morning without problem using a stored shortcut. Tried again this evening (22:20) and got 'Dangerous site' security warnings.

Knowing  what I was going into, I continued and it immediately opened to the site of an artist (Anne Christie , nothing to do with railways, although the address still pointed to the NGRM site correctly. Tried again directly from google search with same results.

Summit wrong I think.

Arternoon all-I've recently tried to sign on to NGRM online as one does and have been firmly warned off by my McAfee web security man as being an risky move.

Can you trust McAfee?

FWIW, NGRM is perfectly safe, but you will get security warnings in some threads where people are using images hosted on non secure servers. This will cause you to have mixed content warnings, although there is no threat from an unsecured image. Unlike RMWeb, it is not possible to upload decent size images direct to threads, so people put them anywhere and everywhere in order to link to them.

I've tried to register for the NGRM site but keep getting told I've failed the security test. I know I've put in the right answer!

Does the site actually still exist?

Yes, I am a member & signed in.

They have updated the forum software yesterday (to this same version as RMWeb uses), so there may still be some glitches to iron out. I will ask the question about new members & post a reply on here, when I get it.
