RMweb Premium Hilux5972 Posted January 17, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 17, 2019 Hi all Just wondered whether my ZTC 511 screen should light up? It was purchased 2nd hand so I will need to send away if it supposed to light up. Cheers

Gordon A
The early screens were not backlit. Gordon A
RMweb Premium Hilux5972 Posted January 17, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 17, 2019 Ok thanks Allan. I may have an early one then Gordon. I’ll get in touch with Taunton Controls and see what they can do for me.
AllanD
The early ones had a contrast control next to the screen
RMweb Premium Hilux5972 Posted January 18, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 18, 2019 The early ones had a contrast control next to the screen Ok I must have a later one then as there’s no button I can see for that. Will await Tauntons reply. Thanks
RMweb Premium Hilux5972 Posted January 18, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 18, 2019 Ok so the reply I got was as follows “When the 511 were made some of the screens were lit and some were not. It was luck of the draw which you got” Bit of a bummer really.
AllanD
Sounds like a typical reply from them.
RMweb Premium Hilux5972 Posted January 19, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 19, 2019 Sounds like a typical reply from them. I think I’ll keep an eye out on eBay for another one and have this one as a backup controller
WIMorrison
Could the “luck of the draw” mean you end up with another one exactly the same as you have now though?
RMweb Gold Colin_McLeod Posted January 19, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 19, 2019 Sounds like a typical reply from them. In fairness to the current management, they were referring to "luck of the draw" when buying an early model from their predecessors.
RMweb Premium njee20 Posted January 19, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 19, 2019 The problem being they’re still trading using that name. It’s a fine line. Mine is backlit FWIW.
RMweb Gold Colin_McLeod Posted January 19, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 19, 2019 They are trading under the name "Taunton Controls" The product is ZTC 511 A bit like Hornby answering a query about a Lima locomotive from the 1980s that you purchased second hand. If you told them it was noisy. Not really their fault that you have problems with a second hand item from an earlier age. It's no reflection on their selling of the updated version. GoingUnderground
In fairness to the current management, they were referring to "luck of the draw" when buying an early model from their predecessors. But the old ZTC never made the 511, their models were the 505 and 510. It was Taunton who introduced the 511. So a secondhand 511 might be a new Taunton build, or it might be a Taunton upgraded ZTC 505 or 510, which may well have retained the screen from the original 505 or 510. I can't remember if my 505 had an illuminated screen, but that was about 10 years ago. Edited January 20, 2019 by GoingUnderground
RMweb Gold traction Posted January 20, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 20, 2019 (edited) I think thats incorrect. ZTC did the 505 and 511, before TC took over. Taunton Controls launched the new improved 611 They are now working on the "TC 612 Ambassador" Cheers Ian Edited January 20, 2019 by traction

lennie
I would suggest when searching for a Backlit Screen on ebay make sure you ask the seller IS THE SCREEN BACKLIT. Beware of those sellers who have no idea of what there selling, or selling on behalf of someone else who is 6ft under. Always best to phone Graham with help and assistance.
