Chiltern’s blue/grey Mk3 set

Hi all,

When did Chiltern operate it’s blue/grey Mk3 set from/to? Did it always stop at Banbury or did it ever go on to Birmingham?

What was a typical blue/grey rake? I’ve read it’s 3x TSOs and 2x FOs. Does that mean no buffet service? What was the RFM W&S coach that Hornby released? Was that fictional?

Thanks

The set continues in traffic just repainted white & silver spots.

The FOs are actually fitted out as SOs but haven’t been renumbered.

Not sure on current formation buts it’s at least 6 MK3, possibly 7 plus DVT. The silver plug door sets are 5 TSO, 1 buffet and a DVT.

Booked diagrams are to / from Banbury but it has done others occasionally

These are from W&S days, and the brandings did differ.

I remember it running to snow hill when there was disruption on the wcml caused by a class 90 detailing light engine at Bletchley back in 2013ish?

Someone had the sense to press it into action instead of a unit on a couple of diagrams as it normally used to park up in banbury between its rush hour runs, pretty sure it also ran as an extra ‘relief’ train too, I seem to recall I was doing Leamington shuttles that day sonnever got a play!

That derailment bought a lot of passengers over from new st/virgin to moor st who had never heard of chiltern or indeed knew that moor st station existed in the shadow of its bigger cousin in brum

Thanks for your replies guys. I’m most interested in services from 2014 to 2016 as that’s when I used to travel between B’ham and the Midlands on a regular basis. Good to know the set occasionally ventured toward b’ham.

So in this period was the RFM not used then? And was there no first class service anymore? Interesting to see a Mk3b FO in the consist in the photos from @Davexoc.

Thanks again

There has never been 1st class on Chiltern. There is a business zone in the RFM. None of the FOs are fitted out as first class. Chiltern is a strictly one class railway.

The slam door set is currently 7 MK3 opens (some are ex-FO and some ex-SO) plus DVT

Never? The MUs still carry yellow banding to indicate?

Anyway, how about this set from 2011?

Chiltern blue/white DVT, 4 x Mk3 blue/grey, 2 x Mk3 Virgin and W&S 67 shoving it along....

Thanks! So have they all been renunbered to SOs then? And are all carriages 2+2 seating?

I’ve not seen a single photo of the blue grey set with Chiltern with the RFM in the rake - just 6 ordinary TSOs.

Chilterns DMU fleet do not have a yellow stripe bodyside and do not have any first class compartments or 2+1 posh seating. One set of doors has a faded yellow top to indicate disabled seating area to station staff.

I’ve lived and used the line for over 10 years and that has been the default throughout. Chiltern do not offer first class.

The only exception to the one class for all rule is the ‘business class’ area in the RFM of the plug door sets.

I’m sat on a 5 car Chiltern 165 set as I type this.

Taken at banbury in 2011 of the ' Banbury' set. Despite the 1 on the door there hasn't been any designated first class on these when ever I have travelled on them.

The business class with  first class style seats used to be worth the £25 upgrade  on our occassional trips on a Friday night to Birmingham when they served hot drinks but its not really worth the extra fare now as all you get is box of snacks and a cold drink

So did Chiltern ditch first class immediately?

Because 165s were definitely built with first class.

I travelled on this set in October last year on the 1721 Marylebone-Bicester North, in coach 11029 which (sadly !) had standard class seating, as mentioned above. It does seem strange that the ex-FO vehicles have not been renumbered into the 12xxx series, especially considering the amount of other Mark 3 stock, both loco-hauled and HST, which has been renumbered.

That’s incredibly helpful, thank you. What do the letters and numbers in the brackets signify though please?

You're very welcome :)

The numbers in brackets are seating capacities. The first numbers are actual seats First Class/Standard Class, T is toilet, TD - disabled toilet, W - wheelchair space. For example, 11029 (-/68 2T 2W) this means - 68 Standard Class seats, 2 Toilets, 2 Wheelchair spaces.

From abrail, a website which carries fairly regularly updated lists of Loco-Hauled Coaching Stock formations including those of IC125 and 225 sets among other items of interest.

Hi! Just checked the web site and found it only has current formations as of the end of 2018. Is there a historical lookup, as W&S has now demised!!

There appears to be no AL06 and the coaches are now part of AL05.
